Interstitial
Int. James’s Apartment (Cont’d)
Annie nudges James’s foot under the table.
JAMES
What are you suggesting?
ANNIE
I could go with you to the party if
you’re nervous. I know it’s hard to
get back into a rhythm after...
after you’ve been absent from
something for so long.
JAMES
That’s kind of you, but that’s okay.
You don’t have to do that for me.
ANNIE
It’s really not a big deal. I don’t
have anything else to do. And, as
a lawyer, I’ve gone to a lot of
different Christmas functions.
I’m practically a Christmas expert.
JAMES
This is true.
ANNIE
Having a lawyer with you might
be helpful. I could help you navigate
any situations that arise with the
Small Business Association. It would be
good for you to have some legal counsel in
case they try to pull something on you.
JAMES
That does sound helpful.
ANNIE
Plus, it would be fun. I’ve been cooped
up washing diapers and bottles for a few
days. It would be nice to get dressed up
and see a bit more of everything Hemlock
Grove has to offer.
JAMES
I’m sorry. I don’t think I have it in me.
ANNIE
At least make an appearance so you can
say you tried.
JAMES
(hesitant)
I guess I could go for a few minutes.
ANNIE
That’s the spirit.
JAMES
But I’m not dancing.
ANNIE
Never said you had to. Honestly, I’m mostly in it for the Christmas buffet. They always have the best food at these things.
JAMES
Maybe we should bring to-go containers
and take some food home.
ANNIE
Now you’re talking!
Annie and James share a smile, their legs bump under the table.
JAMES
Thank you for going with me to the party.
For helping me decorate. For making cookies
with me. For being so kind—especially
after I’ve been so rude to you.
ANNIE
Of course. That’s what friends are for.
JAMES
Friends?
