Chapter 38

Lennox

The very last thing I expected during our bye week was to find my phone ringing off the hook. All my teammates were off relaxing, and Evan was in Sacramento until we had to report back. Dane was busy being a badass this morning, so it only left my agent or Camile.

Or maybe Carson calling from jail because he offed his new buddy.

That thought made me laugh as I washed the shampoo away. Whoever it was would have to wait until I conditioned my hair. Dane loved to run his fingers through it, so I needed it soft.

When it stopped, then immediately started ringing again, unease began to settle in. The only time phones stopped ringing only to start again in movies meant something was wrong.

Rinsing quickly, I stepped out of the shower and over to the vanity. Camile’s name was on the screen. Before I could pick it up, it stopped ringing, then started again.

Swiping the screen, I hit the speakerphone. “Hey, Camile what?—”

“Where the fuck are you? I’ve been calling you non-stop.” She paused, and then a sob ripped from her. I was going to be sick.

“I’m here. I was in the shower. What’s wrong? Is Daniel okay?”

She sucked in a breath, then answered. “Yes. He’s fine. It’s Dane. They went down over the water.”

My heart tried to pound its way out of my chest. She couldn’t be right. There was no way. “What? What are talking about?”

Plane. Down over water. No. “Is he…”

I lost all control as pain blazed from my chest and took me to my knees. Unmeasurable grief tore me in half.

“Lennox,” she yelled, bringing me back. “He’s alive. They ejected. They’re both at the hospital, but we’ve got to get there. I’m on my way to get you.”

I got to my feet as my brain slowly came back online. There were so many questions I should be asking, but I was frozen.

”Yeah. Uh, what do I…” I couldn’t finish a thought.

“Just be dressed and ready to go. I called a friend to fly us up in his plane. I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

I nodded, even though she had ended the call.

“He’s alive. He’s alive. He’s alive,” I said aloud, bringing myself back to life.

Rushing around my bathroom, I dried off and dressed in jeans and a T-shirt as quickly as possible. I grabbed my phone and wallet, tucking them both in my back pocket.

As I made my way out the front door, her car pulled up to my house. I jogged out and got in the passenger seat.

Camile looked over at me with red eyes, then motioned for me to put on my seatbelt. When I was buckled, she took off out of my neighborhood.

“What happened? Do you know?”

She glanced at me as she drove. “No, when I got the call, it was the last thing I expected. He’s one of the best.”

The call. Had I missed it? When I looked at the log of calls, they were only from her.

“They didn’t call me.”

She glanced at me warily. “I know. I’m his emergency contact.”

Camile paused, then spoke softly. “It’s because of Daniel.”

I looked over at her. “You should be, Camile. He’s his father.”

She reached over and took my hand. “It’s gonna be okay.”

I kept telling myself that entire flight to Lemoore. I’d managed to hold myself together until we got there and I saw him battered and bruised, and I fucking lost it.

My hand went to cover my mouth to keep me from sobbing. A heart monitor beeped away as multiple bags of IV fluids were being pumped into him.

I looked over at Camile as she held back tears. She loved him too, and I was grateful she was in our corner.

“Go sit with him, and I’ll go call his parents.”

I nodded as she walked out, then went to sit beside him.

Taking his hand in mine, I kissed the top and let the tears come. I sat and stared at him.

When he stirred, I stood and kissed his lips.

“Baby, I’m here. Dane, can you hear me?”
