Chapter 14 #2
“I don’t know. I feel weird. What did she do?” Kira whispers.
“She said she made you stronger. What do you mean by weird, exactly?” I ask.
“Like my skin is stretched tight and my gums hurt.” Kira rubs her arms to rid them of the goosebumps.
“What?” Greyson asks, stepping forward. “You said you don’t have an animal.”
“What do you mean, an animal?” I gasp. “Her mother is a shifter. Are you saying Aggie gave her a wolf?”
“I have helped countless pups shift for the first time and I’m telling you what she just said makes me think Aggie did more than simply make her stronger.” Greyson leans down, his gaze locked on Kira’s.
“I have a wolf?” Kira whispers. “How could she give me a wolf?”
“She’s one of the fates. She gave you a gift, Kira. You’re no longer wolfless.” Greyson pats her shoulder.
“Only so I can save everyone. Where were the fates with their gift when I was an outcast in my pack?” Kira grumbles. “Now I’m expected to save them?”
“If you had been born just like all the other shifters with your wolf, would you have come to the academy?” I ask with a raised brow.
“Probably not. I get what you’re saying.” Kira slumps.
“The fates needed you to help us bridge the gap between demigods and shifters. Yes, Raven and Greyson brought us together with several packs, but you alone are from both worlds. Demigods are a lot cooler than your old pack though. They are a bunch of assholes.”
“Yeah, they will all change their tune when I go back and I’m no longer weak in their eyes.”
“Don’t let it change. You’re a badass without a wolf and I for one can’t wait to see the chaos you bring when you do finally shift.”
“It’s not going to be long. I can sense the wolf trying to break free,” Greyson says. “I think she’s going to be unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.”
“What do you mean? I’m going to be an even bigger freak?”
“Hey, I’m the biggest freak of them all. I would happy if you joined me at the top if it means you have enough power to handle what comes after the war.” I grin.
“Okay, don’t freak out,” Greyson says and immediately Kira’s hands start shaking.
“Babe,” Raven shoves him. “That’s the last thing you tell someone when you don’t want them to freak out. Now, just spit it out.”
“When I leaned down and stared in your eyes, I think she surfaced for a second. The thing that makes me think you’re going to be special is that flames flared in your eyes.” Greyson grimaces and steps back.
“Flames?” Raven bounces on her toes. “That’s so cool. It combined your fire god heritage with your wolf heritage to give you like a fire wolf? Super badass. I can’t wait to meet her.”
“That’s a lot of crazy to digest right now.” Kira turns away.
She’s shaking as Draven wraps his arms around her. My stomach decides that moment is the perfect time to be an asshole and growl loudly. Asshole.
“Okay, we need to eat and get back on the road.” Raven steers me to the back passenger seat.
As I get in the car, Raven plops a whole grocery bag on my lap and glares at me. “You need to eat all that. It’s a long drive and hopefully this will give you enough sustenance to regain your magic.”
“Yes, mother,” I snark at her.
“Knock it off, asshole, and eat. If something happens because you didn’t recharge, Jayden is going to throw me in the pit.” She sticks her tongue out at me.
We all eat in silence as Greyson drives. Gas station food isn’t the best, but my magic slowly returns the more I eat. My shoulders relax and the last of the pain fades away as my healing kicks back in.
“I just don’t understand what Kelsey’s part in all of this is,” Kira mumbles behind me. “She’s just a wolf, not even particularly strong wolf. How can she be a part of this war that’s coming?”
“I don’t know, but I’m sure you will find out soon.
” I turn, offering her a reassuring smile.
“The fates are rarely wrong when they decide to impart wisdom which is why I dread seeing them even though I don’t show it.
Usually, the cryptic warnings are directed at me.
I don’t know how I feel about them being directed elsewhere. ”
“That’s not something to be jealous over, B.” Raven chuckles.
“I’m not jealous. I’m worried. I don’t like this because I don’t want you to feel the way I did when they put this on my shoulders.” I sigh.
“She has three mates to help carry the burden,” Draven says, squeezing her hand.
“That may be, but I know better than anyone that the fates use those you love in a way that makes that weight heavier, not lighter. They will test you and I promise, I’m not trying to scare you. I’m just warning you the life of a hero is hard.”
“I didn’t ask for this,” Kira whispers.
“Neither did I, but can you leave saving the world to someone who wasn’t chosen by the fates themselves?
Can you force the shifters to live in the dark?
” I ask. “They aren’t joking about the dangers the supernaturals are facing if you don’t step up.
I wish I could step up for you, but I can’t because I’m not a part of that world. You are the only one who can do that.”
If she doesn’t listen, it may not matter what happens in the coming days because the humans will kill us all.
