Chapter 5 Following Him

Without solid evidence, suspicion grew wildly in my heart.

After a long internal struggle, I finally decided to follow Jiang Yu.

Just like the previous few days, he dressed neatly and coldly threw out, “I won’t be coming back tonight.”

I lowered my head to drink the millet porridge in my bowl and asked as if I didn’t care, “Where are you going?”

He glanced at me expressionlessly and replied indifferently, “I have a project to discuss.”

I suddenly gripped the spoon in my hand tightly.

Heh. What project required him to stay out all night? He was probably going to accompany that woman!

Jiang Yu picked up his car keys, took one long stride, and disappeared out the door in the blink of an eye.

I sat at the dining table for a while. When I heard the sound of the car engine starting, I quickly ran out and flagged down a taxi.

“Master, catch up to that black Bentley in front.”

The taxi driver was a chubby middle-aged man in his forties or fifties.

The moment he heard me, his face filled with gossip. The fat on his cheeks trembled with excitement.

“I understand, I understand! Don’t worry, I definitely won’t lose him.”

The driver didn’t disappoint me. He quickly caught up to Jiang Yu’s car and followed steadily from a distance.

After many twists and turns, the car finally stopped at the most luxurious club in the city center.

Seeing Jiang Yu enter the club, I hurriedly followed.

Before I got out of the taxi, the driver said angrily, “Don’t go easy on them!”

I was still deciding whose face I should slap first.

Jiang Yu went up to the second floor. By the time I chased after him, he had already disappeared.

There were more than ten private rooms. I had no idea which one he had entered.

I was so anxious I ran around like a headless fly.

When I turned around, I crashed straight into a hard chest.

The moment we looked up at each other, both of us froze.

Jiang Yu stayed silent for a moment before speaking first.

“Why are you here?”

I opened my mouth, not knowing how to answer.

I couldn’t possibly say I came to catch him with that woman.

The moment I thought he might really be here to accompany her, I instantly felt full of confidence again.

I put my hands on my hips and fired back.

“Then why are you here?”

Jiang Yu was stunned for a second before he slowly said, “Of course I’m here to discuss a project!”

“Really? Who’s there?”

Jiang Yu clearly caught the meaning behind my words. His face darkened as he pulled open the door of the private room behind me.

Through the gap, I saw a table full of men in suits inside. I even recognized a few of them—they were regular business partners.

All my earlier momentum vanished in an instant.

So he really was here to talk business!

Jiang Yu let out a cold snort.

“See now?”

So what?

I still didn’t believe it.

What kind of business talk lasted all night?

Wouldn’t he just go accompany that woman afterward?

I would come back later then.

“I saw.”

I nodded awkwardly and tried to slip away.

Jiang Yu grabbed me back in one pull.

“Now it’s your turn. What are you doing here?”

His tone carried obvious questioning.

It felt like he wouldn’t let me leave if I couldn’t give him an answer.

My eyes darted around. I didn’t dare meet his gaze.

I felt annoyed at myself for impulsively following him and creating such an awkward situation.

He watched me patiently, waiting for my answer.

“I’m here… I’m here to…”

My brain spun rapidly as I tried to think of an excuse.

Suddenly, a flash of inspiration hit me.

“I’m here for a Class Reunion!”

Jiang Yu’s grip on my hand tightened abruptly.

“Class Reunion?”

“Yeah, it happens to be on the second floor too.”

Jiang Yu’s expression suddenly became strange. He asked urgently, “High school or university classmates?”

“University classmates.”

“Who’s there?”

Now it was my turn to darken my face. Who else would be at a class reunion?

I looked at him like he was an idiot.

“You don’t know my classmates anyway.”

Jiang Yu stared at me motionlessly. Broken starlight flickered in his dark eyes.

I felt flustered under his stare, thinking he suspected I was lying.

“It really is a Class Reunion. It’s in room 216.”

After a long time, Jiang Yu finally gave a soft “Mm.”

Then he lowered his eyes and asked in a muffled voice, “Will you come home tonight?”

“Of course.”

Seeing that he was still looking at me, I had no choice but to walk to the door of room 216.

To prove I was telling the truth, under Jiang Yu’s watchful gaze, I braced myself and pushed open the door of the private room.

The lively room instantly fell silent the moment the door opened.

Everyone turned to look at me.

Class president Lin Qian quickly came over in surprise and pulled me in.

“Ji Nuan, didn’t you say you weren’t coming?”

My face reddened. I felt a little embarrassed.

“I suddenly changed my mind. It’s been so long since we last saw each other.”

Lin Qian smiled and said, “That’s wonderful. Your presence is such a nice surprise. Come on over. Everyone has been missing you.”

The classmates I used to be close with all gathered around, their faces full of joy at our reunion.

“Ji Nuan, long time no see! We’ve missed you so much.”

“How have you been lately?”

Everyone spoke at once, and the room quickly became lively again.

I sat to the side, quietly listening as they enthusiastically shared their lives and work.

Lin Qian leaned over curiously and asked, “By the way, did you know He Yanzhou has returned to the country?”

I froze for a moment, then shook my head.

He Yanzhou was my boyfriend back in university.

Lin Qian was one of the few people who knew about our relationship.

We had once loved each other with pure passion.

But that was all in the past now.

His family business had fallen into a slump. For the sake of the family, he followed their arrangement and went overseas to develop the market.

At the time, he had said to me, “Ji Nuan, five years. Can you wait for me for five years?”

Five years held too many variables.

I didn’t want to gamble, and I didn’t want to waste my youth waiting.

In the end, I chose to end things with him.

We didn’t make it ugly. The breakup was clean and dignified.

He didn’t try to hold me back, and I wouldn’t look back.

I understood his helplessness. After all, he carried the heavy responsibility of his family.

After that, I blocked and deleted all his contact information. We completely lost touch.

Lin Qian sighed with regret, “He came to me before to ask about you. He probably wanted to rekindle things, but I told him you were already married.

“I invited him to the class reunion too, but he’s so busy. He definitely won’t come.”

The moment her words fell, the door of the private room was opened once again.
