Chapter 27
Skye
T he sky is a gray haze as the dawn breaks, but I still can’t tell where I am from the small bathroom window, nor is there a soul in sight for me to call out for help. I wonder if I could use the mini fridge to bash that prick’s head in? But I doubt it would even stun him, it barely weighs anything and he’s several inches taller than me. The only other thing in the room that’s moveable is the contract and pen he left behind.
Perhaps I could stab him with it?
A definite long shot, but I walk over and pick it up anyway. Having it in my hand makes me feel a little safer, though no doubt it won’t be of any use. I hear the door open, and I spring to attention, hiding it behind my back—as if that’s going to do me any good. But the person who walks through the door takes me completely by surprise.
“Veronica?” I say incredulously.
Behind her, my mustachioed captor looks on smugly at my surprised expression. “Oh, you should see your face!” he chortles, “You thought Veronica was with your little Angels, didn’t you? Nah, she wanted a real man. A Demon in the sack,” he says laughing at his own joke before pulling Veronica in for a kiss. Although tongue wrestling match would be a more accurate way to describe it though the way he’s trying to stick his down her throat.
I contemplate rushing them while they’re distracted, but there’s no way I could take two of them. When they eventually come up for air, he looks over at me with hunger in his eyes. The eyes of a predator sensing its prey.
“How about we have some fun with her right now?” he says to Veronica.
“Oh, Brute, you bad boy,” she giggles, “Soon. First, we gotta find out if she’s really knocked up and then see how much more Bill’s willing to pay. After all, we’ve either gotta keep her alive for however many months she’s got to go and deliver a baby, or it’s the price of killing two people, so that’s gonna cost him.”
I feel sick. So it’s true. Bill organized this and he wants me dead. I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that these monsters are considering keeping me alive just long enough to give birth before killing an innocent baby’s mother, or that they’re willing to murder a pregnant woman, so long as they get paid more.
“You’re monsters,” I say looking at them both in horror.
“Don’t you forget it missy,” the man who I now know is called Brute says, cracking his knuckles.
"Go on now Brute, baby, this is girl’s business. It’ll make it much harder and take longer than it needs to with you here making her nervous. I’ll watch her to make sure she does the test properly,” Veronica says, giving him a peck. He hesitates, eyeing me suspiciously so she adds, “I’ll be fine. If she tries anything funny, I’ve got lil’ Bessie. So you can drop whatever it is you're hiding behind your back, missy,” she says narrowing her eyes at me, removing a small pistol from her purse—lil Bessie I assume—and pointing it at me.
I hold my hands up, allowing the pen to fall to the floor.
“See she ain’t gonna do shit,” Veronica sneers.
“Alright then, I’ll be just in the other room if you ladies need me,” Brute agrees before looking at me one last time, “Remember Miss Blue Skye, I’ll enjoy making you do as you’re told if you don’t listen to my old lady,” he says before handing the keys to Veronica and leaving.
“How could you do this? I knew you were a bitch, but this is some next-level shit,” I say to Veronica.
“Shut up and go in the bathroom,” she hisses, pointing the pistol toward the door.
With little other choice, I do as I’m told. She shuts the door behind us, shutting us both in the cramped bathroom. I open my mouth to start giving her a piece of my mind, but she shushes me, turns on the faucet so the water comes loudly streaming out, and speaks before I can utter a word, her voice in a whisper.
“Look. I don’t have enough time for me to explain. Angel and the others sent me.”
“Wait… what?” I reply, confused.
“Shut up and listen or you’ll get us both killed,” she scalds. “Here’s your options. The guys are waiting nearby with their men, they can storm this place and get you out and take down the men here, including Brute the president of the Demon Riders. But your stepdad wants you dead. He won’t stop coming for you unless we stop him too and he’s staying as far away from all this as possible. Do you want him to pay for what he’s done?”
“Of course, but…”
She interrupts me again. “Then you need to follow my instructions exactly. You’re gonna take this pregnancy test and hope to god it’s positive,” she says pulling a test from her purse. “If it isn’t I can fake it with a biro, hopefully, Brute will buy it. Then, Brute and I will call your dear old stepdad, and I’ll record our conversation. He should incriminate himself enough for us to send him away for a long, long time.”
“Then what? How do we get out of here?” I ask.
I’m not sure whether or not I can trust Veronica right now. If she’s been dating the president of the Demon Riders MC, she could be saying all this as some sort of sick game or as a way to make me do as she’s asking without putting up a fight.
“We pretend I’m taking you back to this room and I leave it open and distract Brute, giving you time to escape. If shit hits the fan, I just need to give the signal to your knights in shining armor to come rescue their damsel in distress.”
“How do I know I can trust you?”
“You don’t,” she replies with a shrug. “But the way I see it, I’m the only option you’ve got hon.”
She’s right. I’m shit out of luck and by some cruel irony, my life is in the hands of the woman who hates me and made me lose the four men I love.
“Fine,” I say, snatching the pregnancy test off her and proceeding to follow the instructions on the box. “We have to wait for two minutes for a result. Surely now you can explain what the fuck is going on,” I snip.
She raises an eyebrow, “Just because I don’t want you dead, doesn’t mean I wanna risk my life saving you. If someone overhears us talking, we’re done for,” she replies dryly, turning off the faucet.
We sit in silence awaiting the results, my mind filled with tumultuous thoughts wondering how Veronica fits into all of this and if Angel, Drifter, Buzz, and Gunner are really waiting to rescue me outside. And if they are, does that mean they’ve forgiven me?
Veronica checks her watch and picks up the test, “Well… I’ll be damned… you really are knocked up.”
“I’m pregnant? Really?” I say, snatching the test from her, the two lines are clear.
There’s no doubt about it. I’m pregnant.
