Chapter 22

He missed him.

It was different from how he used to miss him during those years he’d been away on Synastry. Now, the yearning was there but altered.

Was this the bond between an alpha and omega?

The invisible thread that connected them the moment he’d offered the bite? To be honest, Kian hadn’t personally felt much in that moment aside from desire. But that was nothing new. Desire was always there when Sky was involved.

Did Sky feel differently? Had he that night?

Did he feel something…cosmic?

Kian had heard various stories about other mated couples. Some claimed it was world-shattering. That the moment they’d shared the bite and created the bond, their skin had heated, and there’d been a newfound awareness of the other person.

Kian dropped back onto his bed, the one he’d had Sky in briefly.

Too briefly.

He should be here now. With him. Where he belonged. Wasn’t that what good omegas did? Weren’t they meant to live with their alphas?

Kian scowled up at the high ceiling. He’d gone through so much to claim him, only for Sky to lay down all these rules and agreements.

His omega put too much distance between them.

Kian hated it.

The earbud attachment of his multi-slate was out and in his right ear before he realized what he was doing, the sound of the other line ringing, causing the air to catch and burn in his lungs.

What if he didn’t pick up?

What if he ignored him, and he didn’t even want to talk—

“What?” Sky’s harsh tone came through the line and Kian sighed, all the tension uncoiling in a rush unlike anything he’d ever experienced before.

If just the sound of the omega’s voice could do that to him, imagine what actually having Sky here would do. Having him to come home to.

There was a pause, and then Sky asked with uncertainty, “Kian?”

He’d been quiet too long.

“Are you doing homework, little omega?” Kian detached his multi-slate and pulled up the screen that would show him Sky’s location. A tiny glowing green dot flashed on the map, indicating Sky was at the apartment he shared with Elm. “You’re so good for everything else. Why aren’t you good for me?”

“Are you…wasted right now?”

“Probably.” He’d definitely had too much to drink downstairs, but the twins had plied him with alcohol, trying to distract him so they could sneak out to some club party in another part of town.

Kian had played along, but maybe he could have found a better way without actually consuming all of the drinks…

It was fine. Sarang was with Shiloh and Sloane, shadowing them from afar, and the gods knew his underboss would rather cut his own arm off than let anything bad happen to Shiloh.

Again.

The reminder was sobering.

“I never wanted to hurt you, Sky,” Kian admitted. “Even when we were kids. I didn’t know what kindness was. But taking care of you…”

“I know you used to look out for me,” Sky said, but it was impossible to tell what he was feeling based on his tone alone.

Sky Tancredi, it turned out, was a phenomenal pretender.

He even had Kian convinced at times.

“You’re such a little liar, Sky.”

“Where are you?” he asked. “Are you at least somewhere safe?”

“I’m at home,” Kian told him. “Our home.”

Sky was silent for a brief spell, and then his voice was back. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you drunk before.”

“Nope.”

“Do you get drunk often now?”

“Nope.”

“Then why…?”

Kian’s hand settled on his stomach and then drifted lower. “It’s been days, omega. I want to see you.”

“You’ve seen me plenty. Don’t think I didn’t notice those tails you had on me snapping pictures every chance they got.”

Clever little omega. Kian beamed with pride. He’d chosen so well.

“If only you weren’t such a liar, you’d be perfect.” He sighed, hand slipping beneath the waistband of his pants. “Want to play a game? You’ll like it. You’ll get to lie to me some more.”

“What?”

“Don’t worry. You can keep lying to yourself as well. I wouldn’t suggest a game that only one of us got off to.”

“Kian, what the hell?”

“There.” He chuckled. “That’s it. That’s the first lie.”

His fingers wrapped around his cock and he gave himself one firm pump, his hips practically jerking off the mattress as sparks of pleasure radiated through his nerve endings.

If Sky were here, he’d have him spread for him.

Have his cute little tongue all over his dick, taking Kian deep.

He pictured it, what his omega would look like kneeling over him, those pink lips wrapped around his thick length, tears prickling the corners of his green eyes as Kian pumped into him and cut off his oxygen.

“That indignation,” Kian explained, realizing Sky had been waiting for him to. “You acting like you aren’t turned on just by me suggesting it.”

There was more silence, and then a sharp intake. “Alpha, are you…?”

“Have you ever given head, baby?” The thought of someone else’s dick in Sky’s mouth was almost enough to soften him, but Kian squeezed the base of his cock and rode it out.

“Yes.”

There’d been a moment of hesitation before his response.

Kian tilted his head. “A lie, perhaps?”

“Wouldn’t you like to know?” Sky snapped, but he didn’t hang up the device, even knowing that Kian was touching himself right now.

