Chapter 13
CHELSEA
He kissed me once and then stopped.
That was the thing I kept returning to. Not the kiss itself—though the kiss itself was doing things to my nervous system that I was going to need some time with. The stopping. The deliberate, unhurried way he'd sat back and looked at me, and the quality of what was in his face when he did.
Not retreat. Not apology. Not the careful recalibration of a man who'd overstepped and was managing the consequences.
Something else. Something that looked, if I was being honest with myself in the dark at midnight, like a man who had just understood something he hadn't understood before and was sitting with the weight of it.
I took off the coat. Hung it up. Stood in the green dress in the kitchen and looked at the anemones and thought about recognition.
About the difference between being wanted and being seen.
About the fact that in twenty-seven years, in every room I'd moved through with such fluency, no one had ever kissed me like that—like I was something they'd been looking for without knowing they were looking, and had just found.
I changed out of the dress carefully. Hung it up. Pressed my palm flat against the silk for a moment before I let it go.
Then I went to bed and lay in the dark and felt, for the first time in as long as I could remember, genuinely awake.
He texted at eight the next morning.
How did you sleep?
I looked at this for a moment, still horizontal, grey light at the curtains.
Better than I have in weeks. You?
Three dots. Gone. Then:
Same. There's a market near the Bastille. Come with me.
Not would you like to or if you're free. Come with me. The same directness he applied to everything—not rudeness, the absence of hedging. A man who said what he meant and trusted you to say what you meant back.
Give me an hour, I sent.
I'll be outside in forty-five minutes.
I put the phone down and lay there for exactly thirty seconds allowing myself to feel what I was feeling, which was considerable, and then I got up and had a shower and stood in front of the wardrobe making decisions.
The Marché d'Aligre was everything the eighth arrondissement was not—loud, layered.
Stalls pressing against each other under the covered hall, vendors calling out in French and Arabic and several other languages I couldn't place, the smell of ripe fruit and fish and coffee and the warm-bread smell that Paris deployed everywhere as if by municipal requirement.
Rem moved through it like he'd been here before.
Maybe he had. He navigated by instinct—not the hesitant navigation of a tourist consulting a phone, but the absorbed attention of someone interested in the thing itself rather than its coordinates.
He stopped at a cheese stall and had a conversation in French I couldn't entirely follow, tasted three things on small pieces of paper, bought two wedges wrapped in wax. Moved on.
I followed.
Watching him here was different from watching him on the Faubourg.
There, he'd moved with the ease of someone in a natural habitat—quality as a first language, the grammar effortless.
Here was something else. He was genuinely curious.
He crouched to look at vegetables with the same attention he'd given the dress.
He asked questions. He listened to the answers.
"You actually like this," I said, catching up at a stall of preserved things—oils, vinegars, jams in handwritten jars.
"Markets?" He picked up a jar. Turned it. Set it down. "My mother used to take me. The one near our house in Connecticut—nothing like this, but the same idea. She said if you wanted to understand a place, you went to where the people fed themselves."
"Smart woman."
"Yes." He said it simply, without the complicated undercurrent that the word mother produced in some men. Not uncomplicated—I suspected there was plenty underneath—but the word itself was clean. Love without ambivalence in the saying of it.
He bought the jar. Also a small bottle of walnut oil and a bunch of things I didn't recognise that turned out, when I asked, to be a variety of thyme specific to the region that the vendor had grown herself and was selling at a price that suggested she knew exactly what she had.
We emerged from the covered hall into the open-air section, which was quieter and stranger—clothes and books and objects of indeterminate history spread on tables and blankets, the archaeology of other people's lives.
He found a record. Pulled it from a crate with the instinct of someone who knew what they were looking for, even here.
"Do you play?" I said.
"No. I listen." He turned the record over. Something instrumental, French, from the sixties by the look of the cover. "My father's record collection. I spent a lot of time with it growing up."
"What was he like?"
He was quiet for a moment. Turning the record in his hands.
