Vivien

Five Years Later

I close the bedroom door. “He’s asleep,” I whisper, slipping away from the hallway and over to the dining room table where Caleb and his team review the latest data from our sharks that we tagged last year.

“Love, come and look.” Caleb pulls me onto his lap and points to the large monitors they’ve set up. “This is your baby too.” I had to take a break during the last trimester of my pregnancy because the water made me nauseous.

“Thank you.”

“No, thank you. We couldn’t have done it without all your hard work, Vivien,” Max, our cinematographer, says.

“He’s right. You are vital to the team, my mermaid, and now you’ve added a future little biologist to join us soon.” Caleb kisses me with such abandon that we forget ourselves for a moment until the monitor goes off. A wail comes through.

“Relax, and enjoy the success. I’ll check on our son.

” He kisses me once more before lifting me off him to get up and get our boy.

He takes his time coming out, but when they come coasting into the room, Eric is wearing a different pajama set.

I give Caleb a questioning brow. “Let’s just say he wasn’t just crying because he missed my handsome face. ”

“I always miss your handsome face.”

“I miss it too,” Max adds.

“Me too,” Evan chimes in through the monitor.

“Me three,” his wife pipes up next to him.

“You are a bunch of goofy bas…” I press my fingers to his lips to stop him from saying it in front of Eric. Heaven forbid our child’s first word be a curse word. He’s way too young to start talking, but I can’t stop myself from being concerned.

“Sorry, my love.”
