Chapter Thirty-Six
Wyatt
I’m in bed on my side watching Blair sleep. She may have tried to hide it, but I can tell she is hurting badly. I move a piece of hair that’s fallen on her face, “How did I get so lucky?” I murmur out loud.
After we made some calls, she made me promise to stay with her. It’s killing me not being able to go and get Kade myself but the look on her face had me wanting to do whatever she asked. She’s afraid and I understand why.
My mind replays the events of last night over and over again. What could I have done differently? Why is it that the people I love, are the ones being targeted? It’s my fault. That’s how I feel and that is how Elena feels. I should have had his back, I thought I did. I press my fingers to my temple and sigh. My head is pounding with the constant thoughts and images flashing through my mind. I can’t lie here anymore. I slowly get out of bed and kiss Blair's forehead.
I hear my phone ring in the living room and rush out to grab it. Stuart lights up and I hit answer.
“Did you get him?” I ask through gritted teeth.
“Meet me at the hospital now, Kade’s alive. He’s fucking alive that stubborn son of a bitch. He needs blood and I know you have things going on at home but son, he needs you. We are on the way there now, get there.” He hangs up without another word and my heart is hammering in my chest.
I replay his words Kade’s alive. He was fucking alive when I left him. If he fucking dies it will be my fault! I slam the phone down and punch the wall I’m standing next to. My fist goes all the way through it, but I’m not satisfied. I punch it again and again until my knuckles are dripping with blood.
I feel cold soft hands on my back. Images…. Images of the men last night replay like a broken film. When I turn, I see him, the man with the gun, and I grip his throat until he can no longer breathe. I seethe, “Fucking die!” I scream into his face.
“Wyatt,” I hear a familiar voice.
Sweat covers my body and I feel my hands tremble.
“Wyatt, please.” A raspy voice pulls at me. I feel nails digging into my hands, and then they are on my face, softly stroking my cheek.
I shake my head when reality comes rushing back to me. A blurred figure is impaled to the wall by my hands. I blink a few times and see Blair. I tilt my head, not believing my own eyes. I follow the hands around her throat- my hands. I let go instantly and she coughs and sucks in air.
“Blair, I’m sorry.” I fall to my knees and wrap my hands around her waist.
“It’s ok. I know it was risky, but I hate seeing you like this. Wyatt, it’s not your fault. You couldn’t have known. But he needs you now, he’s alive and needs you. And you did go back for him, you did. We have to go.” I sit still and breathe in her scent.
“Wyatt, we have to go.” It finally breaks through.
I get to my feet and look her over, “You’re not going. ”
Her mouth falls open and she stomps in front of me, “Oh no, you are not going to fucking leave me here, again! I. Am. Going.”
I am walking to the bedroom to find my clothes and she’s on my heels. “Wyatt, I swear to god! I am fine! You can’t leave me here!” She shouts.
It’s cute how mad she gets when she doesn’t get her way. “Fine.” She goes to open her mouth to argue then snaps it shut.
“Fine? I can go?” I smirk and nod.
She doesn’t say anything else. She walks to the closet and throws on a dress and some flats. I pull on my shirt and sweatpants, and we head towards the door.
“Trent,” I yell, and he comes to the door.
“We are leaving, and you are coming with us.” He nods and steps aside. Slipping my shoes on, we head towards the car that’s waiting.
The purple clouds swirl above a perfect reflection of the storm I’m fighting inside. Blair is staring out the window and her hands are fisted in her lap. No matter what I am going through, I need to be there for her. She is what matters.
“Come here.” She jumps at the sudden noise and looks at me.
I hold my arm up as she scoots closer to me. I drape it over her shoulder and kiss the top of her head.
“Talk to me,” I almost beg, and she takes a deep breath.
Big tears streaming down her face. “I’m scared,” she admits, and I nod my head. She has been nothing but afraid since we left the hospital.
“My best friend was tortured. Her boyfriend, and your best friend, got shot saving her. I died. My mom was attacked. I… I… I can’t lose you, Wyatt. This battle that’s inside you, I can’t lose you to it. I won’t. The war outside is enough to crumble anyone, I can’t lose you to your own thoughts- your own personal destruction. I need you and they need you. Please, don’t leave me again.” For once in my life I am stunned and silent.
I know I am struggling, Kade just pushed me over the edge. I lost my mind the moment I woke up in the hospital and realized Blair was hurt. Before I can respond, my phone goes off.
I look down to see a text message from Stuart. It’s a picture of the piece of shit that got away. He’s tied up in Tiger’s basement. A smile spreads across my face. Just what I fucking needed.
Blair is looking at my phone and I smile harder when she speaks, “Is that him?”
“It’s one of them and I can’t wait to rip him to fucking shreds,” I grip the phone and she stiffens.
She’s silent for a moment, “I want to go with you.”
I tilt my head and raise my brow, “You understand I am going to kill him, right?”
“I want to help.” She swallows hard, and I can’t contain it- I slam my lips to hers and she moans into me.
“Anything you want.” Her smile is breathtaking, and she kisses me harder.
We arrive at the hospital and we both jump out. I had a wheelchair waiting for her. She scrunches her nose up, but she doesn’t fight it. I push her into the building, and we head straight to the elevator. Dr. Remus is waiting for me when the elevator doors open on the top floor.
“Mr. Eden, Mrs. Eden, we need to hurry. We need blood and lots of it.” He pulls me from the wheelchair, and I growl.
“Go. I’ll find Jamie and don’t worry Trent’s here. I’ll be with Elena. If you need more come find me. It’s the least I could do for everything he has done for me.” I watch her until he pulls me around the corner .
“Nurse Jamie is on her way, don’t worry. I wouldn’t leave her unprotected.” I clench my jaw and nod instead of ripping his fucking throat out.
“Sit,” He points to the only chair in this empty hospital room.
It’s a pale boring room with blue curtains and it stinks of sterile utensils. High ceilings, fluorescent lights, and a chair. That is what I have to keep me sane. He walks over to me, wraps my arm, and sticks me. “Pump your hand, it’ll make it go faster.” I do as he says.
“Where is he?”
“Surgery. He will be brought to this room once we can remove the bullet. He was lucky, really lucky. He must have tried to move in time, if he didn’t, he would have been killed instantly. The bullet grazed his left side and missed vital parts to keep him alive and himself. If we can get him this blood and remove the fragments, he could make a full recovery. Just keep pumping, I need to go check on him.”
I will burn down the fucking city until I find out who is behind these attacks. I will crush their bones beneath my feet. Then I will fuck my queen on top of them and let her rain down on their ashes. They’ve just started a war they cannot win. I will come out victorious.
