Chapter 23

twenty-three

Wren

Wren checks outside the window as he returns the dirty dishes.

Not much longer. The snow is disappearing more every day.

But it is clear Xenia is coming to the end of her heat. Her needs are becoming sporadic, and she has been gaining more clarity throughout.

But how can I take her from my pack? She is one of us now. They will hate me. She even smells of us. Especially Luther. As if he is already a part of her.

Wren’s attention catches on a photo on the wall.

It’s the first day he held Charles in his arms. He was hardly twenty and didn’t know what he was signing up for, but he didn’t hesitate when Luther brought it to him.

They had only recently agreed to become pack mates.

Barely adults themselves, and yet, they all stepped up.

Made it work. Sacrificed having an omega to raise Charles.

He always comes first. That is the promise.

Wren heaves a long painful sigh before running a hand through his long blond hair. His fingers catch on a tangle, and it startles him.

She’s already changing him.

And it terrifies him.

But a deeper part recognizes that he has already half-way fallen for her.

I have to take her away, but it won’t be forever.

She will return.

She has to.

Wren stands still in crippling and debilitating agony as he allows his emotions to flood him. This is the last thing he wants to do.

But she agreed, it’s for the best. Vinny will come for her here. I can take her somewhere safer.

That’s what pushes his decision forward.

She will be safer if I take her away.

It is that thought alone that allows him to solidify his intent.

With his feet unfrozen, he allows them to take him to the omega.

My Omega.
