The War Forces His Hand
The black envelope is waiting on my desk.
Same matte finish. Same heavy stock. Same absence of name or stamp or postmark.
It is sitting on top of Fabio's security briefing like a crown placed on a coffin — deliberate, ceremonial, designed to be the first thing I see when I walk into my own office at six in the morning with coffee in my hand and the taste of Nova still on my lips from the way she kissed me in the hallway before I left the bedroom.
I set the coffee down. The ceramic clicks against the desk and the sound is a detonation in the silence.
The envelope is heavier than the one that held the photographs. I can feel the weight of paper inside — multiple pages, dense, the heft of something assembled with care. I press my thumb beneath the flap and pull out a dossier.
Printed. Physical. Twelve pages held together with a black clip.
The first page is a communication log. Dates running down the left column.
Names down the right. I recognize the format — old Vescari encoding, the same system their operatives used to track contacts during Giovanni's era.
My eyes catch the date at the top of the log and my blood turns to something colder than ice. Something that does not move at all.
July 14th. Five years ago. The night I used a burner phone from the gas station on Ninth Street to call a man named Corsetti and tell him that Giovanni's study detail rotated at eleven instead of midnight on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
I was seventeen. My hands were shaking so badly I dropped the phone twice.
I could still hear Dante crying through the wall of his bedroom — the sound a fifteen-year-old boy makes when his father has just held him by the throat with his feet off the floor and told him that weakness is a disease he would beat out of him if he had to.
The dossier has all of it.
Every call. Every piece of information I fed the Vescari.
The rotation schedules, the perimeter gaps, the specific alteration to Giovanni's security protocol that my intelligence made possible.
Laid out with surgical precision — dates verified, channels identified, the exact thread pulled from the Rivas security architecture that created the window on the night Giovanni married Zina.
The night a gift box reached his bedroom.
The night a cobra decided everything his sons would become.
My name is on every page. Romeo Rivas. Seventeen years old. Contact designation: INTERIOR ASSET.
Interior asset. The Vescari gave me a designation. They filed me the way they filed informants and compromised guards and anyone else whose loyalty had a crack wide enough to slip a blade through. I thought I was saving my brothers. They catalogued me as a tool.
I set the dossier facedown on the desk. My hands are still.
Completely, perfectly still — and the stillness is worse than shaking because shaking is a body processing fear and stillness is a body that has moved past fear into the territory beyond it.
The place where the math is finished and the only thing left is the result.
Isadora has my confession in twelve printed pages.
Which means the Marchese have it. Which means it exists outside the two people who have carried it — Santino and me — in a form I cannot control, cannot contain, cannot burn before it reaches the one person whose opinion will determine whether anything I have built in this penthouse survives the morning.
Nova will see this. If Isadora chooses. If the Marchese choose. If the Mole decides that the most efficient way to dismantle Romeo Rivas is to hand his wife a document that proves the man sleeping beside her is the reason his father is dead.
I press my palms flat against the desk. The wood pushes back — cold, unyielding.
The secret I have carried since I was seventeen just became a weapon aimed at the only person I cannot lose.
The Choice Between Versions
I could shape this.
The thought arrives with Giovanni's fluency — smooth, architectural, already assembling itself into a version before I have finished acknowledging the impulse.
I could sit Nova down tonight and give her a confession calibrated for damage control.
The broad strokes. The emotional truth without the operational detail.
I was young. I made a mistake. My father's security was compromised. The result was catastrophic.
Every sentence accurate. Every sentence incomplete.
I could tell her I contacted the Vescari without telling her what I gave them.
I could frame the security alteration as an accident of proximity rather than a direct consequence of intelligence I personally delivered.
I could let her believe the door opened on its own — a systemic failure, a coincidence of timing — rather than admitting I handed someone the key and watched them copy it.
Giovanni would do this. Giovanni did this — with Bella, with Zina, with every person he claimed to love.
He built versions the way other men build houses.
Foundation of truth. Walls of omission. A roof of plausible context to keep the rain out.
You could live inside one of Giovanni's versions for years without realizing the floor was hollow.
I learned at his table. I watched the master work.
I absorbed his methods the way I absorbed everything in that house — through the skin, through the blood, through the particular osmosis of a boy who spent seventeen years studying a king and cannot always tell where the education ends and the infection begins.
The dossier sits facedown on my desk. Twelve pages.
My entire confession documented by the people I gave it to — the Vescari, who filed me as an interior asset, who catalogued my desperation the way accountants catalogue expenses, who took a seventeen-year-old boy's love for his brothers and entered it into a ledger alongside rotation schedules and perimeter codes.
Isadora has this. The Marchese have this. The Mole — whoever is breathing inside my walls — fed it to the woman who kills people for a living and she printed it on heavy paper and slid it into a black envelope and placed it on my desk the way she placed the photographs on my kitchen counter.
She is not trying to destroy me with a blade.
She is trying to destroy me with my wife.
Because if Nova reads this dossier — twelve pages of Vescari intelligence logs with my name on every entry — she will not hear a seventeen-year-old boy trying to save his brothers.
She will hear a traitor. She will see INTERIOR ASSET stamped across the man who sleeps beside her and holds her hand against his chest and promised her a life that would be different from the one she had.
I push away from the desk. Stand. The office is dark except for the desk lamp throwing a cone of yellow light across the pages I cannot bring myself to look at again.
The hallway is six feet away. Beyond it, the kitchen. Beyond that, the bedrooms where Tomás sleeps with his rocket nightlight and Marisol sleeps with her lock checked three times and Nova sleeps with her hand on the pillow where my head belongs.
I have two doors.
Behind one is Giovanni's method. The version.
Smooth, partial, delivered with enough sincerity to satisfy the question while keeping the worst of it locked in a vault she will never find.
It will work. It has always worked. Every relationship I have ever had ran on versions — curated, controlled, the charming performance of a man who understood early that the full truth empties rooms.
Behind the other door is the thing Giovanni never did in his life.
The whole truth. Ugly. Unmanaged. Every detail laid out on the kitchen counter the way Isadora laid it on my desk — without cushion, without context designed to soften the impact, without the scaffolding of a man who needs the listener to forgive him before he finishes speaking.
Nova asked me once — in this hallway, in this dark, with her hand against my chest — to look at her and mean something.
I pull the dossier off the desk. Fold it once. Slide it into my back pocket.
She does not want my version.
She wants me.
And if the man underneath the versions is someone she cannot live with, I would rather know tonight than spend the rest of this war performing for a woman who deserved the truth from the moment she signed her name next to mine in a courthouse that smelled like floor wax and the end of pretending.
The Walk to Her
She is teaching Tomás fractions.
I stop in the doorway and I watch because in thirty seconds I am going to walk into that kitchen and say something that might ruin the way she looks at me, and I need to memorize this version of her face before it changes.
The version where she trusts me. The version where the man she married is someone worth building a life beside.
Nova is sitting at the counter with a worksheet spread between them, her finger tracing a number line while Tomás squints at it like it owes him money.
She explains the same concept three different ways — once with words, once by cutting an apple into quarters with the paring knife from the block, once by sliding four sugar packets across the counter and asking him to divide them between two imaginary friends.
She does not lose patience. Her voice stays level.
Her hands stay steady. She treats his confusion as intelligence looking for the right doorway rather than a failure to understand — and something in my chest fractures watching it because this is the woman I married.
This is who she is when no one is threatening her siblings or breaching her walls or asking her to carry the weight of a war she never wanted.
