Chapter 2
Everly
I wake with a start, my heart pounding as the events of the previous afternoon come rushing back. The memory of Xavier and the dark allure of his world linger in my mind, leaving me shaken. I roll over, my eyes darting to the clock—it's still early, the sun barely peeking through the curtains.
Talon's desperate call echoes in my head. I know I have to meet this Xavier Ravenwood, the man who holds my brother's fate in his hands. It's a departure from my usual routine, but then again, cleaning up Talon's messes is nothing new. I sigh, knowing I have no other choice.
I rise, my movements weighed down by sleep as I prepare for the day ahead. I choose a simple, high-necked dress, its pale blue fabric flowing around my body, providing a sense of security. The modest outfit is my armor, a way to maintain my dignity in the face of this powerful man. I twist my hair into a loose bun, letting a few tendrils frame my face.
After a quick breakfast, I make my way to Ember's Glow, responsibility settling on my shoulders as I think about the day ahead. As I step inside, the scent of fresh coffee and the hum of activity greet me, offering a momentary respite from the anxiety that has been building since I woke. I lose myself in my work, organizing donations and coordinating with volunteers. It's a comforting routine, one that usually grounds me.
Max's smile, so genuine and carefree, finds me as I sort through boxes of supplies. Normally, that smile would brighten my whole day, but today, I can barely muster a return grin. My mind is consumed with thoughts of my brother and the mysterious Xavier Ravenwood. I know I should be focusing on the task at hand, but it's a losing battle. My thoughts wander down a path that leads away from the orderly world of Ember's Glow and into the unknown.
I feel a twinge of guilt as I realize I'm ignoring Max's friendly banter. He's such a kind soul, always eager to lend a helping hand or offer a listening ear. But today, my heart is elsewhere. I know I'm being selfish, but I can't bring myself to fully engage with Max or the work that usually fulfills me. My mind is already stepping into a new, uncertain realm, one that promises perhaps, just perhaps, a chance to save my brother.
But will it be the last time?
As the afternoon sun begins to cast long shadows, I find myself standing outside the Ravenwood, its opulence a slap in the face to the modest charity where I spend most of my days. Taking a deep breath, I step inside, my eyes adjusting to the dimly lit interior. The place exudes an air of exclusivity and mystery. Without needing help, I make my way to the office the guard led me to yesterday.
"Miss Fields, right on time," a deep voice greets me as I enter Xavier's office. He stands by the window, his tall frame commanding attention. His green eyes assess me, and I feel a shiver run through me, despite the warmth of the room.
"Mr. Ravenwood," I reply, though my hands betray my nerves, twisting the fabric of my dress. "I-I'm here regarding my brother."
"Yes, of course. Please, take a seat." He gestures to a sleek black leather chair, his manner both professional and slightly unsettling.
I sit, my eyes taking in the luxurious office—a world away from the cozy rooms of Ember's Glow. Xavier sits across from me.
"I understand your brother has found himself in a bit of a predicament."
"Yes, he... he's gotten himself into some trouble. I was hoping we could discuss a solution." My voice trembles slightly, and I clear my throat, determined to maintain my composure.
Xavier leans forward, his eyes holding a hint of amusement. "I believe I have a proposal that might interest you, Miss Fields. One that could solve your brother's... situation."
My heart quickens at the prospect of a solution. "What... what do you propose?"
"A contract, of sorts. One year of your complete submission, and I will ensure your brother's debt is erased. No more threats, no more worries." His words are laced with a subtle seduction, his voice like velvet, drawing me in.
I gasp, my eyes widening at the audacity of his suggestion. "Submission? But... I don't understand. What do you mean by that?"
Xavier's lips curve into a slight smile. "I'm sure you can imagine, Miss Fields. I'm a man who appreciates... certain pleasures. And I believe you could provide them."
My face flushes, and I feel a surge of anger mixed with embarrassment. "I-I can't... I won't..." I struggle to find the right words, my moral compass spinning wildly.
Sensing my hesitation, Xavier's expression softens. "I know this is a lot to ask, but I assure you, it's not without its benefits. You'd be well taken care of, and your brother would be free from his obligations."
"But... it's not right. I can't just... sell myself like that." My voice trembles, and I realize I'm on the verge of tears.
Xavier leans back, his eyes studying me. "I understand your hesitation, Miss Fields. It's a difficult decision. But sometimes, we must make sacrifices for those we love."
His words hit home, and I feel a wave of guilt. "I-I need to think about this. I can't just agree to something like this without considering the consequences."
"Of course, take your time. But remember, Miss Fields, time is of the essence. Your brother's situation won't wait."
I stare at Xavier, my mind racing as I try to process his offer. It's outrageous, and yet, there's a part of me that's tempted to accept, if only to save Talon. I can't help but wonder what this man has been through to make such a proposal.
