Chapter 2 #2

His lips attacked mine, as he held onto my neck with one hand and my back with the other. Fuck.

We were airborne seconds later, him standing with me in his arms, carrying us both inside.

Lips locked and all, I still heard the patio doors lock before he carried us down a brief hall to what I assumed was his bedroom.

I was right because he lay me against the bed in seconds, then stood.

“Are you sure you're up for this?” he asked, staring at me.

I nodded. “Yep.”

He looked at me for a minute, almost studying me.

Seconds later his shirt was over his head and he walked out of the room. “Be right back.”

I didn’t think, just acted. Undressing myself so he didn’t have to. He was a tree I was up to climbing. It had been months since I’d had any, so hell yeah.

When he reentered the room, I was comfortably resting on my elbows, watching him.

He held up a box of condoms and I smiled. Even a dead man was prepared.

I then watched him drop his sweats and boxers, showcasing what I knew would help me get a good night’s rest tonight. He was long, thick, and inviting. I probably should have chickened out because his dick was so long it should have had its own theme song.

He covered himself in the latex before coming over to me. Gripping my ankles, he pulled me to the end of the bed.

I couldn’t help but touch him, opening my legs wider then touching myself in anticipation.

Thick. Commanding and weighted.

He leaned down, attempting to swallow my lips. He gripped his length, playing in my wetness, heavy eyes on me.

Then, without warning, he began to feed himself into me and I felt like I was being shattered in the best way possible. My body naturally opened for him. This was definitely gonna be a long night… I could feel it. Literally.

“You miss what you do?” he asked out of nowhere, the pungent aroma of weed filling my nostrils. I should have been leaving, yet when I got up to do so, he asked me to stay a little longer, stating he wasn’t ready to go back to complete silence yet again.

“I did at first, then it became easier not to think about it as time went by.”

“What about it made it what you want to do?” he asked, slumped against the headboard of his bed.

“No stillness and always being on the move. Never being anywhere long enough to foster real connections or ever needing to.”

“And now you're back here?”

“Yup, back here, still.” I sighed, feeling the frustrated breath I exhaled from my chest.

Days later

I held the gun up and aimed at the target in front of me. I was fresh off no sleep, craving the dick of a man I knew I shouldn’t have laid with but had. It’d been months since I laid with anyone, and after lying with him, I now remembered why I steered clear of men, especially those like him.

Dark. Messy. Tempting.

I emptied the clip into the marked target, all head shots and one deviation. That deviation came from the vibration against my thigh.

I set the gun down and went into my pocket. When I pulled my phone out and saw the screen, irritation coursed through me at the name on the screen. Forman.

The phone stopped vibrating and I set it on the table, my attention shocked because that was the last contact I expected to be dialing my line. Then again, maybe not. I’d been missing in action long enough and I was sure she wanted to know when I’d be back. Was I even ready?

For the duration of my time at the range, my attention was shot, which meant I was no good.

When I made it home, I took a seat on the sofa and tried to catch up with my thoughts.

Not only were they heavy, but running a mile a minute.

Forman calling meant something somewhere had gone wrong and I was needed.

That would be the only reason she reached out.

I closed my eyes and sighed. Was I ready to step back into that life? Shit, had I even stepped out?

Another vibration from my phone had me lifting it to hover over my face. This time it wasn’t Forman, but Lauryn. I looked from the name calling to the time. I was supposed to be at her place for dinner tonight.

I started not to answer, but if I didn’t her ass would indeed keep calling. Lauryn thought she was everybody’s mama, so telling her anything other than what she wanted to hear would have her all at my head about not showing up.

“I’m on my way, Lauryn,” I said before she could even get into a good lecture about showing up.

“Are you sure? You sound like you’re on your way to sleep. Speaking of, Dad says you’re not sleeping. Is there something we need to talk about?”

“Nope, not at all. I’m on the way.”

She laughed, aware that I was full of shit but deciding to let it go. “Fine, see you in a few.”

We hung up and I pushed my body off the sofa a second later. If I would have spent any longer on it, I wouldn’t have gotten up. I would’ve dozed off for about an hour. I never slept for too long, given I felt like it was too close to death.

By the time I made it to my sister’s house, I was more exhausted than I started.

I should’ve asked her ass for a raincheck because I didn’t feel like being social nor did I feel like faking it.

Dinner always meant her and her husband’s friends around as well.

She’d had about five of these dinners since I’d gotten home.

Two of which I’d missed and got a lecture about.

The others I barely made. I either cut out early or chilled in the room with my niece because most, if not all, of the adults in the room got on my fucking nerves.

It was one in particular, my brother-in-law’s friend.

He was a sergeant at the local precinct and so fucking pompous and all-knowing.

I hated men like that, the type who had to always get the last word because too many women kissed their feet instead of humbling them.

“I definitely thought I was going to have to give you the silent treatment,” Lauryn said the moment I walked into the kitchen where she stood with her best friend Lola.

I laughed. “Girl, bye. Silent treatment or a long ass voicemail? What’s up, Lo?” I greeted, hugging my sister then Lola.

“Nothing, but um… where have you been? You’re home but you’re not home,” Lola said before I could say anything else.

I laughed. She was like a little sister to me too. She had been best friends with Lauryn since we were kids.

“Been around. Are you good?”

“I am now. Especially now that you’re here and I know ol’ boy is going to find his way into your face.” She winked. “I enjoy watching him fawn while you avoid.”

I already knew who she was talking about. I shook my head. “Y’all ain’t right.”

“Maybe not, but under all that bravado, he seems to have a thing for you. Too bad you don’t give him the time of day,” Lauryn said before sipping from her wine glass.

“Yeah, too bad. He’s the type of man you’d find yourself hitting in the mouth very often.” Lola held her hand up like she was about to backhand somebody.

The three of us laughed. I was grateful that most of the party was in the living room and on the patio. The kitchen was pretty much clear besides the three of us. Well, until I heard a certain throat clearing.

I rolled my eyes to the ceiling before finally turning around.

Of course it was the sergeant. He was fine, but when he opened his mouth, all of that dissipated.

He became a know-it-all. Shit… a fool in my eyes.

I wonder if that was the way he picked up women, by talking about himself and all of his accomplishments.

I was about to speak, but my phone vibrated in my hand. I lifted it and looked at the screen. The number was unsaved, but I knew who it was.

17774657765: You busy?

“It’s good to see you, Liora. I was wondering when you’d be here.

” He grinned and my stomach turned. I was beginning to think Lauryn invited me here specifically for this man to be in my face, even though I’d told her and her husband several times it was a no-go.

I was too liable to hit this man in his throat before I ever gave him the time of day.