He brought his other hand to his balls, cupping them, and then thrust his hips upward, fucking into his palm. “I bet you’re so wet for me already, aren’t you?”

“No.”

“Lie.”

Sky snorted but didn’t deny it.

“I called it that night four years ago,” Kian chuckled. “You’re such a liar. Do you get off on it?”

“No.”

“Hmm. That time you were telling the truth.”

“How can you tell?” Sky seemed legitimately curious.

Unfortunately, Kian didn’t have an exciting answer for him.

“Don’t know. I just do.” He jerked himself faster. “Keep talking. Let me hear your voice.”

“What do you want me to say?”

“Anything.”

“Careful, alpha. I’m sure there’s plenty you’d rather I not say.”

Kian flipped onto his knees and grabbed one of his pillows, dragging it down as his other hand shoved his pants out of the way. He arranged the pillow between his thighs and then leaned over it, groaning when he humped against the material.

“What are you doing?” Sky asked.

“I’m fucking you.”

“Alpha.”

“I’m rutting a pillow like some horny teenager,” he confessed. “But I’m picturing you. Picturing the way your plump cheeks spread for me. The way my cock looks blowing your hole wide.”

A tiny moan came through the line, and Kian froze, certain he’d misheard. He held his breath, listening as though his life depended on it, and when the sound finally came again, a gush of precome squirted out of his slit to drench the pillow straight through the silk case.

Kian’s gaze snapped to the tiny green dot flashing on his device’s screen.

That dot was touching himself.

To Kian.

For Kian.

Sky had just lost one of their bets.

“Remember when you baked me cookies for my birthday that one year?” Kian started screwing the pillow more vigorously.

“I…Yes?” Sky clearly didn’t know where he was going with this.

“I kept the plate.”

He laughed. “I know.” There was a pause and then, “I wanted you to.”

“You made it.”

“It was the first thing I made in pottery class,” Sky confirmed. “I made it, and I thought of you using it and…I don’t know. This is dumb. Why am I telling you this?”

“Keep telling me things.” He was close. Just from his omega’s husky voice in his ear and the wink-wink of the green dot he knew represented Sky out there in the world.

Kian’s balls tightened and he bit down on his bottom lip, wanting to last just a little bit longer.

Not wanting to lose this strange moment he’d somehow been lucky enough to conjure between them.

“I thought you hated the cookies,” Sky said. “You never brought them up again.”

“I didn’t try them.”

“What? Oh.”

“Don’t be disappointed, little omega.”

“I’m not.”

“Lie.” He grinned at himself, imagining Sky glaring at him through the device.

“It’s not what you think. I wanted to try them, I did, but I couldn’t bring myself to eat them.

Every time I tried, I thought about how they’d be delicious and how I wouldn’t be able to stop and then they’d be gone, and I just couldn’t do it. ”

“That’s…” Sky made a sound akin to a whine, and Kian couldn’t tell if it was because of his confession or if Sky was also getting close to orgasm. “That’s crazy. Cookies are meant to be eaten, not collected.”

“That’s what my mom said.” Or at least she’d said a variation of that. “She threw them out because they got moldy. I didn’t speak to her for a month.”

There was a tiny gasp, and before Kian could wonder if he’d just come, Sky said, “Wait, is that the month you were never home?”

“Yeah. You remember.”

“Duh. Do you have any idea how disappointed I was? I kept coming over hoping to catch a glimpse of you but—Shit!” Sky stopped himself before he could reveal more, no doubt cursing himself in his head for saying all of that.

“Truth.” Kian stared at the little green dot and angled his hips. “I’m going to come, little omega.”

“I am not going to come, because I am a respectable member of society,” Sky quipped, but he didn’t bother trying to hide how each word became a greater struggle for him to say without moaning.

Kian grinned. “Liar.”

The orgasm crashed into him and he roared, white lights flashing and momentarily blinding him as he was hit with an intense wave of euphoria.

He heard the click in his ear indicating Sky had ended the call, but another chuckle rumbled its way out of him as he continued to grind against the soiled pillow, milking his release for all it was worth and enjoying the tingling aftershocks.

Clearly Sky had hung up on him so he wouldn’t hear him reach his own peak.

“Liar.”

After a few more minutes of mindless rutting, Kian’s arms finally gave out and he collapsed. With a satisfied groan, he collected his multi-slate and brought it close to his face, checking to be sure the tiny green dot was still where it was supposed to be.

If he couldn’t have Sky in his bed, at least he could have the omega writhing in his, with Kian invading his mind.

He pressed his lips to the screen and then forced himself to climb off and clean up.

Something told him his omega wouldn’t be pleased if he came home to come stained sheets and pillows.
