Chapter Thirty-Eight

Wyatt

“The girls are still in Elena’s room. We need to go, someone is trying to break in.” I get to my feet and start moving on reflex.

I grab my gun, making sure the clip is loaded, and flip off the safety. “This is why I told you to fucking stay with them,” I seethe at Trent- who has regret written all over his face. He says nothing but nods.

“If we go to the right and make our way to their room from the other hallway, we can catch them off guard,” Kaleb instructs.

I rip the IV out and we make our way to the door. “Blair, where are you?” A man calls out.

Kaleb signals to the right, when I look up, I see the man in a ski mask making his way to their room. The air is thick with the smell of blood and a pungent odor of nitroglycerin, sawdust, and graphite. We quickly make our way to the hallway, firing as we go. There are about twenty men here that do not belong. When we turn the corner, bodies are on the floor and blood is coating the tiles. Light fixtures are hanging from the ceiling from being shot and papers mixed with blood are scattered across the floor. A phone hangs off the hook. Trent is flanking me, and Kaleb is ahead. I look up just in time to see a man aiming his gun right at Trent’s head. I fire before he can even think to do so. The man collapses on top of a dead nurse. The elevator is in view and when it opens, I see Stuart walk out with about ten men flanking him. He locks eyes with me and nods before taking off towards the gunfire behind us.

We make our way to the hallway that leads us to the room, but it’s blocked by beds and bodies that litter the floor.

“Shit, we have to go back.” Kaleb’s voice is barely a whisper.

We turn to go back when three men start firing at us. We dive behind the beds, flipping them over for cover. Trent slips on a pool of blood, stumbling. I see it all in slow motion: he falls, turns, and aims, but one of the attackers fires. I kick the bed, pushing him out of the way just in time. Kaleb takes aim and fires, hitting the shooter right between the eyes- the other two scatter.

I look over the bed to make sure he is ok and offer him my hand. “Thanks, boss.” He’s holding his side- pretty sure he broke a rib with how he landed.

I pick his gun up off the floor where it slid, when I kicked the bed out, and hand it to him. I look around and see we are alone. “The girls.” Kaleb motions behind us.

I look up and see a nurse and two women rush out of a room. I call out but they don’t hear me. The alarm stopped going off at some point, so now all I hear is the shouting and screaming of the wounded.

Making our way back, I see more bodies on the ground but not of our people. I look up when I hear a girl scream, “NO!” followed by a gunshot.

“He’s going to fucking die and I’ll make you watch, bitch!” She screams so loud- it echoes off the walls.

I can’t think, I just act. I run towards her screaming voice. When I round the corner I see Blair on top of a man stabbing him with a pen relentlessly. He’s dead but she doesn’t seem to notice as she plunges it in over and over again. Trent and Kaleb both run to the other two while I slowly approach her. Bending down, I slowly put my hands on hers, covering mine in the blood of the man she killed. Her feral eyes meet mine as she screams at me and then stops. “Wyatt?” Her small voice breaks and I pull her off the man and into my arms.

She grips me so tight like she is afraid this isn’t real. “I’m here Little Dove. I’ve got you,” I whisper into her hair.

She pulls back and whips her head around, “Jamie!”

I look down and find Jamie on the floor with Kaleb, covered in blood. Kaleb is frantically looking for the wound.

“Her shoulder, it’s her shoulder.” She pulls away from me and rushes to them.

Elena comes back with medical supplies and hands it to Kaleb. He rips her shirt to find a bullet wound in her shoulder. “It’s a flesh wound baby, you are going to be ok.” Her face has paled but she manages to smile.

“She saved me.” He looks at Blair and then back at Jamie.

“Thank you,” he says sincerely.

“You’re welcome,” she smiles and pats Jamie's leg.

“We have to find Kade.”

“Kaleb take her into this room.” I point to the room that hasn’t been touched.

“The threats almost eliminated, stay here with her. I’ll call when it’s safe.” He picks Jamie up and makes his way to the room- hearing the locks click in place, I turn towards the staircase.

“He’s in surgery, we go to the stairs.” Blair grabs my hand and then Elena’s. I kiss her forehead, placing her hand on my back, so I can use my hands if I need to.

“Don’t let go of me,” I instruct, and she grips my shirt tighter .

“Are you ok?” I can’t help but ask as we walk over the body of the man she stabbed to death.

“Yes.” It’s one word that’s full of so much more, but the look in her eyes tells me she is just fine.

"Take this," I say as I hand Elena the gun I've just taken from the man on the floor. She wipes her face and clicks off the safety. Thankful that Kade taught her how to use a gun, we turn, and make our way to the exit.

“Let me go first.” Trent makes his way to the door first.

He stops, looks around, and enters. A few gunshots go off and Blair stiffens. Trent’s head pokes out and she relaxes. What the fuck is that about? I know they spent some time together with me being away, that better be all it is.

She pats my arm and I look down at her- she nods towards the door. I will deal with this later. I make the girls go in first and then I head in last. Looking up and down the stairwell, happy to find it empty.

“Fourth floor,” Trent instructs, and we make our way there.

As we step into the long hallway, a single beam of light captures our attention. The distant beep of a monitor breaks the silence. I take a moment, closing my eyes and inhaling deeply. It’s my fault.

I clench my jaw and push past everyone, throwing open the door with my gun drawn. The sight before me stops me in my tracks.

"We've been expecting you," a red-headed, freckle-faced man says with a smirk.

"Gerald."
