Chapter 26
Eden’s instincts were on high alert as she moved through Alexander’s gathering, each step bringing her closer to either victory or disaster.
The penthouse ballroom showcased pure wealth and power—crystal chandeliers illuminating polished marble floors where government ministers and corporate leaders mingled. Everyone positioned strategically, their casual stances hiding constant vigilance. At the center stood Alexander Mitchell, commanding attention like royalty.
“Alexander’s gathered quite the crowd,”
Hunter whispered as they danced, his hand warm against her bare back. Despite his combat background, he moved gracefully, each step maintaining perfect positioning while appearing completely natural.
Eden felt his controlled tension—the alertness in his shoulders as he monitored the room, the pressure of his hand at her waist. Yet his eyes still held warmth when they met hers, making her heart beat faster despite the danger surrounding them.
“I count at least thirty private security contractors,” he added.
“Forty-three,”
she corrected, letting him spin her to survey the room.
“Plus, whatever others he’s hidden. Alexander never takes chances.”
“Speaking of chances.”
His hand tightened slightly as they passed one of the display cases.
“You feel that? The devices are responding—the signal gets stronger when you or Katherine approaches.”
Eden had noticed it too—the technology responding to their proximity.
“The sensors are definitely reading our DNA.”
“Which makes our plan even more dangerous.”
Hunter pulled her closer than the dance required, his eyes darkening with concern.
“Are you sure about this?”
Eden met his gaze, letting him see her true feelings.
“About using technology we barely understand? Not even slightly.”
Her smile matched his intensity.
“About trusting you when everything falls apart? Absolutely.”
He kissed her, brief but fierce. The public display served their cover but communicated something much deeper—trust. Where Eden had once used physical contact purely for tactical advantage, with Hunter it had become something that strengthened rather than compromised her.
When they separated, their shared look conveyed everything words couldn’t.
Eden found herself noticing details she’d never prioritized before—his stubble against her skin, the strength in his hand at her waist, the way his eyes darkened when looking at her. It had nothing to do with tactics, yet somehow made her more aware of everything.
“Alexander’s watching,”
Hunter said, his voice rougher than usual.
“Good.”
Eden rested her hand on his chest, feeling his heartbeat.
“Let him see exactly what he thinks he’s about to control—a Mitchell heir in love with an outlaw, embracing her supposed destiny.”
The word “love”
slipped out naturally, and she didn’t correct it, though her heart beat faster, wondering if he’d caught the slip. If he had, he didn’t show it, but the truth of it settled in her chest, surprising yet inevitable, and it shocked her how much she truly meant it. How good it had felt to say it. To allow herself to feel it…
“And what destiny does he imagine for you?”
“To reshape the world in his image,”
Katherine replied through their comms.
“Using Eden’s genetic compatibility to manipulate global systems.”
Eden spotted Katherine moving through the crowd with composed efficiency, every conversation advancing their goal. She played her role perfectly, convincing Alexander they’d embraced his vision.
“Minister Li has arrived,”
Katherine reported.
“Along with representatives from major financial institutions. Alexander’s moving everything into position.”
“And our pieces?”
Hunter turned Eden again, allowing her to scan the room.
“Darkness’s people are in place,”
Eden confirmed.
“Amazing how many service staff positions opened up exactly when we needed them.”
“Good planning? Or Mitchell technology?”
Hunter’s smile was dangerous.
“Both,”
she replied.
“Sarah’s files showed the systems work best when aligned with specific intentions.”
“And what do you truly want?”
Alexander appeared beside them, radiating controlled power.
“Besides dancing with your outlaw companion?”
Eden met her grandfather’s eyes steadily, showing him what he expected—ambition and hunger for power.
“The same thing you want. To change the world according to our vision.”
“Good answer.”
His smile was predatory.
“Though not entirely truthful. You want justice too, don’t you? Just like your mother.”
“Justice is relative.”
Eden felt Katherine approaching.
“Power is what matters.”
His eyes were calculating, a stare that attempted to bore into her very soul. She stood firm until a glimmer of pleasure softened them.
“Very good.”
Alexander’s approval made her skin crawl.
“You’ve learned well these past weeks. Are you ready to show our guests exactly what your implacable DNA can accomplish?”
Eden exchanged a look with Katherine.
“Born ready.”
Alexander laughed genuinely as he moved to the center of the room.
“Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention? Tonight’s demonstration is about to begin.”
The crowd formed a circle around the displayed artifacts. Eden felt the systems activating, aligning with their presence.
“For generations,”
Alexander announced, “certain families have guided world events from the shadowy recesses of society. Tonight, you’ll see exactly how—through genetic compatibility with advanced technology.”
He gestured proudly toward Eden.
“My granddaughter carries that genetic legacy—markers that have built and destroyed empires. That make my family’s DNA uniquely valuable.”
Eden felt Hunter tense beside her as Alexander approached a display case. Inside, ancient-looking tablets activated with blue light.
“These technological interfaces,”
Alexander explained, “respond only to specific genetic markers. They contain sensors programmed to recognize certain DNA sequences. Eden? Katherine? If you would?”
They took positions on either side of the display. Eden felt the systems activating, responding to their presence.
“Together,”
Alexander commanded.
“Focus your intentions. Feel your connection to these devices.”
Eden touched the computer panel simultaneously with Katherine. Immediately, the systems activated and synchronized. The feedback was unlike anything she’d experienced before—the technology responding to their DNA and creating a direct neural connection.
