30. Dax #2
“Where the fuck did she go now?” Void yelled, his voice fast approaching. “We play together, little demon, you promised!”
“Hurry up and stop yelling!” I barked once he made it over the same hood joining me. “Keep low and move fast. Whoever has the most kills wins.”
“What do I win?” Void asked, giving me a smile that was mostly teeth and would be terrifying if I didn’t know him.
I tapped my chin with my gun. “Winner’s choice?”
“You swear?” Void challenged, narrowing his eyes at me.
Rolling mine, I nodded. “Yes, I swear. Now can we get on with this or else they’ll all be dead before we get to them?”
“I’ll go right,” Void announced and was on the move.
The thrill of the challenge running through my veins, I moved to the left around the front of the car, popping my head up and saw a target hunched and moving quickly.
Taking aim, I clipped him in the neck only to follow it up with a headshot.
The space was littered with all kinds of bikes, bodies, and cars.
My fear was that any of them could be rigged to blow up—I’ve already seen how that’s a favorite move.
Reminding myself not to step outside of this section or risk getting blown, I wove through the space picking off people as I went.
Some of my crew caught sight of me and joined in the fray, leaving the safety of the car barrier.
This is how we’re going to win this, taking the fight to them, not hiding away.
Darting out to catch a victim off guard, I sliced a dagger across his neck, but I didn’t see the one right behind him, gun at the ready.
The body of the man I just killed was heavy, and I was distracted, letting him take me down.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” I muttered, trying to drop my knife and grab my gun as a dead body was squashing me.
“Die, you fucking bitch,” the Mad Dog snarled, but before he could pull the trigger, a hulking form appeared behind him, grabbing him by the neck.
Void pulled him back so the biker could see his face which then drained of blood.
“What did you say to my little demon? No one talks to her like that and lives.” With a swift move of his hand, Void snapped the biker’s neck and tossed him away.
He then came over and pulled the dead guy off me, offering his hand. “You need to be more careful.”
“Thanks, big guy,” I said, patting him on the shoulder, grabbing my gun off my thigh, and shooting a guy who’d been trying to sneak up on us. “I got your back too.”
After that, we went off together working in perfect sync, taking out enemies left and right, knowing just how to move not to be in each other’s way.
At one point, a guy tried to get the machine gun again, so Void literally tossed me over a car to get to him faster, shooting as I arced through the air.
Landing, I couldn’t help but laugh at how badass that moment just was.
“Did you just see that!” I popped up and asked, checking to see if anyone else was around.
“Yeah, I saw it alright,” a voice I recognize spat. “Thanks for finally stepping out into the open.”
Spinning, I found Pinky, the bartender whose nose I’d broken the first time we’d met, had a gun trained on me. “I know you.”
“Fucking cunt, coming in and working your womanly wiles over our leaders. They were good men until you came into the picture, respected the old ways of things even if they had some newer ideals. They were young and would have grown out of it, but they won’t now with you here fucking everything up,” Pinky ranted.
Well, what do you know, the mole up and decided to show himself? Never would I have guessed it was a pissed-off old guy with a grudge. I take that back. I can totally believe it.
“You really sure this is the move you want to make? Guess it doesn’t really matter, you’re a dead man either way, snitching our movements to the enemy,” I mused.
“I didn’t tell them shit unless it had to do with you. Once you’re gone, they’ll get over it and see that I was right,” Pinky reasoned.
I nodded, pursing my lips. “Yeah, I don’t know about that but good to know you didn’t sell them out completely, but I’m still going to have to kill you.”
“Ha, I don’t see how that’s going to happen as all I had to do was keep you talking until they could get behind you and cut you off from Void,” Pinky informed me.
Laughter burst out of me as I shook my head, slapping my leg with my gun. “Oh God, that’s funny,” I said, standing up and wiping a tear from my eye. “It also tells me you know nothing about your enforcer.”
Letting my legs go out, I dropped like a dead body to the ground as I lifted my gun and shot Pinky twice in the chest. Once I hit the ground, I looked back, pulling my arm over my head, and shot at the guy who appeared from behind, taking him out too.
Three more guys moved in, but shots from elsewhere took out two, leaving me to clean up the last one.
Void vaulted over a fallen bike and paused a moment to make sure there wasn’t anyone else as I got up.
“Little demon, how did you know I was there?” Void asked as he approached me.
Grinning, I wrapped my arm around his waist. “You’re never far from me, and you always have my back. No way you’d fall for something that would keep you from coming when I needed you.”
