CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

RAINA

I wake to Kage, kissing my neck softly, and I moan as I open my eyes with a smile on my face.

“Your present is here, Firecracker. It’ll start to smell if we wait too long.”

My eyes pop open at his words.

“Start to smell?”

He looks at me like it’s obvious, and I know what the hell he’s talking about.

Kage pulls the blankets off me.

“Come on. It’s in the kitchen.”

I get up with a groan, and grab the bathrobe and slip it on.

“Nobody else is here?”

He grins at me, seeming excited for me to see his smelly gift.

“Just us, Firecracker.”

Taking my hand, he walks me to the living room, and I scream as I jump back.

“What the fuck?”

Leo’s head sits on a silver platter on top of the coffee table, his eyes fucking staring at me. I run behind Kage, as my heart pounds so hard I think I might need to go back to the hospital.

“He’s dead, baby.”

This is my gift? A severed head?

I peek around Kage, and see what was my uncle’s head sitting there staring at me. I can’t handle it. I simply can’t.

“Can you close his eyes?”

He walks over and does as I asked, as I still stand stunned.

“Do you not like it?”

I laugh because it’s ridiculous.

“Lorenzo, I love that you killed him for me, but you could have just told me that he was dead. I did not need proof. But thank you. Now, can we get rid of the head?”

He smiles, and it hits me right in the heart. When Kage smiles, his eyes brighten, and it’s beautiful. Much better than when he’s angry.

“Go upstairs. I’ll take care of it and wash my hands.”

I go to the bedroom and wait, while he disposes of the damn head. The part about the smell makes sense now. He comes into the bedroom and says, “Give me five minutes for a shower.”

Taking a seat on the edge of the bed, I watch the news, as I roll my eyes at the television. Some things never change. This world is a dark place. And in a flash, mine gets a whole lot darker.
