Chapter 25

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza was a cavernous expanse of white marble, gilded cornices, and towering crystal chandeliers that threw a sharp, fragmented light over the four hundred guests below.

The air was thick with the scent of hot wax, champagne, and the expensive, powdery perfume of the city’s financial elite.

It was a loud, high-velocity world that Felicity had once navigated with mechanical precision, but tonight, she stepped into it as an observer, her body wrapped in the heavy, dark green silk of her evening gown.

Tucker’s hand was firm on the small of her back, his touch carrying that smooth, public pride of a successful corporate counsel presenting his elegant, recovered wife to the board.

"Felicity!"

Chloe broke away from a circle near the ice sculpture, her champagne flute tilting slightly as she navigated the crowded floor.

She was wearing a sharp, asymmetric black dress, her eyes instantly scanning Felicity’s face with a fierce, quiet intensity before they dropped to the silk cuff hiding the white gauze on her right wrist.

"Chloe," Felicity said, her voice dropping into that sweet, even register as she stepped forward to offer her left cheek for a brief, familiar press.

"You look... incredible," Chloe whispered, her fingers lingering on Felicity's bare elbow, her voice thick with a mixture of profound relief and bubbling, anxious curiosity.

"Tucker told Mark you were doing so much better, but when I saw that ledger log you requested...

Lissy, I haven't slept in two days. What is happening? Are you okay?"

"I’ve never been better," Felicity said, her lips curving into a small, unblemished smile that looked completely tranquil. She leaned in slightly, her breath brushing Chloe’s ear over the roar of the string quartet.

"Just ensure Table 6 stays exactly as we discussed.

And stay tuned for the evening's grand finale, Chloe. You won't want to miss it."

Before Chloe could press further, a familiar, heavy wave of jasmine cut through the champagne mist.

"There you two are!"

Brianne stepped into the circle, her posture immaculate, her blonde hair woven into an elaborate, crown-like braid that caught the light of the chandeliers.

She was wearing a stunning, ice-blue column gown that made her look like a winter monarch.

She reached out, her long, pale fingers wrapping around Felicity’s left arm with a warm, sisterly enthusiasm.

"Tucker told me you were ready. You are absolutely breathtaking tonight," Brianne murmured, her sharp blue eyes scanning Felicity's face.

But as she looked into Felicity's calm, untroubled expression, a tiny, almost imperceptible fracture appeared at the corner of Brianne’s mouth.

Her unblinking gaze lingered on the smooth, unlined forehead, the steady set of her jaw, and the complete absence of the hyper-vigilant, panicked tremors that had defined her for weeks.

It was a micro-deviation—a brief, cold flicker of discomfort crossing Brianne's features as she realized the woman standing before her was not the unravelling patient she had left in the woods on Monday. She looked... entirely like herself.

"Thank you, Bree," Felicity said, her voice dripping with an intense, sugary sweetness that was entirely unassailable.

She didn't pull her arm back; instead, she placed her left hand over Brianne’s cool fingers, killing her with an absolute, suffocating kindness.

"I owe it all to you and Tucker. You've both been so incredibly attentive during my... little spell."

"We just wanted you safe, sweetie," Brianne said, her voice dropping into that velvet, patronizing register, though her fingers remained slightly stiff against Felicity's silk sleeve.

"I know," Felicity murmured, her smile widening just enough to show her teeth. "And that's why I'm so very much looking forward to this evening. In fact, Bree, I have something very special in mind later tonight to thank you for everything—absolutely everything—you’ve done for me in that house."

Brianne blinked, the ice-blue fabric of her gown shifting as she straightened her spine. "Oh? You didn't have to do that, honey."

"Oh, but I did," Felicity whispered, her eyes locked onto Brianne's with a devastating, serene clarity that made the psychological tension between them vibrate like a struck wire. "A data analyst always ensures the books are perfectly balanced. It’s going to be a beautiful evening. I can’t wait for it to begin. "
