Safe Breaker
Kelya
Lying in bed when you don’t want to is the worst.
Tony takes forever getting out of the room.
I’m pretending I’m still sleeping as he casually updates his log book, reads his emails, texts someone and chuckles at their replies—which irritates me irrationally—and then finally gets his wallet, puts on his shoes, and leaves, but not before checking on me.
As soon as the door snicks shut, I jump out of bed, happy to have a moment to myself. I want to take a long shower, drink my cafecito on the balcony, and listen to the growing traffic and crowds. Last night made me feel a little too relaxed. A little too good.
The power of Tony’s dick.
There’s a familiar ping from my phone, indicating my mother has emailed me.
I fumble around until I find it plugged in and on the nightstand. Sure enough, an email from my mother sits at the top of my notifications. I’d love to possess enough strong will in order to ignore it, but I don’t. I sit on the edge of the bed and brace for impact.

Kelya,
Oh my god! This is great news!! Roman updated the family on your return dates!
You’ll have to tell me your heat schedule so I can make sure we are not going to run into it.
Is it happening soon? Just curious. If it is, come home now and have it with your alphas.
They miss you. Nothing better than a homecoming heat with the men of your dreams. Omegas need to be with their alphas for their heat.
Maybe you’ll get pregnant this time! We could start planning when a little girl is going to join us. Another family in our clan had a baby boy, and he’ll be a good alpha one day. Maybe we can start getting them together. How great would that be if they were scent matches?
I know you always complained about housework, so we encouraged your alphas to bond with that strange beta they always have around, Ash.
He’s an odd one. He cooks and cleans, though, so that’s good for you.
Just stay away from him for a while when you come back.
You don’t want to make your alphas jealous. I know how you like the weird guys.
I’m so excited to see you again. Don’t worry about being punished for your extended trip away, Kelya. Nothing will be sweeter than your reunion.
Love,
Mom
P.S. Roman’s nose doesn’t look as bad as it did when you left. He had surgery recently by a very expensive plastic surgeon, and now looks just as handsome as he did before you hurt him. He will tell you about it when you’re here.
I drop the phone onto the rug then rush to the bathroom to wretch my stomach inside out.
I can’t do this. My mother is a delusional nut job.
I can’t believe I was raised by her. I’m not on a fucking trip!
I left them! Not once, ever, in the last two years have I indicated I would ever return, and she just keeps doing this—rewriting reality to fit her delusional desires.
Why does she keep talking about me having a daughter?
A daughter I will have to name after my dead sister, I guess.
I throw up again, and it’s constricting my stomach, and nothing comes out.
I would be damned if my daughter was forced to be with some alpha from their clan. I’m sure he’ll be just like Roman. I would never let my daughter near a man like Roman. I’d bite his nose off, too.
And the beta.
I remember Ash, a tall, solemn faced young man with knowing eyes. Like he could tell you the day and the way you may die in the future. My horrible mother is right—I did kind of have a thing for him. He looked like he knew how to go down on a girl.
I shake my head. I’m not going to fuck the beta. I don’t have a daughter. I’m not on an extended trip. I will not be having a heat with the Livingstons!
I won’t go back.
My ire turns towards Tony, the private dick who is going to tie me up in his knots and bring me back to them.
He’s good. He got me thinking about drinking a cafecito on his balcony, reminiscing about the dicking I got last night, instead of what I really should be thinking about: getting away from him. That absolute asshole. Motherfucker.
I fluff my hair and sit up straight.
I’m not letting this happen.
The hotel safe sits on the floor in the closet, and as I crawl over to it, I know how to get in since Rodrigo already helped me when mine suddenly locked me out. I input the skeleton passcode, and it opens right up to reveal a handgun, a magazine of ammunition, a bottle of scent blockers, and cash.
I press and twist the lid of the pills, choke back a handful of them, then put it back exactly where I found it. If Tony wants to smell me, he can do it in hell.
The man will be back any second. I don’t know where he went, but there’s no way he’ll leave me here alone for long. He’s not stupid, unfortunately. So far, he hasn’t taken to reason or seduction. Maybe he’ll respond to force.
I pick up the gun. It’s a Glock 19 with a full magazine sitting next to it.
I slide them together and slam the bottom for that satisfying click.
It’s heavy now, and I test out the weight, moving on my knees to face the front door.
I do a quick check and don’t see a safety switch.
It’s a gun a cop would have. Guess they don’t have safeties.
Oddly the slide is already pulled back, and the trigger is engaged. It’s all ready to go.
I wait with my arm extended, both hands on the handle and my finger on the trigger. The gun is pointed right where his torso will be. I don’t know what kind of aim I have, since I’ve never shot a man, so I have to aim for the biggest target.