"You don't know me, Mr. Ravenwood," I say. "I'm not some... some toy to be played with."
He leans forward, his eyes softening. "I don't see you as a toy, Everly. I see a woman who's strong, compassionate, and yes, perhaps a little na?ve. But that's not a bad thing."
My breath catches at the sound of my name on his lips. "Na?ve?" I repeat, my voice laced with a hint of offense.
"You've dedicated your life to helping others, to making the world a better place. That's admirable, but it can also leave you vulnerable." He pauses, his gaze holding mine. "I know what it's like to be taken advantage of, to be used by those you trust."
My heart skips a beat. "You do?" I ask, my curiosity getting the better of me.
"Yes," he says, his voice low and rough. "I've been there. I've made mistakes, trusted the wrong people. It's a hard lesson to learn."
I'm drawn in by his confession, my anger softening. "I... I don't know what to say. I just want to help my brother."
"I understand, and I want to help you both. But it's not just about the money, Everly. It's about control, about knowing you can trust someone to take care of you."
"Trust?" I laugh, the sound bitter. "You want me to trust you? A man who deals in... in..." I trail off, unable to find the right words.
"In pleasure and pain?" he finishes for me. "Yes, that's what I offer. But it's not just about the physical, Everly. It's about finding a place where you can let go, where you can be free."
I shake my head, my emotions warring within me. "I don't know if I can do that. I've always been the one taking care of others, making sure everyone is okay. I don't know how to... to let go."
Xavier's eyes glint with a hint of challenge. "Then maybe it's time you learned. Maybe it's time to discover what you've been missing."
I feel a strange mix of emotions—fear, curiosity. "I... I need to think about this. It's a lot to consider."
"Of course," he says, leaning back in his chair. "Take your time. But remember, Everly, sometimes the greatest rewards come from taking a chance."
I nod, my mind racing as I stand to leave. "I'll consider your offer, Mr. Ravenwood. But I can't promise anything."
"I understand. I'll have the contract drawn up. You can reach me whenever you're ready."
I exit his office, my legs feeling like lead as I navigate the opulent casino. I can't figure out what he's really asking of me. It's that simple to forgive the debt, but why a year from me? Shouldn't Talon bear the punishment?
Back at home, I find Talon lounging on the couch, his feet propped up on the coffee table. His nonchalant attitude is like a slap in the face after the conversation with Xavier.
"Talon, we need to talk," I say, unable to mask my frustration.
He sits up, his eyes flickering with a mix of curiosity and annoyance. "What's up, sis? You look like you've seen a ghost."
"I just came from meeting with Xavier Ravenwood."
"Oh yeah? And how's that rich guy doing?" Talon's tone is casual, as if we're discussing the weather.
"He's offered me a deal, Talon. A way to get you out of this mess." I pause, my heart pounding as I prepare to reveal the terms.
"A deal? What kind of deal?" He leans forward, his eyes now alert.
"He wants me to... submit to him for a year. In exchange, he'll forgive your debt." The words feel heavy in my mouth.
Talon's eyes widen, and for a moment, he's silent. Then, he lets out a low whistle. "Damn, sis. That's... quite the offer."
"It's outrageous! I can't believe he'd even suggest such a thing." I feel my cheeks flush with anger.
"Hey, hey, calm down. It's not that bad." Talon waves a hand dismissively. "I mean, it's a year, right? And he's a good-looking guy. Could be worse."
"Worse? Talon, this is my body, my life! I can't just give it away like that." My voice rises, and I struggle to keep my composure.
"I know, I know. But think about it. You agree to the year with him, and I promise, I'll straighten up. No more trouble, I swear." He gives me his most charming smile, the one that's gotten him out of countless scrapes.
"You promise?" I ask, skeptical. I don't even know why I'm asking. Maybe I'm hopeful that he'll change. I mean, this is a pretty big deal.
Wouldn't he take this opportunity to finally shape up?
"Cross my heart. Look, Everly, I know I've messed up. But this is our chance to fix things. I'll be good, I'll get a job, and we can put all this behind us." His eyes plead with me, and for a moment, I see a glimmer of the little boy he once was.
"Talon, this is a huge sacrifice." I bite my lip, torn between my desire to help him and my own sense of self-preservation.
"I know, sis. But think about it. We've always looked out for each other. This is my chance to make it up to you." He reaches out, taking my hand in his. "Please, Everly. I need you to do this. For me."
I sigh, my resolve weakening. "Fine. I'll do it. But you have to keep your word, Talon. No more trouble."
"Yes!" He brightens like the weight of the world has been lifted from his shoulders—and deposited onto mine. "Thank you, Ev. I won't let you down, I promise." He pulls me into a tight hug.
As I pull away, I can't help but wonder if I've made the right decision. My routine, my life as I know it, is about to shatter. And somewhere in the back of my mind, I think of Max.
A year with a man I only just met. What am I getting myself into?
