Chapter 17 #2

She answered with a cry that cracked and re-formed itself as my name.

She rocked back so my thighs met the backs of hers, her body accepting the twin invasions like design rather than sin.

I rubbed the base of her right wing with my thumb in tight, even circles; the left I grazed lightly with my nails.

She made a sound I had not heard from her before—high, helpless, astonished.

“Again?” I asked, meaning all of it.

“Yes,” she sobbed. “Don’t stop. Don’t—”

“I will not,” I promised, and I didn’t. I set my mouth to her shoulder, breathed her in, and worked her body as if I had been made for this single operation.

The soft brush of her feathers over my forearm, the yield and grip of her, the smaller, wicked stretch where my finger moved in rhythm—it became a single sensation, too large for words.

I rode it with her, and when she sobbed my name again, the sound broke on a note that told me we were standing on the lip of something that would not be denied.

“Come for me,” I said softly into the warm shell of her ear. “Open and let it take you. I will hold you through.”

Her head dropped. The wings shook, gold brightening as if lit from within.

Her body clenched around me with a pulse that knocked the breath from my chest. She came with a strangled cry that turned into a broken plea I could not quite catch, and I pressed my palm down at the base of her wing and felt every trembling beat of her heart translate through feather and skin into my bones.

I took her through it, hips moving, finger easing just enough to let her body convulse without pain, voice a low string of Russian endearments that had not left my mouth in centuries.

When the worst of it passed, she sagged forward on her forearms, panting, wings still high and open like stained glass left out under the sun.

“Beautiful,” I said, not to flatter. To document.

She turned her face sideways against the throw and smiled like a woman who had finally been given her true name. “So are you,” she said, and the warmth in it fed me better than any blood.

I was still inside her. Still thick, still shaking with restraint. The next step was inevitable and, for once, welcome. I let her feel the shudder I could no longer hide, and when she flexed around me in a deliberate, wicked little squeeze, I nearly growled.

“Greedy,” I chided, and my voice held nothing of censure.

“Teach me to be more,” she answered, and the dare went through me like a thrown knife that chose to kiss instead of cut.

“Wings away,” I whispered against her shoulder, and the room seemed to lean closer to hear whether she would obey me or the sky.

She did not hesitate. The gold muted; the purple deepened; then the feathers receded, drawn back into the fine architecture of her body as if the world had been briefly expanded and was now distilled to its strongest proof.

My palms followed the retreat, smoothing the last quiver at the bases until there was only radiant skin under my hands and the faintest echo of light where the marks lived.

I dragged her upright onto her knees. She was pliant and fierce at once; the line of her back curved flush against my chest. I slid one arm low around her to hold her, the other found her clit and circled in a firm, steady rhythm.

I thrust up into her, the angle different now, deeper, cruel with how good it felt.

Her hands reached behind and gripped my hips.

The sound she made when I pressed the heel of my palm just right would have made the guards at my staircase bless themselves if they had heard.

She lifted her hair without my asking and dragged the bright skein to one side with a deliberateness that made my fangs ache. Her neck bared itself like a lit path. An offering. A command disguised as a gift.

“Good girl,” I murmured, and I felt her pulse trip under the words.

I bent and licked the column of her throat.

Cool skin, salt, that strange sweetness I had not yet named.

My tongue traced the vein where it beat fastest, counting for the sheer satisfaction of it.

I could hear the club below us, muted and distant, but nothing in me belonged to it now.

My empire had waited centuries; my mate’s throat would not.

I let my fangs slide free. The little ache in my gums was almost domestic after the exiles I had endured. I set the points lightly, warning her. She pushed down against my cock in response and tilted her throat higher.

I pierced her.

Warmth flooded my mouth. Not the iron-dark profile of mortal blood, but the electric spice of celestial blood.

This moved like light through water, clean and bright, with a low golden hum that spread through my gums and into the bones of my face.

I swallowed and nearly forgot to breathe.

I took carefully, measured sips an older version of me would have mocked.

She trembled in my arms and cried out my name; the sound pitched halfway between plea and accusation.

I thrust up into her as I drank, my hand on her clit keeping its circles with mathematical precision.

She rode me with abandon now, legs shaking, the little muscles of her abdomen fluttering against my forearm.

Each pull of blood into my mouth tangled with the pull of her body, and the twin rhythms collided until they became a single engine driving both of us toward the only conclusion that made any sense.

The room brightened.

It was not the lamps. It was not a power surge.

It began under my hands where we met and climbed through our skin like dawn forced to come early and through the wrong window.

The air warmed—just a degree, just enough to make the hairs on my forearms rise.

Light bled from the edges of us and laid itself across the couch, the low table, the curve of the glass wall with a patient insistence that felt like grace weaponized.

I heard her voice, not with ears; it slid into my head the way a familiar scent unlocks a staircase of memory.

I love you, it said, unadorned and not ashamed. The thought fit the shape of my skull like it had been cast there before bone decided what to be.

I might have stopped moving from the shock if my body had belonged solely to me. It did not. It belonged to us, and she took pity on my astonishment by pressing down hard at the same moment that I sucked a little deeper and rolled her clit tighter. The world broke open.

She came with a light I could not have manufactured even in a thousand well-funded nights.

It poured out of her, through me, around us.

Her body seized mine and made her an instrument, and I obeyed because there was no other path left that counted as living.

I thrust once, twice—lost count. My orgasm hit with a violence that would have unsettled me if not for the arms I had around her.

I grunted into her neck like a man on his knees in front of an altar and spilled into her in waves that kept coming long past where such things should end.

The power riding it stole my breath and handed me a cleaner one.

In the middle of it, I heard her again—not words; the steady, unflinching intention of love.

The tether between us, already iron from the mating bite, went tighter but somehow gentler—a silk rope pulling us toward the same future whether we sprinted or crawled.

I had not asked for such a thing, not recently. The not-asking had never mattered less.

I forced myself to stop drinking before sense failed me.

I sealed the punctures with my tongue, licking slow until the last of the sting dulled and the skin knit fine and clean.

Her pulse steadied against my mouth. My own pulse—that old ghost—moved in every limb, not beating so much as reminding me that undeath had rules it could bend for a price.

I leaned back, panting like a man who had run too far and been rewarded with the finish line he did not believe existed.

Light still gathered around us in soft swells, then began to retreat the way tides do when a moon decides it has made its point.

In its wake, a different recognition rose in me.

My senses sharpened past their usual cruel edge.

The wards around the office, old and stubborn, tasted like fresh-minted coins.

The distant sounds from the club stacked themselves by species and intent.

If power had a flavor, I had just swallowed a mouthful.

It did not rage. It sang, a clean note that set my bones humming.

She turned in my lap. I was still inside her. I felt that before I registered the color draining from her face. Her eyes, those aquamarine marvels, went owlish; unfocused. Her fingers trembled where they found my jaw.

“Kazimir,” she said, unsteady. “I think—” She swallowed. “I need…your blood.”

I had lived long enough to be cautious about surprises.

It can kill. But astonishment broke through, clean as ice.

Angels drinking vampire blood sat poorly with every story I had ever heard.

We did not mix in that direction. I almost said as much.

Then I watched her mouth go pale and the tremor worsen. The decision took no time at all.

“Hold on,” I said, and brought my wrist to my mouth. The skin there was an old scar; it parted easily. The first pulse of my blood was deep and black-red against her light. It steamed slightly in the cooler room air. I held it to her lips.

She did not sip. She drank like a woman who’d been thirsty too long.