"I don't have enough of him to answer that properly.
He died when I was young." A pause. "What I have are impressions.
A voice. Hands. The feeling of a room." He set the record back in the crate, then picked it up again, which was its own answer.
"He loved music the way some people love religion.
Like it was a place you went to be honest."
"Is that where you got it?"
"Apparently." He bought the record. "What did you get from your parents? Before."
Before. The word carried the weight of what it meant without making it heavy.
"My mother's laugh," I said. "The way she found things funny that weren't supposed to be.
My father's stubbornness, which Robert tells me regularly.
" I paused. "Neither of them were precious about things.
They had nice things—we weren't without money—but they used them.
The good china on regular days. Books everywhere.
Coats left on the floor." I stopped. "The house felt lived in, in a way that Robert's never has. "
He was watching me. Present.
"That's what you're looking for," he said. "In Paris."
It wasn't a question, but I answered it. "I think so. Something that feels used. Mine."
He nodded slowly. Then he reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear—not as a prelude to anything, not with any particular intent. Just because it was there and he wanted to, and he'd stopped asking himself permission for small true things.
My heart did something unreasonable.
We bought bread from a boulangerie on the way back to the car—he'd brought a Peugeot, which startled me when I remembered Thomas and the keys I'd barely touched. Rem’s was a different car, considerably less modest, which he'd arranged without explanation and driven with the comfortable authority of someone for whom cars were tools rather than statements.
He drove the way he did everything. No performance. Just competence.
Back at the apartment—mine, the eighth, Robert's impersonal splendour—he came upstairs without being asked, which should have felt like a presumption and felt instead like the continuation of something that had started the night before and didn't have a natural stopping point yet.
He stood in the kitchen looking at the anemones on the windowsill.
"You kept them," he said.
"They're thriving," I said. "As promised."
He set the market things on the counter and looked at the kitchen—the unmarked surfaces, the unused cooker, the entire beautiful indifference of a room that had never had a meal made in it.
"Can I cook?" he said.
I looked at him. "You cook."
"One of the things I do well." A pause. "Possibly the only non-violent one."
I absorbed this. Filed the non-violent for later. "The kitchen has never been used."
"Good." He was already opening cupboards with the focused reconnaissance of a man assessing a new environment. "Clean start."
What followed was an hour I hadn't anticipated and couldn't quite categorise.
He cooked—seriously, without theatrics, with the same attention he gave everything.
The cheese. The thyme. Eggs from somewhere he found in the back of the fridge that had been left by whoever maintained the apartment.
Bread from the market. He made something simple that shouldn't have been extraordinary and was, and I sat on the counter watching him and felt the apartment change around me.
Not the apartment. Me. The way I was in it.
He handed me things to do—peel this, cut this, here—with the naturalness of someone who cooked with other people rather than for them. I was not a cook. I did what I was told and did it badly and he corrected me twice without making it a lesson.
We ate standing up at the counter, which felt right.
"My father used to cook like this," I said, watching him clean up with the efficiency of someone who understood that the cleaning was part of it. "Like the food was worth paying attention to."
He looked at me across the counter. "You remember more than you think."
"I remember everything," I said. "I just don't always let myself."
He came around the counter.
He didn't hurry. Didn't make it a moment. Just moved through the kitchen toward me and stopped when he was close—not touching, just close, the way he'd been in the lift the night before, all that charged space between us doing what charged space did.
"Chelsea," he said.
"Yes."
He took my face in both hands, the way you held something you wanted to look at properly. His thumbs rested against my cheekbones and his fingers were in my hair and he looked at me for a moment with the full, unmanaged attention that had been undoing me since the flower shop.
Then he kissed me.
Not the soft brief thing from the concert hall.
This was different—longer, fuller, a kiss that knew what it was doing and wasn't apologising for it.
His mouth was warm and certain. I felt the certainty move through me from the point of contact outward, reaching places that had been very still for a very long time.
