SADIE

As I stood there, fear and panic gripped my heart. I could feel the tremors running through my body as Charlene, my dear friend and confidant, held the gun at me, tears streaming down her face. It was a nightmare come to life, and I couldn’t fathom how we had ended up in this horrifying situation.

Brian had found a way to control Charlene through that mysterious, malevolent ring of his, which completely disproved my theory that it was just wolves who could be affected by it. Charlene definitely wasn’t a shifter, yet here she was, doing Brian’s bidding. And I knew she was under Brian’s control because there was no way she would point a gun at me otherwise, but also because her eyes were as black as his.

His power over her was chilling, and it had brought her to the point of taking us all hostage. I couldn’t understand why she was doing this, but I knew I had to remain calm for Gregory and the other children. I was the only person who could keep them alive anymore.

My mind raced with thoughts of James and my desperate need to reach out to him. But with Charlene brandishing a weapon, making any sudden moves could prove disastrous. I had to choose my words carefully and try to defuse the situation.

“Charlene, please, you don’t have to do this,” I pleaded, my voice shaking with worry. “Think about the children. We can find a way to sort this out, but we need to put the gun down. It’s not too late to make things right. This isn’t you, and you know it.”

She looked torn, as if her inner struggle was battling against the influence of that accursed ring. The children huddled together behind me, their faces filled with fear, while I did my best to project an image of strength and hope, though my heart was pounding.

But Charlene hesitated, torn between her loyalty to me and the compulsion from the ring. All I could do was pray that her love for the children would ultimately prevail and Brian’s sinister hold over her would weaken. I didn’t know what I could do to break through Brian’s control, but I would do it somehow.

I should have known when I woke up in the morning and James wasn’t there that this wasn’t going to be a great day.

If only I could call him, I thought sadly to myself. But Charlene knew that my phone was locked away in the staff cupboard, so there was nothing I could do. I could only hope he sensed something would happen and he would swoop in to save the day again. He had been my hero before, and I needed him to be again.

“He’s coming,” Charlene whispered, her eyes widening. She still had the gun in my face, but she was still warning me that Brian was coming here. This wasn’t good. How the hell were we going to get away from him? “I can’t let you go.”

Angry and frustrated tears pricked in my eyes. This was a hopeless situation already, and it was about to get worse. My heart raced, and my instincts urged me to protect the children in my care. The room seemed to close in around me as Brian swaggered through the door, his smug expression sending shivers down my spine. His presence was an ominous cloud that cast a pall over the room.

“Well, well, well, Sadie. Here we are again,” Brian taunted, his voice dripping with arrogance.

I tried to keep a brave face, even though the unease of his presence was palpable. The children huddled behind me closely, their innocent eyes filled with curiosity and fear. I knew I had to keep them safe, and the weight of that responsibility rested heavily on my shoulders.

“Brian, this has to stop,” I said firmly, my voice quivering only slightly. “You can’t keep doing this. It’s wrong, and it’s hurting everyone.”

Brian’s laughter echoed through the room, a chilling sound that sent a shiver down my spine. He seemed undeterred by my plea, his arrogance as prevalent as ever.

“Sadie, you’ve always had a way of underestimating me,” he retorted. “But things are different now. I have power, and you can’t stop me.”

I stood my ground, a mixture of anger and fear churning inside me as Brian advanced with his smug determination. The children were huddled behind me, their wide eyes reflecting the tension in the room.

“What do you want from me?” I demanded, my voice quivering with a mix of defiance and unease. I had to protect the children and find a way out of this situation.

Brian didn’t pause; he continued to close the distance between us, a predatory glint in his eyes. “I want you to be my girlfriend,” he replied, his words chilling in their audacity. “Or at least to act like that, so everyone can see what I do. To prove that he can’t have a solid relationship because he isn’t fit to be clan leader.”

His demand sent a shock wave of anger through me. Brian’s manipulative schemes had reached a new low, using our relationship as a pawn in his power games. The audacity of his plan, to use me as a means to tarnish James’ leadership, left me seething with indignation.

As Brian’s sinister demands echoed through the daycare, my heart felt as if it were being crushed under an unbearable weight. The gun trembling in Charlene’s hand was a stark reminder of the dire situation we found ourselves in. It was a nightmare, and it seemed there was no escape from it.

My mind raced, searching for a way out, a solution that would spare the lives of the children and the hostages. But Brian’s chilling ultimatum left me with few options. I had to buy time, keep everyone safe, and somehow reach out to James for help.

