CHAPTER 15

HUGH

My phone was in my hand again. For the tenth time. And Denny was still fucking ignoring me. I shouldn’t have come at her so hard about the furniture, but I couldn’t understand why she was still convinced that she needed to move back into her apartment.

She was happy with me, and I was happy having her with me. Was it the closets? Hell, I could build a bigger damn closet. Turn the guest room next to the master into a closet. All she had to do was ask. But the woman never fucking asked. She just assumed I wanted my space even after I told her and showed her that what was mine was hers.

Chris was pointing at some of the clean rooms. I could see through the glass that all the workers were wearing static-proof suits.

“They’ve already gotten a lot of offers from tech co-co-companies that want to hoard these chips for them-se-se-selves. Hell, they’re one of the few organizations manufacturing them in Am-Am-America. But they want to do good. And they ca-ca-ca-can do good with us.” Chris pointed at a woman sitting off to the side, her long blonde hair was tied up in some complicated knot.

When she saw us watching, she smiled. That’s when I saw leather gloves on her hands that turned and pushed her wheelchair forward. We met her halfway.

“You must be the money,” she said, holding out her hand to me. I shook it firmly.

“Hugh Calder.”

“June Newcastle. I’ll cut to the chase. What do you think?” she asked, smiling politely.

I appreciated it when people cut straight to it and didn’t make me play the guessing game or waste time with small talk.

“Your financials seem solid, and your operation is small, but seems sound. I have my guy looking into you, but I need to ask you something.” My hands went into my pockets as she crossed her arms.

“Sure.”

“Why Zinc? You could make far more money partnering with… someone else.” I chose my words carefully, knowing that she knew that she had something incredibly special on her hands that she could sell to the government for Abu Dhabi money.

“Simple. This,” she gestured at her chair, “physician error. A one in ten thousand chance. I want that to be one in a million. Robotics can get us there if we let it. These chips are the brain, we’re already working on the mechanics. We need Zinc for the application that brings it all to life.”

She was compelling, that was for damn sure. I nodded and glanced at Chris.

“Okay. Walk me through it,” I said.

“If you come this way, I can introduce you to our lead engineering team. They’re scientists, but they can speak plain English, too.” June wheeled away and Chris gave me a thumbs-up as he followed behind her.

This was huge. She seemed just as charismatic as Chris. Zinc needed something innovative and out of the box to really steal people’s attention.

I pulled out my cell and pulled up my thread with Lucian.

Hey, can you check on Denise for me?

After a few seconds, I saw him start to type.

Me?

I groaned and kept typing.

She’s pissed at me. Just drop in on her.

A string of laughing emojis popped up and I rolled my eyes.

I got you.

Throwing my phone in my pocket, I sighed and made some quick strides to catch up to Chris and June. My gut was telling me this could work.
