Chapter 45

“No, I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“If you’re sure.”

Am I?

The silence grows limbs, knocking us both off course.

“Maybe I should go,” Lucky says, and I have the sinking feeling I won’t see him again if he walks out the door. “I think we could really help each other, but I respect your decision.”

Everything is moving too fast. When I woke up this morning, I had a job, an apartment, a life.

When he reaches the door, I find my legs, rushing over and catching his arm. “Wait, um, I just wanted to say thank you, for this afternoon. It meant a lot.”

He leans in and kisses my cheek. “My pleasure.”

I’m stunned when he reaches into my pocket and pulls out my phone, adding his number to my Contacts after I’ve unlocked it. “If you change your mind about the room.”

I stare at the door long after he leaves. It’s not too late.

I can still change my mind.