Through it, she perceived multiple possibilities, variables, and outcomes.
Showtime.
“Yes!”
Alexander exclaimed triumphantly, already drunk with perceived power.
“Now you understand. This is true power!”
Eden met Katherine’s eyes through the connection, sharing the same intention. Together, they redirected the systems away from Alexander’s purpose.
Instead of reinforcing his empire, they reconfigured the interface to reveal truth. The display shifted, showing something entirely different.
The crowd gasped as hidden information became visible around the room—every crime, manipulation, and evidence of the secret deal that had built Alexander’s empire appeared in detail.
“What are you doing?”
Alexander’s voice held genuine fear.
“This isn’t what we practiced!”
“No,”
Eden replied firmly.
“This is what Sarah died trying to expose—how you’ve been manipulating global systems.”
Through their connection, she felt Katherine adding more evidence to the display. Images shifted to show specific crimes—murders ordered, governments manipulated, lives destroyed.
“Stop this!”
Alexander lunged for the devices, eyes wild with panic as he tried desperately to interrupt them.
“You have no idea what you’re doing. This technology was meant to build empires, not expose them!”
“Wrong,”
Katherine countered.
“These systems were originally programmed to identify corruption and reveal hidden data. The programs were designed to enhance transparency, not enable manipulation. Sarah discovered the original parameters. That’s why you eliminated her.”
Eden sensed Hunter intercepting security teams while Darkness and the rest of the club members in attendance secured exits. But her focus remained on the truth flowing through the systems, revealing Alexander’s empire in ways he never imagined.
“Sarah knew.”
Eden met Alexander’s desperate eyes.
“She found the truth about these devices, about what they were really designed for. Our DNA wasn’t meant to build shadows—it was meant to expose them.”
The system completed its final sequence. Everything was revealed. Every crime. Every conspiracy. Every manipulation that had built Alexander’s empire. And every piece of evidence needed to destroy it completely.
“It’s over,”
Eden said as Hunter moved protectively to her side.
“Everything you built, every secret you’ve hidden—it’s all exposed.”
“You’ve destroyed everything,”
Alexander’s voice cracked as federal agents burst through the doors, causing attendees to gasp and whisper as they moved in on her grandfather.
“Generations of power, of carefully built influence...”
“No.”
Katherine smiled coldly as agents took Alexander into custody, the cold metal cuffs they placed around his thin wrists clicking into place almost obscenely in the stunned silence of the room.
“We’ve restored what should have been. Used the technology as it was meant to be used.”
The devices powered down. Eden felt different now—understanding the technology not as a tool for manipulation but as a means of revealing truth.
Hunter’s hand was warm on her back as they watched agents leading away Alexander’s associates.
“That was impressive.”
Eden leaned into his touch.
“Turns out our DNA was never meant to build empires.”
Katherine nodded.
“It was meant to reveal truth and restore balance.”
“What happens to the devices now?”
Hunter asked.
Eden exchanged a look with Katherine.
“They belong in museums where they can be properly studied, not hidden away as tools for manipulation.”
As the agents with questions moved in, they broke away, allowing Katherine to take lead on the interviews.
Under the protective shelter of Hunter’s arm, Eden allowed herself to be guided toward the exit. She needed fresh air to clear her mind after tonight’s crazy events.
“And us?”
Hunter’s soft question grabbed her attention, and his tone carried deeper meaning that she couldn’t miss.
Just a few steps from the exit, Eden turned in his arms, facing the future beyond this mission. For years, she’d avoided personal connections, seeing them as vulnerabilities. But with Hunter, that connection had become her greatest strength.
She looked up at him, letting him see both the tactical operator and the woman beneath—the one who had finally found something worth fighting for beyond revenge.
“Well, someone needs to make sure other organizations don’t fill the vacuum Alexander left,”
she said, her eyes conveying both professional assessment and personal invitation.
“Seems like the kind of long-term project that needs your particular skills.”
“Hunting corruption and exposing secrets?”
Hunter’s smile made her heart race.
“Sounds like my kind of mission.”
“With assistance from the Blind Jacks?”
Katherine asked with a knowing smile as she approached.
“Always,”
Eden replied, her focus wholly on the man in front of her.
“After all, the best partnerships are built on trust and truth.”
With a sly smile, she pulled Hunter down for a kiss that left no doubt about her intentions.
“And we’re just getting started,”
Katherine added as she walked away to begin coordinating with the federal teams.
As dawn broke over Moscow as they began dismantling Alexander’s empire. The world had changed overnight—secrets exposed, truth revealed, justice served.
But amid all the changes, Eden found herself centered by Hunter’s constant presence beside her. His hand found hers as they watched the sunrise, fingers intertwining with comfortable familiarity.
For the first time since her mother’s death, Eden was fighting for more than truth, for more than justice. She was fighting for the future she could now imagine with the man who had broken through all her carefully constructed barriers.
The mission was over, but their work was just beginning. Together with Katherine and the Blind Jacks, they would continue what Sarah Mitchell had started—exposing corruption and bringing balance to a shadowed world.
Eden smiled as Hunter pulled her closer, his arms around her waist as they faced the new day together. In his embrace, she found not just a tactical partner but something she’d never expected to find in this dangerous life—a home.
The sun rose over Moscow, golden light chasing away the last shadows of night. Ahead lay new challenges, but for the first time in her life, Eden faced them with hope rather than vengeance in her heart.
And that, perhaps, was the greatest victory of all.