I took a deep breath, trying to summon every ounce of courage I possessed, and responded, “Brian, you can’t expect me to do that. I won’t fake a relationship with you, and I won’t be a pawn in your game. Please, there has to be another way.”

His cold eyes bore into mine, and his grip on the situation tightened. The terror in Charlene’s eyes was evident, but her love for the children seemed to be holding her back from carrying out Brian’s cruel threats.

His sinister smile widened as he threatened, “You have one hour to think about it, Sadie. One hour before I take one of the kids away from you, and every hour after that, another life will be at stake.”

My heart ached as I looked around at the frightened children and the hostages, realizing the weight of the situation we were in. I couldn’t let them down. I had to find a way to outsmart Brian, protect the innocent, and reach out to James without raising suspicion.

As the clock’s ticking became a deafening reminder of the peril we were in, I knew that my every move would have to be calculated, my words carefully chosen. I had to find a way to keep everyone safe while unraveling the sinister plot Brian had set into motion. I wasn’t going to do anything to tarnish James’ reputation or to let that asshole anywhere near me, but I also couldn’t let the children get hurt. I had an hour to do something .

The kids, understandably terrified by the ordeal, clung to each other, and to Mookie too, who was very unhappy to have Brian here. The room felt tense and stifling, their innocent eyes filled with fear. One of the little ones, a sweet boy with tear filled-eyes, couldn’t contain his anxiety any longer. He peed his pants, and I knew this was our chance.

I quickly seized the moment, maintaining a facade of submission and control. With a calm demeanor, I approached Brian and said, “Brian, it’s not easy to keep everyone calm. One of the kids has had an accident. I should clean him up and change his clothes. That way, at least he’ll feel more comfortable. At least we won’t make all the children cry.”

Brian, though still menacing, seemed to consider my request. Perhaps it was a reminder that I was a mother and, even under these circumstances, a caretaker. He grudgingly nodded his approval. “Fine, I don’t want to have to smell urine anyway. It’s disgusting. But don’t take a long time. My patience is wearing thin.”

“Watch the kids,” I mouthed at Charlene, hoping she could keep her finger off the trigger while I got us help. Because I was going to get us help now.

She nodded, with fear flooding her gaze, as I took the trembling child by the hand and led him to the bathroom. I knew that it was a small window of opportunity, and I had to make the most of it.

Once inside the bathroom, I whispered to the little boy, “We need to be very quiet and brave. We’ll get you cleaned up, and then we’ll work on getting all of us out of here, okay?”

His wide, frightened eyes met mine, and he nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. It was a delicate balance, pretending to follow Brian’s instructions while secretly planning our escape. I knew that we had to be cautious, moving step by step, all while maintaining our hope and determination to break free from this nightmare.

“I will be back, okay? Just stay here. Don’t move.”

I dressed the boy quickly and then took a moment to huddle in the staff closet. Inside there, my heart pounded like a drum. I couldn’t find my phone, but I did grab one. Luckily, I knew James’ phone number by heart. Now that I had it, I wasn’t ever going to forget it.

Sadie: 911. Brian is here at the daycare. Charlene is under his control.

As I pressed send, my anxiety deepened. What if he didn’t receive the message in time? What if they discovered my plea for help? The seconds stretched into hours, or at least that was how it felt, my eyes glued to the phone, willing James to respond.

The relief washed over me as his reply finally appeared on the screen. Thank God! He’d seen my cry for help. We weren’t on our own any longer.

James: I’m on my way, Sadie. Stay calm, trust me. I won’t let anything happen. I promise.

The words were a lifeline, a promise that I held onto with all my strength. James was coming to save me, and for the first time in this nightmarish situation, a glimmer of hope pierced the darkness. My pulse raced as I tried to keep myself calm as I texted back.

Sadie: He wants me to pretend to be his girlfriend to undermine you. He has some insane plan to make everyone distrust you. I don’t know what he’s capable of here.

James: He’s an asshole. No one will believe him. Just bide your time.

Sadie: I make no promises if that bastard tries to sleep with me, but I’ll do my best to keep my head screwed on. He is giving me an hour before he loses his shit.

As I tucked the phone back into my pocket, I took a deep breath and tried to steady my nerves. The strange and sinister world beyond the closet door awaited, but I had something that I hadn’t had before–a plan and James on his way to rescue me. I lifted my head up high and went to find the boy so we could head back into the other room, to check that Charlene was okay and hadn’t done anything to the kids, and to make sure that Brian hadn’t done anything stupid. I wasn’t going to let him win here. Not a chance.