I kissed him back.
Not competently. Not with the managed responsiveness I'd described to Dr. Devereaux in that chair. With actual want—the ungoverned kind that had been building since the moment our hands touched over a bucket of anemones and I'd looked up and found those dark eyes.
His hands moved from my face into my hair and mine went to his chest—the warmth of him underneath.
For a moment, we stood in the kitchen of Robert's impersonal apartment with the anemones on the windowsill and the market things on the counter and the morning light doing the thing Paris light did, leaning rather than falling, and it was—
Real.
That was the word. Not fine, not pleasant, not competent. Real.
The floor felt different under me, the room felt different around me, and I understood—in the way you understood things that arrived in the body before the mind—that this was what had been missing.
Not the kissing. Not the man. The realness.
The thing that happened when you let something simply be what it was.
He pulled back. Not far—forehead against mine, breath unsteady, hands still in my hair.
"Chelsea," he said again. Lower this time.
"Don't apologise," I said.
A breath. Almost a laugh. "I wasn't going to."
"Good."
We stayed like that. His forehead against mine, both of us breathing, the kitchen quiet around us.
Below, Paris moved through its morning. A car.
A voice. The city not noticing, not adjusting, not caring in the least that something had just rearranged itself two floors up in an apartment on a quiet street in the eighth.
"I should tell you something," he said.
"All right."
"I'm not—" He paused. The pause of someone choosing words not for effect but for accuracy. "I'm not in Paris for simple reasons. There are things I can't tell you yet. Not because I don't want to. Because it's not safe and it's not only mine to tell."
I considered this. The deliberate vagueness. The pen he carried. The seat against the wall in every room. The peripheral awareness I'd noticed and filed and hadn't examined.
"Are you in danger?" I said.
"Possibly." He said it plainly. No drama. "The kind I'm used to handling."
"And me?"
His hands tightened in my hair—fractionally, involuntarily. "Not because of me. Not if I can help it."
I thought about this for a moment. About the shape of it. A man who kept his back to walls and his eyes on doors and had nightmares about something that happened when he was sixteen. Who cooked and bought records and kissed me like I was something he'd been looking for.
"All right," I said.
He pulled back enough to look at me. "All right?"
"I'm not asking you for things you can't give me yet." I met his eyes. "I'm just asking you not to disappear."
Something moved across his face. The thing that happened when a true thing landed somewhere that needed it.
"I'm not going anywhere," he said.
I believed him.
Not naively—I had enough self-awareness left to know that believing someone on the evidence of a kiss and a cooked breakfast was not a position that would survive Dr. Devereaux's scrutiny. But underneath the self-awareness, somewhere more structural, I believed him.
He straightened. Ran a hand through his hair. The gesture of a man pulling himself back from an edge he'd been standing on willingly.
"I have somewhere to be," he said. "This afternoon."
"The Sanctuary," I said, without thinking.
He went very still.
I hadn't planned to say it. It had arrived half-heard in a text I'd glimpsed when his phone lit up on the restaurant table.
"Where did you hear that?" he said. Quiet. Level.
"I didn't hear it anywhere. I noticed it." I held his gaze. "I notice things. It's what I do." A pause. "I won't ask."
He looked at me for a long moment. Reading, the way I read—not appraising, understanding.
"Thank you," he said.
He picked up his jacket. The record from the market. Paused at the door.
"Tonight?" he said.
"Yes," I said, which was becoming, I noticed, my default answer to that question when it came from him.
He left. The door closed softly. I stood in the kitchen in the morning light and pressed two fingers to my mouth.
Real, I thought again.
Whatever this was—whatever it was becoming, at whatever speed it was moving, with whatever complications waited in the shape of things he couldn't tell me yet—it was the most real thing I'd felt in years.
I picked up my phone.
Typed a message to Dr. Devereaux.
I called him, I wrote. You were right.
Set the phone down. Looked at the anemones.
They really were thriving.
