Chapter 44
CHAPTER 44
M y Hero
Cameron
I pull a hand down my face as I step out of the hospital. Kay and the baby are being monitored and Jareil’s condition has been updated to stable. I was able to talk to him for a bit.
He risked his life to keep Kay and Amina safe. He could have given Amina up, but he didn’t reveal what he suspected. JR earned my respect for that.
All the rest of the shit going on between us, we’ll have a talk about when he gets out of this place. I honestly don’t give a shit. I pull my phone from my pocket with a smile on my face as I dial the number of the only person I want to talk to.
“Hello,” she yawns into the phone.
“It’s over. You can come home,” I breathe.
“What? Are you serious?”
“Yeah, baby. I am. Dez finally fucked up and my guys were on his ass. He’s behind bars as we speak.”
“Cam,” she sobs. “We can come to you?”
“I’ll be looking for a place for us first thing in the morning. If you can’t come to me, I’m coming to you.”
“This is finally over? I can’t believe it.”
“Believe it, baby. We finally get to be together.”
“Where are you? What are those sirens in the background?”
I turn to look behind me. An ambulance has just pulled up. It reminds me that I need a ride back to the house since I came in an ambulance with Kay.
“I’m at the hospital. Kay had a scare with Bug and the father of her baby is here because of Dez. They’re going to be able to hold him for attempted murder at the least,” I reply.
“Oh my God, you’re kidding, right?”
“No, I’m not. I’m going to talk to the detectives in the morning.”
“Is the father okay?”
“Yeah, he’s going to survive.”
“What about the baby?”
“Kay and the baby are fine. They are holding her for observation.”
“It’s over. It’s really over,” she sobs.
“Yeah, baby. It’s all taken care of. I’m filing for that divorce as soon as my lawyer draws up the papers.”
She laughs through her sobs. “Really, Cam? Let the girl and her baby daddy get out of the hospital first.”
“Yeah, whatever. Go back to sleep. You’re going to need your rest. I love you.”
“Love you too. Thanks, Cam. Thank you for everything.”
Maribel
I hang up the phone and stare up at the ceiling as I hold my hand over my belly. The babies are moving as if they too woke to talk to their father. I can’t put into words how relieved I feel.
I’m almost scared to believe it’s true. This nightmare is finally over. I can be with the man I love and not have to look over my shoulder.
“You’re going to love your daddy,” I say to my children as they move around.
I dry my tears, and a huge smile comes to my face. With each second, it begins to sink in deeper. For the first time in about five years, I can breathe easy.
“I’m finally free. Your daddy is my hero.”
