Chapter 68
SIXTY-EIGHT
Maya walked back from her shift at the café, her legs almost as heavy as her heart. She couldn’t believe that since the last magical time with the professor, he had not once spoken to her. He had even dumped one of her calls. He never dumped her calls. Men! Why, when they suddenly got close, did they have to pull away again?
If the professor was going to be like this, she might as well carry on seeing her clients – at least she was then earning decent money enough to save.
She was putting her key in the door when she heard her phone ringing in her bag. On seeing who it was, she felt a rush of relief flood through her.
‘Little bird, it’s me. Sorry I’ve not been in touch. We need to talk. Are you around later?’
Maya’s relief turned to alarm. Needing to talk? That sounded serious. Hopefully serious in a good way. Maybe he was going to discuss moving in with her or how best they could carry on while he was still married? She wasn’t stupid, although the other night had been just so lovely, the reality was that he still lived with his wife and daughter, so she didn’t expect things to move forward that fast.
Truthfully, part of her was a little scared about being in a full-time relationship with just one person. But the thought of being financially stable was all that she had ever wanted and the chance to have this with somebody she did actually love was like a dream coming true.
‘What time? At my place?’ Maya replied casually.
Say seven? I’ll come to you and we can walk somewhere from yours.’
Maya kept her voice as upbeat as she could. ‘Sure. See you then.’
Walk and talk? Maya thought. How things had changed.
