Chapter 11 The Confrontation

Earlier this year, I went to pay respects and brought plenty of gifts.

“Second Uncle and Second Aunt are newly married. As your nephew I didn’t have the chance to offer congratulations earlier, so I came specially today to pay my respects.”

Pei Du happened to be out. I invited the guest in and ordered tea and pastries to be served.

I felt a strong gaze on me and looked up.

Pei Zhao was staring straight at me.

I asked in confusion, “Is there something on my face?”

He withdrew his gaze, his tone carrying obvious sarcasm.

“When I was in Jiangnan and heard that Second Uncle was getting married, I wondered what kind of woman had caught his eye. Now that I’ve seen her, I understand—Second Uncle has sharp taste.”

I frowned.

His words sounded strange no matter how I turned them over.

“I heard Second Aunt is also from Jianghuai?”

I nodded.

“What a coincidence. I know someone from the same place, also surnamed Wen.”

“Oh.”

I responded flatly, “That really is quite the coincidence.”

What exactly was Pei Zhao trying to say? Why did everything he said feel so off?

“Does Second Aunt have nothing to say to me?”

He stared at me intently, looking as though I had wronged him deeply.

I was completely baffled and could only reply, “There are quite a few people surnamed Wen in my area. If you’re looking for someone, I can help you ask around.”

Pei Zhao gave a cold laugh and said nothing more.

He soon set down his teacup and left.

I didn’t take it to heart.

But not long after, a servant rushed in breathlessly to report that Pei Zhao and Pei Du were arguing.

“Second Master returned from duty today and was stopped by Second Young Master right at the mansion gate. Second Young Master seemed very angry and wanted to speak with him. Second Master brought him into the study, but the two of them look ready to quarrel again. Second Young Master even seemed about to raise a hand.”

I hurried over at once.

When I pushed open the study door, I heard Pei Zhao’s furious shout.

“Second Uncle! How could you impersonate me and marry my fiancée?”
