6. Dax
DAX
Ghost was waiting for me out in the hall, his whole body practically vibrating with excitement.
I think if we had to walk farther than the ten steps, he’d have been skipping his way down the hall.
He led the way into another office, walked right up to a bookcase, and pulled it away from the wall.
It was on hinges so it glided silently, presenting an opening into another room that was clearly the murder room.
In the middle of the room was something that reminded me of what you would sit in at the dentist. Only this chair had straps on it to make sure your victim didn’t have a chance to make a run for it.
The floor was white tile with a slight pitch to the middle where a drain was located.
I felt white was a bold choice for a murder room, but you knew if you’d cleaned up the blood well enough.
Along one wall was a workbench with tons of drawers and hooks that kept all the tools in an orderly fashion.
The rest of the room was pretty basic—white walls with a glossy coating to keep anything from sticking or staining. Upon closer inspection, I found a projector in the ceiling that could easily be watched off the blank wall before it.
“Damn, they really thought of everything, didn’t they?” I said as I pulled open one of the drawers and saw various sets of pliers.
Ghost appeared next to me and pulled open another drawer with a bunch of glass bottles in it. “They even have acids to use. Have you ever seen someone as they watch a drop of acid eat away at their skin? It only takes one or two drops before they’re singing like a canary.”
“Can’t say I’ve gotten into the fancy stuff,” I commented. “If I have my knife, I usually get the job done.”
“Did I hear you say you have someone you need to get to sing for you?” Ghost asked with a raised brow. “I’d be happy to show you a few things. They’ve got pretty much anything you can think of in this space.”
Glancing around the room, I felt this might be the best option. If Ken were a professional, it would take something more than my sass and a knife to get him to spill anything.
“Want to come down and help me escort our guest up to his seat?” I inquired.
Ghost placed a hand on his chest and bowed. “It would be my delight.”
“You two are on the same level of fucking crazy, aren’t you?” Void asked, his gaze bouncing between the two of us. “Remind me never to leave you two alone for too long. I don’t want to miss out on it if you blow something up.”
I laughed, knowing Void wasn’t bothered by how bloodthirsty and crazy Ghost and I were. “You got it, big guy. I already promised that we’d always play together.”
“Yeah, but I wasn’t with you for the rocket launcher, now was I?” Void argued. “This is what I mean. Cam got to witness it, and I was stuck getting my ass shot at, trapped in a shitty apartment building.”
I grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him down to eye level. “I promise if there’s ever the need for a rocket launcher, flame thrower, or any other highly illegal weapons we might need, you’ll be there.”
“I better, little demon, or I’ll smack your ass so red you won’t be able to sit for days,” Void warned before snaking a hand around my neck and kissing the hell out of me.
“Now, let’s go get Ken and see what he can tell us.
Something tells me we shouldn’t give Marco too much time to get his shit together. ”
“Couldn’t agree more with you,” I muttered as Void and I walked out hand in hand.
Cam fell in step with us, his hands in his pockets, and he glanced at Void just as we stepped on the elevator. “The rocket launcher was pretty badass. I’d use one of those again.”
Void’s head snapped in his direction. “You shot it?”
“God no, I’m not sure Ghost would have let anyone pry that thing out of his hands. Just impressed with the job it did,” Cam answered with a chuckle.
Void narrowed his eyes at my dark knight like he didn’t quite believe him, but Ghost piped up.
“Seriously, I’ve been trying to find a way to use that thing for almost two years.
Assassins are supposed to be more subtle than that, so you bet your ass I wasn’t going to let anyone, not even Harper, take that fun from me. ”
Shoving the man with my hip, he looked down. “See, now you can turn off the eye daggers and let the man live another day.”
With a grunt, Void let it go but pulled me close and nuzzled his face in my hair before we stepped off the elevator.
“I thought it was hard for the four of us to manage things, but damn, Dax, you had to pick a whole bunch of alpha males, didn’t you?” Ghost commented, leading the way down the hall then stopped and looked around. “Where are we going?”
I snickered and waved an arm for him to follow. “This way.” Glancing back at Ghost, I questioned his earlier statement. “Did you think I’d pick men I could walk all over? What fun would that be for me? Cam is as whipped as I want them, and he’ll still argue with me when he feels the need to.”
Cam came to a halt looking at me, shocked. “Beautiful, you think I’m whipped?”
