Chapter 21

Chapter Twenty-One

EVAN

I was abrupt with Vada.

I had to be.

She was going on about how boring these parties were, how it was like attending a children’s party. She suggested we go somewhere more ‘mature’ after, and I completely ignored her. Instead, I was watching Arden and the fact that he had his hands all over Jain. I saw Jain’s discomfort, the anger in her eyes, and the defiant tilt of her chin. She was in defensive mode, and Arden seemed to be mocking her.

“Vada, I’m sorry, but I’m not interested. I don’t see you that way. Excuse me,” I muttered as she gaped after me.

I strode through the crowd easily—before advising Arden it would be best if he moved his lips away from Jain’s neck. I didn’t add that if he failed to do so, I would rip his lips off and shove them so far up his ass he would choke on them.

Jain was unreadable, and Arden made it clear he knew about Jain and me. His smug grin combined with his hold on Jain made it almost unbearable—I had to retaliate. So, what if he knew? He was a waster. He missed school most of the time—my colleagues didn’t hold him in high regard anyway.

It would be his word against mine.

“You left me for a fucking teacher?” Arden hissed at Jain, and she flinched at the mention of my profession.

After informing him that he lost her purely from his own actions and choices, he seemed to slip back into his calm exterior.

“So, does your girlfriend know about this?”

Jain inhaled sharply, and Arden smirked.

I had to make some quick assumptions in my head—one of which was that Arden had seen me with Jain. The second was that he was now making things up to hurt Jain and cause trouble between us.

“Arden, shut up,” Jain hissed before she turned and walked away.

I sent Arden a death stare. “I strongly recommend you do as she says. I’m not afraid of losing my job, but it won’t be because of a little shit like you.”

I followed Jain, who had left the room and outside into the crisp fresh air.

The moonlight illuminated her, making her look even more stunning.

How could a woman have this effect on me?

Her body was hugged by the silky soft material, her thigh peeking out subtly. But it wasn’t just her beauty—it was something in the way she looked at me that did it. I didn’t waste any time in setting her straight about what Arden had said.

“I don’t have a girlfriend, or a wife, or any form of significant other.”

Jain’s body seemed to sag with relief as she nodded.

“It’s just that Harley said he saw you with your ‘fit bird,’ then I saw that stunning blonde leave your house declaring her love for you—which may I say, you returned. Now, this—”

I glanced around us, tugging her around one of the many trees that surrounded us so that we were partially out of sight.

“Jain. You saw Amelia, my sister, as did Harley. You can meet her when we are...public, shall we say? We’re quite close, and she doesn’t live far from me,” I confessed, realising that since I’d started seeing Jain, I had barely spoken to Amelia.

I felt guilty about it but was brought back to reality when Jain pressed her lips against mine. I groaned against her, knowing that if anyone saw us—

“Typical teenagers.” A voice grumbled as I kept my eyes firmly closed.

Jain smirked against my mouth, and I couldn’t help but peek at the verbal intruder. Surprisingly, it was one of my colleagues who had quite a challenging home life. I saw him swinging into his car before screeching out of the car park.

“Shall we go?” I huskily asked as Jain nodded.

I swept the hair from her eyes as we walked over to my car. We climbed in quickly, but not quickly enough.

I jumped when someone rapped on my driver’s window, and I turned to see the curious eyes of my superior staring back at me. I swallowed before opening my window.

“Everything ok?” I asked innocently as his gaze flickered over to Jain beside me.

“May I ask what is going on here?”

His voice was calm but stern, and I knew he was suspicious. I flashed him a smooth smile before turning to Jain .

“Jain’s friend, Kate? She’s in a rather, ah, delicate situation—”

“I’m aware, Mr Silver.” He huffed, his eyes trained on mine.

“Well, she had to go home ill. Jain here was about to walk home—”

“Walk home?” He barked, raising his eyebrows at Jain, who shrugged beside me. “Why on earth would you attempt that?”

“Silly really, Sir. But then Mr Silver said he wouldn’t mind dropping me at Kate’s; I was lucky actually.”

He eyed us both before nodding.

“Indeed, you are. Are you sure it’s not out of your way, Mr Silver? I am leaving too now. I’m a tad too old for these parties, I’m afraid. If it’s easier for me to drop Jain—”

“No need, Sir. I live streets away from the address Ms Martin here gave me,” I said politely, hoping he would move on.

Quickly.

He nodded before smiling at me with gratitude.

“You’re lucky to have such a caring teacher, young lady. Don’t attempt to walk home again, please. You can always ask us.”

“Yes, Sir, thank you.” Jain smiled, and he tapped the top of the car with his hand.

“Goodnight, Mr Silver. Jain.” He nodded before walking away, swinging his car keys around his fingers.

I exhaled and quickly exited the car park, checking my rear-view to ensure he wasn’t following us.

“Maybe I should drop you at home, just in case,” I mumbled with annoyance, remembering Arden’s smug little face.

Jain nodded glumly before directing me to her house. Whilst we drove, she called to check on Kate .

“She’s asleep. Sarah said she has been sick again, so she is going to the doctor tomorrow for advice. It must be awful,” she murmured, lost in thought as she typed away on her phone.

“Does she have any idea who the father is?” I asked, trying to keep the disapproval from my voice.

“I don’t think so. It has to be Arden,” Jain sighed, gazing out of the window.

“He seemed more interested in you than any potential children. I hope for her sake that it’s not his.”

She nodded, and I stole a glance at her. At the same time, she turned to look at me.

“What?!” She exclaimed, a smile playing on her lips.

“I’m going to miss you tonight.”

I pulled up outside of her house, noticing the light was on.

“Me too. Ugh, my mum is still up. I’ll text you later, though?” Jain looked at me hopefully as I tore my gaze away from her lips.

“I expect nothing less.” I smiled when suddenly she leaned over, pressing her lips against mine as her tongue crept into my mouth. I kissed her back hungrily before remembering where we were.

“Not here,” I groaned as she kissed me softly on the lips.

“Goodnight, Mr Silver.”

“Goodnight, Angel,” I whispered as I watched her walk to the door, her hips seductively swaying before she turned to gaze at me, her mouth forming the words I longed to hear.

I love you.

I smiled then, pointing back at her.

Man, I was in trouble.
