Chapter 15

Liz

Every nerve ending in my scalp was on fire as Kyle attempted to drag me from my car using only my hair. An instant after the glass had shattered, he had reached through and unlocked my door, gaining access to me in less time than I thought possible.

Once I was standing, he kept a firm grip on my hair and turned to face me. “Why is it always the hard way with you, huh?”

I had to distract him. Keep him talking. With any luck, Brock had found Nate by now, and they were on their way here. “Was it you who broke into my place.”

He laughed. “Obviously, we needed to have a conversation, you and I, but you were out with whoever that guy was I saw you with downtown.”

So, he was mad about Nate, but he wouldn’t have seen me with another guy if he hadn’t been where I was. “How long have you been following me?”

“Following you? I’ve been keeping an eye on you since we met. No woman of mine is going to be running around all over town behind my back.” His grip tightened.

I needed to keep him distracted, and I knew he loved to rant, especially about things he thought I had done wrong.

“What did you want to say, I’m here now.

Tell me.” I had a few new skills since training with Nate.

But I wasn’t an expert. I needed him distracted so I could land the moves to save my own life.

I couldn’t afford for him to see it coming.

“I cant have my woman whoring around with some asshole. You’ll learn one way or another.”

He may think that I was his. He may think that I would learn. But I wasn’t and I wouldn’t. What I would do, is kick his ass.

Instinct told me to pull away. To get away.

But all that pulling away would do would cause me pain and give him more control.

We had gone over this in self-defence class, and I was fucking glad we had.

Instead of pulling away, I pulled him closer.

I lay one of my hands over the one of his holding my hair and the other on his same wrist. With both of my hands, I held his firmly against my scalp.

It kept him from pulling my hair and being in control.

He didn’t seem to think I had accomplished anything. He didn’t even pause in his rant.

My stomach was in my throat. Tears stung the backs of my eyes, but I knew what I had to do next. I grabbed his closed fist with both of my hands and held on tight.

“What the—”

He didn’t complete the sentence. I rotated my body slightly bringing his arm with me, leaving his shoulder cocked at an uncomfortable angle, just as he started to resist, I brought my head down and twisted his thumb up. The angle on his wrist forced him to kneel and let go of my hair.

Holy shit, it worked.

Now was not the time for a happy dance, it was time to run.

I made it all of two steps before he caught my ankle.

I went down hard on my opposite knee, ripping my jeans.

It stung like a bitch but being on the ground had its advantages.

Most of my training with Nate had been from the mat.

He flipped me onto my back and started to crawl up my body, looking like an unhinged animal in the dark.

Before he could even get his hands around my neck, I had him up and off me the way I had learned at the gym.

He was momentarily stunned, and I jumped onto his back.

“You couldn’t just leave me alone, could you?

” Now that I had the upper hand, I let myself feel the anger that was hidden under the fear.

I got him flat on his stomach, with one of his arms pinned as he struggled to buck me off.

The anger was mixed with a solid mix of self-pity, and I just wanted this to be over.

For him to be gone and for me to be able to sleep at night.

I could beat the shit out of a punching bag when this was over but for now, I had to keep in control of myself and him. “Why didn’t you just let me go?”

“Because you are mine.”
