Kameron

A s I walk into Apollyon’s office, I feel the cool air slip into my clothes. The chill wraps around my limbs, taking away all the warmth I had collected from the August air outside. Apollyon likes to keep people uncomfortable and on edge, and the brisk air helps to obtain his desired outcome . He keeps his AC set to a crisp 62 degrees, no matter the temperature outside.

“You didn’t tell me the target would have children accompanying him,” I bark as I drop down in the chair across from him. The old statue of the Virgin Mary, sitting at the edge of his desk, shakes as the vibrations make their way across the wood. Apollyon groans as he leans his elbows down across the solid oak. The entire office is full of old, but rich furniture. The walls are painted a dark green and deep brown leather couches line the walls. The office is finished off with Apollyon, an older man, well past his prime, dripping from head to toe in wealth. His forehead creases almost perfectly match the cracks in his chair, both created from years of rage.

“His children were supposed to be in Europe with their mother. How was I supposed to know that the bitch wasn’t capable of caring for her children longer than a few weeks?”

I roll my neck and let out a short and abrupt laugh. I might be a sin filled man but I could never kill someone when their children are present. The boss knows that and I can already feel the anger building up inside him. He was paying me double what I’d usually expect to remove this target. John was a long time employee of The Garden. An infamous Catholic rehab center here in South Carolina. He had gotten a little too comfortable with others outside of the business, and had been caught sharing the secrets of how this place really works. He was only in town for the day, leaving me no room to get to know my prey before taking him out. Something I wouldn’t have dreamed of doing, until I saw how much Apollyon was willing to pay.

“There are two ways this can go,” I pause, allowing myself time to notice the subtle change in the boss’s facial expressions. It gives away exactly what I had thought. He’s desperate to get rid of John.

“You can either pay me double what you have so far, and I will go out of my way to follow him out of state,” I lean forward, a dark grin beginning to crawl its way across my face. “Or you can kiss this opportunity goodbye, and I will move onto my next job.”

Apollyon’s eyes go wide as his voice raises, “I’ve already paid you double what you’re worth to begin with! Do you really think I’m going to shovel out even more money?”

“Fine,” I say as I begin to stand up from my chair. “Make sure to pick out a suit before your funeral. We both know that wife of yours is going to put you in blue.” I turn to head towards the closed office doors before continuing on, “It won’t be long till John shares your little routine with people who won’t be so forgiving.”

Apollyon fumbles out of his chair and grasps onto the sleeve of my jacket. “Wait! Fine, I’ll have the money wired into your account tonight.”

“Smart move boss,” I laugh as I peel his frail fingers off of me. “And one more thing, Apollyon, never fucking touch me again or you’ll lose more than just your dignity.”
