The dog barked first.

Not mine—I didn’t have one. It was the island’s half-wild mutt, wiry and burr-ridden, who treated the harbor like her own personal checkpoint. Any boat that didn’t belong got a warning. I looked up from my weather log, pencil paused mid-scratch.
