Chapter 62

62

Two days later

I wake up chained to a hospital bed. A police officer is sitting beside me, half asleep. When he hears me pulling on the clinking metal cuffs, he startles awake. His eyes widen and he presses a button beside him.

“What happened?” I mumble, mouth dry.

But the man refuses to talk to me. I’m disoriented, a screaming headache gnawing at my brain like it’s been cleaved in half. My lungs are harsh, tight. Every breath is a rattle and a cough. A blurry rush of doctors, nurses, police officers. Their murmurs are deafening and disturbing. It reminds me of cooing girls.

I close my eyes and escape into sleep again.
