Letter for Mum

Dear Mum,

Sorry it’s taken me a while to reply. It didn’t feel particularly urgent, given that you’re, you know, dead, but I think I also needed this long to know what to say.

Guess what? I got a job. Not the one I always dreamed of, but one that suits me ten times better. I’m getting to travel a bit while living in London around the people I love. I’m pretty sure you’d be proud of me.

Dad met someone. She’s nuts, but I think you’d like her. She couldn’t be more different from him, which I’ve come to learn can be a very good thing.

I met someone too. It breaks my heart that you’ll never get to meet him, but I know you’d love him.

He’s spectacular – gorgeous, talented, kind, and funny.

I can’t tell you how much fun we have together.

More than that, he’s made me a better person.

More honest, with myself and others. In fact, if I’d written to you any sooner, I’m not sure you could have trusted my reassurances, but thanks to Hunter, you can believe every word.

I’ve got this.

I love you,

Max
