Ch. 35
The Melody Beneath the Lights
Intramural D-1
The academy's grand gymnasium had transformed into a ballroom of colors and light. Curtains of silk shimmered from the ceiling, and golden chandeliers swayed gently as the students filled the seats in semi-formal attire.
The opening ceremony of the Intramurals had begun.
Selene Valen walked through the corridor silently, her heels clicking lightly on the polished floor.
She wore an elegant white off-shoulder dress that reached just above her knees simple, yet breathtaking.
The fabric had a faint shimmer that caught the light whenever she moved.
Her hair was loosely curled, half-tied with a silver ribbon.
A faint scent of jasmine followed her as she walked, delicate but unmistakable.
She looked ethereal like someone from a painting who accidentally stepped into the real world.
I didn't sign up to be the center of attention, she thought, sighing inwardly as she checked her reflection one last time.
Inside the gym, laughter and chatter filled the air. Students from all grade levels mingled boys in crisp semi-formal attire, girls in pastel or jewel-toned dresses. Teachers welcomed guests and sponsors, flashing proud smiles for the academy's achievements.
The program began with the academy head giving a speech about unity, sportsmanship, and pride. The crowd clapped, the music played softly, and a few performances followed dances, songs, speeches.
Everything went smoothly.
Until the lights dimmed.
The host's voice echoed through the speakers.
"And now, for our special performance a musical piece by none other than our first-year student... Selene Valen."
The entire gym hushed in surprise.
Liana, who was sitting among her classmates, gasped loudly.
"Selene?! She didn't even tell me!"
Across the room, Ethan leaned forward, intrigued, a lazy grin tugging at his lips.
"Well, another music to my ears."
Adrian Vale, however, stayed quiet, eyes narrowing slightly in recognition.
And in one of the darker corners of the gym, Raze stood with his arms crossed a faint bruise still visible near his lip. The flickering stage lights reflected in his eyes as he muttered, "So she really said yes, huh?"
The curtains parted.
Selene stepped onto the stage.
A spotlight fell on her like a soft, golden, almost divine. She carried her violin with grace, her expression calm but unreadable. The audience barely breathed as she placed the instrument on her shoulder. The moment her bow touched the strings, the world fell silent.
The melody began sweet and delicate at first, like a lullaby whispered in moonlight.
Then it swelled, weaving notes of longing and pride, every sound precise and aching with emotion.
Selene's fingers danced with mastery. Her white dress swayed with each movement, the lights catching her every turn.
Every student in that gym, whether they knew her or not, sat frozen completely captivated.
Even the teachers exchanged glances, visibly impressed.
Raze, from afar, tilted his head slightly.
"She's got fire... even in calm."
Ethan let out a low whistle.
"It's different from what she performed before."
Adrian said nothing, but the faintest ghost of a smile formed on his lips. Liana had both hands over her chest, whispering, "She's amazing..." her eyes shimmering with pride.
As Selene reached the climax of her piece, the music shifted strong, fierce, yet beautifully tragic. It told a story of someone fighting to be free, to be heard, to be remembered. When the final note echoed through the gym, it lingered haunting and breathtaking.
Then came the silence.
And a heartbeat later, applause erupted like thunder.
The students stood.
Teachers clapped.
Some even whistled in awe.
Selene simply bowed politely, her expression calm, though her heartbeat raced beneath the calm surface.
That should keep them quiet for a while, she thought dryly.
As the applause continued, the host spoke again, her voice bright and trembling from excitement.
"Thank you, Miss Valen, for that beautiful and powerful performance! Truly a performance to remember!"
After the final thanksgiving message, the lights dimmed once more and the fireworks began. Bright colors exploded outside the open gym windows, painting the night sky in blue, red, and silver.
The crowd cheered, couples took photos, and laughter filled the air. Selene stood quietly near the edge of the balcony, watching the fireworks reflect in her eyes. Liana found her and hugged her from behind.
"You were incredible! You didn't tell me you could play like that!"
Selene smiled faintly. "You didn't ask."
"You're impossible sometimes." Liana pouted.
"Maybe," Selene replied softly, looking back at the sky.
And from afar, Raze watched her the girl in white who played like she was born for the stage, yet looked like she wanted nothing more than to disappear into the night sky.
The last firework bloomed gold and white, bright as daylight before fading into smoke.
And as the cheers died down, one thing was certain:
The name Selene Valen would be remembered long after this night.
