Chapter 30

MITCHELL

“Mitchell, you have an emergency request to report to sickbay immediately.”

Xero’s voice yanked my attention from the workers assembling and placing our new furniture, ice racing down my spine at his words.

“What? Has something happened? Oh, God, did Jolar get attacked?” I cried out, panicking.

I knew they were investigating a murder and the suspect had been less than cooperative and sometimes outright hostile.

Had she made a shank out of a spoon and stabbed him?

My mind was imagining all sorts of scenarios, none of them good, and all of them having my mate dying.

The door chimed, and Xero must have used the auto open feature as it slid open to allow Darla inside.

“Honey, you need to get down to sickbay so they can calm the horny beast before he goes full Godzilla,” she said, breathing heavily as if she’d been running. Which she must have, I realized belatedly, noting she was wearing a bakery apron dusted with flour on it.

‘He’s gone into mating frenzy? But he wasn’t in full plumage when he got up this morning! I thought we had until late tonight or tomorrow!”

“Go! I’ll supervise these guys.”

“Neal’s home today.”

“He’ll be fine. I’ll let him know you and Jolar needed to go somewhere overnight and that he’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Thank you!” I said, making a dash for the door.

Shit! Had my desire to see him in full plumage caused this?

Ugh! My lack of exercise and extra pounds were definitely not doing me any favors now as I ran.

I was already huffing and puffing by the time I made it out the door and down the short distance to the elevator.

“Xero, take me to sickbay,” I said and immediately felt the elevator begin to move.

Three floors flashed by, then it paused for a split second before beginning to move sideways.

That had tripped me out the first time it had happened, the day I went to go meet Dr. Proslo who was not only my mentor, but the Senior Chief Medic for the entire Fleet.

How I’d gotten that lucky, I have no idea but I was grateful.

My heart thundered in my chest and spots danced before my eyes and I tried to regulate my breathing, recognizing the signs of a panic attack.

“Probably… wasn’t… the donuts… and… cake… after all,” I gasped aloud. “Okay, Mitchell. Slow… even breaths.”

The elevator came to a stop, and the doors opened, directly into sickbay. I stumbled out and one of the medics on duty grabbed me.

“Whoa, there! Mitchell, right? He’s in cubicle seven. He’s fine, but we needed to give him an inhibitor to slow down his hormonal responses and get him stable enough to go take care of business.”

“He’s okay?” Tears pricked my eyes. “This is all my fault! I told him I thought the scales were super sexy and wanted to see him in full plumage!” I sobbed.

“And that normally would have been okay,” Dr. Proslo said, appearing in the doorway of Jolar’s cubicle. “Unfortunately, his hormones went into overdrive, probably a consequence of the perceived threat to you and your young.”

I steadied myself on the door frame. “Perceived threat?”

“Linda Takahashi wished to take Braevan and Chitose’s young brother,” I heard Jolar rasp from the bed.

Dr. Proslo moved aside to let me pass and my eyes quickly cataloged my mate’s appearance.

He was truly magnificent. He was shirtless, of course, as the Mylos uniform did not include one for unknown reasons.

Not that I was complaining, because, lawd have mercy, eye candy EVERYWHERE.

Most delicious of all was Jolar and right now, he was hitting all of my buttons at once.

His gorgeous scales were across the backs of his hands, running up his muscled arms and across those yummy broad shoulders, up that strong neck, making a stripe I wanted to run my tongue along, right up to his temples where I’d plant a gentle kiss before devouring his mouth and moving -

“Mitchell?”

“Huh?” Oh, shit. Dr. Proslo had been talking to me. Jolar gave me a knowing smirk. “Right, sorry, my mind was catching up to the fact that Jolar is mighty fine…I mean, that he’s okay.”

I heard a feminine giggle from behind me, knowing that Paula, the human medic working triage, heard my fumbling response.

“Yes, well, he’s not okay exactly,” Dr. Proslo chided, “but he’s steady enough that he can be escorted to a guest suite so you both can get his, ah, condition, under complete control.”

My face flushed scarlet. We’d just been given a prescription to basically go to a hotel and fuck like bunnies.

This was like the intro to a porn film. My cock was definitely on board though, as was Jolar’s from the way the sheet over his lap was tented.

Oh! His treasure trail had a light dusting of teeny scales now too!

“I am ready to leave now, Mitch,” Jolar said, his tone teasing despite the desperate edge I could hear in it.

“Yep, guest suite. Um, Neal is with Darla, and she’s watching the guys put together the new furniture I ordered.” Great, Mitchell. Just word vomit irrelevant details. All he needed to know was Neal was in safe hands.

Jolar nodded and pulled the sheet back. I reared back, seeing he was nude.

“Careful!” I admonished him.

“My pants won’t fit over this,” he said.

“There’s a wrap in the cupboard,” Dr. Proslo said helpfully.

“We’ll give you some privacy to get dressed.

He tugged me out of the room by my arm before closing the door.

“I didn’t dare leave you in there the way you were looking at each other,” he explained, and now my face and ears were on fire.

I was positive there were literal flames licking around my skin.

He chuckled. “It’s all right, Mitchell.” he patted my arm, trying to reassure me. “It’s nothing we haven’t seen from time to time. Sometimes it just happens. At least he wasn’t fully gone running amok all over Oahu.”

“What?” Had that happened? I really wanted to hear that story.

“You’re friends with Darla, yes? I heard you say she’s watching your young.”

“Um, yes. We recently became acquainted. She’s super nice!”

“Ask her about it. I’m sure she and the rest of her cohort would love to share that entire saga with you over cannolis.”

Cannolis? Count me in!

The door opened, revealing Jolar in a sort of toga type thing, slides on his feet.

He had a bag in his hand, presumably with his uniform trousers, sash, and boots in it.

I hoped he hadn’t lost a sock in there. I really hated finding I was a sock short during laundry.

The sock monster was real and he didn’t need any extra help, even if I could simply order a few new pairs for free. It was the principle of the thing.

And why am I thinking about socks right now? I asked myself. Get a grip!

“There you are.”

The door to sickbay opened and two security officers came in.

“Dude, from what I heard, I was afraid you’d gone into full mating frenzy,” one of them said.

“I stabilized him just in time. Thankfully he was cognizant enough to come here instead of straight home.”

“My fingertips started aching and I knew my claws were wanting to come out,” Jolar said by way of explanation.

Holy shifter porn, spaceman! Claws?

I hadn’t known they grew claws but now that I looked closer at Jolar, I noticed his teeth looked...well, fangier.

Oh la la, I mentally fanned myself.

“Okay, well, let’s get you to the guest quarters you’ve been assigned for tonight and tomorrow before one of you jumps the other and gives everyone a free show,” the Mylos said.

“Thanks, Klora. Sorry to drag you away from the interrogation.”

“Nah, that’s alright. Linda Takahashi decided to do nothing but sing.

Sachuu asked his first question and she started on about some racehorse named Stewball and it went downhill from there. The L.T.C.

is just waiting for her to take a breath so he can ask his next question before she starts another song.

She was singing about a dragon playing on a beach the last I heard. ”

That woman sounded like a real piece of work.

“That’s the murderer, right?” I asked, my cock deflating a little. Only a little, mind you, as Jolar smelled especially amazingly good right now.

“Yep,” Klora said. “Now, let’s go. I need to get back to The Linda Takahashi Variety Hour.”

I snorted. I knew Klora was Jolar’s best friend, and I liked him already. When things went back to normal, we’d have to invite him over for dinner again.

Jolar offered me his arm and I took it, happily going along behind Klora, the other security guy trailing behind us.
