Int. Jenna’s Apartment - Night
Annie enters Jenna’s dark apartment, closes the door and leans against it. Lights turn on, surprising her.
JENNA
There she is. Were you over at that
guy’s place across the hall again?
ANNIE
Maybe.
JENNA
Oh, come on, I haven’t had time for real
romance in months. It’s hard to sneak away
when you smell like sour milk, and Henry
seems to know exactly the wrong time to cry.
Let me live vicariously through you!
ANNIE
There’s nothing to tell.
We’re friends.
JENNA
Uh-huh. Friends don’t make you
blush like that.
Annie brings her hands up to pink cheeks.
ANNIE
Stop! Anyway, I’m going to a big
Christmas party on Saturday with him—
Jenna gives Annie a look.
ANNIE (CONT’D)
As a friend .
JENNA
Uh-huh. Sure.
ANNIE
Do you have anything I can wear?
I didn’t bring any dresses. I
thought we’d be having a sweatpants
marathon this whole week.
JENNA
Do I have dresses? Come on. I may be
a mom, but I’m not dead.
Int. Brewed Awakening Café - Morning
Annie enters and stands in line to wait with three other customers.
James sees her immediately and smiles. His demeanour with his guests has improved, he even says “Good Morning” to them.
Annie steps up when it’s her turn.
ANNIE
Good morning! Two lattes please, sir.
JAMES
Why yes, miss, coming right up.
Annie glances at the display case, noting some new treats.
ANNIE
Our Christmas cookies! You’re selling them!
JAMES
They’re a huge hit. I may have to make more
for us to take to the party on Saturday.
ANNIE
Let me know if you need any help with that.
JAMES
I will. Here are your drinks—
Annie removes her wallet from her purse.
James raises his hand to stop her, then gestures to the display case of cookies.
JAMES (CONT’D)
You’ve already paid me in hours
of service.
ANNIE
Thank you, that is very kind. Can
I have a couple of cookies, too?
James gives her the cookies in a paper bag.
Annie sneaks a $20 bill into the tip jar.
James eyes Annie with teasing reproach.
Annie sniffs her drink, then tastes it.
ANNIE
Is this pumpkin spice?
JAMES
Yes. But don’t tell anyone. I have a
reputation to uphold.
ANNIE
Just for me?
JAMES
(smiling)
Just for you.