“Yes,” the rest of us said in unison.
“Hmm,” Cam responded with a contemplative look. “Interesting that you all feel the same about that.”
Ghost clapped him on the shoulder. “Don’t take it too hard. I’m the exact same way with Harper. If she’d told me I couldn’t come play, I’d have told Wes no. Thankfully, she loves me enough to let me spend time with my new friends.”
“Good god,” I said with a snort. “I should’ve been recording this conversation for Harper to hear. She’d laugh her ass off.”
The conversation came to an end as we arrived at the door, but I tossed it open at the sounds of a struggle. Ken was up out of his chair, broken handles in hand, using them as weapons against Charlie and Daniel. The two seemed to have taken a beating but were holding their own against this asshole.
Void grabbed the back of my shirt and pulled me back as Cam and Ghost dove into the fight.
I watched the two of them take down Ken in a few quick moves from the safety of Void’s arms. Leaning my head back, I relaxed into his body, letting him know I wasn’t looking to join in.
Cam took out Ken’s legs at the same time Ghost used one of the chair arms and slammed it into Ken’s face.
His head snapped back at the force of the hit, aiding in his descent.
It didn’t knock him out, but it dazed him so that he laid on the floor for a moment, giving Ghost and Cam enough time to grab him and haul him to his feet.
Blood dripped down Ken’s face as the two dragged him out of the room. “We’ll meet you up there,” Cam offered.
“Works for me. I’m just gonna make sure these two are good,” I said, gesturing my head toward Charlie and Daniel.
Ken struggled a moment, but Cam gave a growl of frustration and slammed an elbow into his temple, knocking the man out.
Now completely limp, they lugged him down the hall, the man’s dress shoes scraping on the floor as they went.
The dude shouldn’t have struggled if he didn’t want to get his ass handed to him.
Turning to Tommaso’s men, I stepped out of Void’s hold. “You guys good?” I asked.
Daniel lifted a hand, tentatively touched his lip, and winced. “Other than our pride, I think we’ll survive. Your guys made us look like amateurs.”
“Yeah…” I drawled. “One’s an FBI agent, and the other is one of the best assassins in the US. I wouldn’t take it too hard.”
Their eyes went wide as they looked after the two men arguing about something as they went. “What the fuck is a Fed doing with you?” Daniel asked.
Void was up in the poor man’s face faster than I could blink. “The fuck you saying about my little demon?”
Daniel’s face drained of what little color it still had left. “N-nothing, nothing at all,” he stammered. “I didn’t mean anything by it… just curious how he got wrapped up in this whole thing.”
“If you ask him, he’ll say something stupid like because he loves me,” I said, tugging Void back. “Me, on the other hand, it’s because I own his ass.”
“What?” Charlie asked, his face scrunched.
I sighed then ran a hand through my hair. “Look, don’t worry about him. He’s loyal to me until the day he dies and then some if he has anything to say about it. Hell, I think he’d fuck the shit out of the devil to make sure we could be together in the afterlife.”
“Ha, I’d kill the devil so I could rule over hell, and then there’d be no worry about shit like that,” Void countered.
Slipping my hand into his, I leaned on his arm, looking up at him. “Seriously, you need to stop getting all sappy on me, big guy. If you’re not careful, I might end up fucking you right here in this room.”
Void hauled me up, and I instinctively wrapped my legs around his waist. “Then I’d have to kill those two. No one gets to see your sexy body and how you look when you come around my cock but your husbands.”
I glanced over at the two men whose eyes were laser-focused on us. “That’s the only warning you two get. Leave now, and if you don’t want innocent blood on your hands, make sure no one uses the other room to watch either.”
Clearly not willing to take any chances, Void pulled his gun and shot three times into the large glass pane and shattered the whole thing. “Now there’s no question we’ll be alone.”
Grinning, I grabbed his face and slammed my mouth to his. “Fuck, I love your crazy ass,” I murmured against his lips. With my gun in hand, I pointed it at the pair. “I’d leave now before I can’t hold myself back and whip out his dick. Just like he said, no one gets to see that beast but me.”
It took them two seconds to flee the room before Void dropped me on the table. “Little demon, we have work to do, so this is going to be hard, rough, and quick.”
“Just the way I like it,” I purred. “Don’t hold back.”
