CHAPTER 42
DENISE
Cleo was spinning in my chair when we arrived the next morning. Hugh gave me a kiss on the cheek as he placed my suitcase down on my desk.
“I’ll check in on you later,” he said, placing his face in my neck and breathing in the scent of my perfume.
I bit my tongue against the refusal that almost rolled off my lips because it would’ve been a lie. It felt good to have him coming in, asking if I was hungry, making sure I was drinking water and taking breaks.
He glanced over my shoulder. “Sidekick,” he said to Cleo.
Cleo stopped mid-spin in her chair and stood. She straightened the tulle skirt around her waist before walking over and standing toe-to-toe with him.
“Sidepiece,” she quipped back.
He gave her a look and opened his mouth to reply. If I didn’t jump in these two would go at it all morning and I did have some hope of getting work done today. It was bad enough that I had to spend my morning doing interview prep...
“Alright, children, break it up,” I said, stepping forward between them.
“He started it,” Cleo whined, reaching forward to poke his exposed chest.
I turned around and opened my mouth to tell him to go away when I saw the hickey I’d left. My mouth salivated at the memory of his salty skin beneath my tongue, and I already regretted my ban on weekday sex because I was ready to find the nearest bathroom and relive old memories.
I bounced my gaze up to his face, but he was transfixed by the way my teeth had found my bottom lip. Before I could say a word, his tongue reached up and pulled it free before he gripped my neck and brought my mouth to his.
This wasn’t a peck; it was a prelude. I stood up on my tippy toes as he hauled me forward against him and his tongue pushed into my mouth, sweeping in aggressively and tasting every crevice. When I leaned back for air, his teeth found my lip, biting down and pulling it into his mouth. My moan was interrupted by Cleo clearing her throat.
“Umm, this is a place of business,” she interjected.
Coming to my senses, I pushed him back a step and he gave me a toothy smile and a wink before walking out the door without saying another word. My heart was beating a little fast and I took a stuttering breath.
“Y’all are some freaks. How many times have you two fucked in this office?” Cleo’s husky tone behind me had me laughing as my hands came to my warm cheeks.
“Girl, you got three hours. You want to spend them talking about Hugh and me?” I asked. She raised her eyebrows suggestively and I raised mine back. “Or maybe we can talk about you and Lucian?”
She turned around before I’d even finished my question and walked toward my desk, grabbing a stack of paper.
“Alright. Let’s get started,” she said, rubbing her eyes and sitting down on my desk.
Shaking my head, I gave her a look. She was only going to be able to duck me for so long.
