SHORT STORIES 6 #2

The pull-off was a gravel half-circle under a stand of pines. Ethan parked, shut off the engine, and waited while she parked beside him. When she got out, the air felt cooler in the shade. He sat on the open tailgate of his truck, boots on the bumper, leaving space.

Holly stayed standing at first. "If this is the part where you turn into a problem, I should warn you I scream very effectively."

"If I turn into a problem, you should do worse than scream," he said. "I asked you here because I like the way you argue and because you are ridiculously beautiful when you are annoyed. That is the whole agenda unless you add to it."

She studied his face. No smirk of conquest. Just heat under control. Holly stepped closer until she stood between his knees. Even seated on the tailgate, he was nearly eye level with her.

"I am twenty-two," she said. "I am not confused about what I am doing. I am also not interested in being handled like a novelty because I am short."

"Understood. You are not a novelty. You are a person who happens to fit under my chin, which I find extremely distracting."

She laughed despite herself. The laugh loosened something in her chest. "You are very large."

"I have been told."

"And very sure of yourself."

"Less sure than I sound. I nearly kept driving after the tire."

"Why did you not?"

"Because you looked furious and capable at the same time, and I wanted to know which one would win if I stayed."

Holly put her hands on his thighs for balance, feeling solid muscle under denim. "Capable is winning so far."

"Good." His hands settled lightly at her waist, waiting there, not pulling. "May I kiss you?"

"Yes."

He kissed her like a man who meant the question.

Slow at first, then deeper when she opened for him and rose onto her toes.

One of his hands slid up her back, broad and warm, careful of pressure.

Holly made a soft sound into his mouth that surprised her.

She had been kissed before. She had not been kissed by someone who made her feel this surrounded and still free.

When they broke apart, her breath was uneven. "That was better than the warning ticket."

"High praise."

She hesitated, then climbed carefully onto the tailgate beside him, knees angled toward his. The truck bed was high enough that her feet dangled. Ethan watched her with open appreciation and still did not rush.

"I should tell you something before this goes further," Holly said. "I have done some things. Not everything. If we keep going, I want it to be because we both want it, not because I am trying to prove a point about being small or brave."

Ethan's expression softened. "Then we do not prove points. We check in. You say stop, we stop. You say slower, we slow. Same for me."

"Same for you," she repeated, and meant it.

He kissed her again. This time her hands found his shoulders, then the back of his neck. When his palm skimmed her side and paused at the hem of her top, he waited until she nodded. Only then did he slide his hand under the fabric, warm against her bare skin. Holly shivered, not from cold.

"Still good?" he asked against her mouth.

"Still good."

He touched her with patience that made the heat worse, not better. When she tugged her own top upward and off, it was her decision, made with clear eyes and a racing pulse. Ethan's breath left him in a rough exhale.

"Holly."

"I know what I look like," she said, chin up, cheeks flushed. "You can look. You can touch if you ask."

"May I?"

"Yes."

His hands were huge against her, gentle in a way that made her stomach tighten.

He cupped her breasts like he was learning them, thumbs brushing until her nipples hardened and she had to grip his shirt.

Pleasure rolled through her in bright, unfamiliar waves.

She pressed closer, half in his lap now, skirt riding up her thighs.

"Tell me what you want," he said.

"More. Not everything yet. More."

He nodded, kissed down her throat, and took his time.

Holly lost track of the road and the village and Ryan's warning about tickets.

There was only the pine shade, the solid heat of Ethan, and the growing ache between her legs when his hand stroked up her inner thigh and stopped at the edge of her underwear.

"Yes," she whispered before he asked. "Touch me."

He did, through fabric first, then beneath it when she shifted to give him room.

Holly buried her face against his shoulder and breathed hard as his fingers found her wet and ready.

He circled carefully, learning what made her hips move, never forcing.

When she came, it surprised her with its force, a sharp bright uncoiling that left her shaking against him and laughing breathlessly into his shirt.

Ethan held her through it, forehead against her hair. "You all right?"

"I am very all right." She lifted her head. Her smile was dazed and real. "That was... more than I expected from a roadside rescue."

"Best flat tire of my life."

She glanced down at the obvious strain in his jeans and felt a fresh pulse of want mixed with nerves. "I want to take care of you too. Not all the way. Not here. Not yet. But I want my hands on you."

His jaw flexed. "Only if you want that for you, not as payment."

"I want it."

She unzipped him with more confidence than she felt and wrapped her hand around him.

He was thick, heavy, bigger than her experience had prepared her for, and the sound he made when she stroked him went straight through her.

Holly watched his face while she worked him, learning pressure from every breath he took.

When he came, he groaned her name and held her hip like an anchor, careful even then not to crush her.

Afterward they sat quiet for a while, fixing clothes with awkward soft laughter. Holly pulled her top back on. Ethan fastened his jeans. The world returned in pieces: birds, distant wind, the faint smell of warm pine.

"I should get back before someone decides I have driven off a cliff," Holly said.

"Give me your number," Ethan said. "If you want to. No pressure, no assumptions about tonight or next week. I would like to see you again when we both have a door and a bed and time."

She took his phone, typed her number, and sent herself a message so she had his. "I work Monday. Ryan will ask why I look suspiciously well rested if I am late."

"Tell Ryan you met a man who can change a tire."

"Ryan will demand details and then regret asking."

Ethan hopped down first, then set his hands at her waist and lifted her to the ground as if she weighed nothing. He did not make a joke of it. He just set her on her feet and kept his hands there until she steadied.

"Chapter of the day ends here," he said. "Unless you want to follow me to town for actual food."

Holly considered, then shook her head with a regretful smile. "Food sounds good. Food also sounds like I will end up in your passenger seat making worse decisions before I have thought them through. Rain check."

"Rain check," he agreed. "Text me when you are home safe."

"I will."

She kissed him once more, brief and certain, then got into her convertible. As she pulled out, she saw him in the mirror still standing by his truck, one hand raised in a wave that this time was not smug at all.

On the drive back toward the city, Holly kept under the limit. Mostly. Her phone buzzed once at a red light near the edge of town.

Ethan: Home stretch. Still thinking about you in the pines.

Holly: Still thinking about you not gloating. Progress.

Ethan: I can gloat quietly. Dinner tomorrow if you are free?

Holly: I am free. And Ethan?

Ethan: Yeah?

Holly: Next time, I want the door and the bed and the time.

She set the phone down, smiled into the wind, and drove on with the afternoon light on her bare arms and the clear knowledge that she had chosen every step of what just happened.

Somewhere downtown, Ryan Park was probably still at his desk finishing a report and assuming his short coworker was out driving too fast again. He was half right. Holly had driven too fast. She had also stopped, on purpose, for something much more interesting.

Holly texted Ryan on Saturday morning before she could talk herself out of honesty.

Holly: Do not ask why. If I am late Monday, cover for me on the nine o'clock stand-up.

Ryan: That is the most suspicious message you have ever sent. Are you dead. Are you in jail. Did the convertible finally win.

Holly: I am alive, not in jail, and the car is fine. I have a date tonight.

Ryan: A date. You. Voluntarily. With a human person.

Holly: Yes. His name is Ethan. He is tall. He changed my tire. That is all you get.

Ryan: That is not all I get. That is the trailer. I want the movie Monday. Be safe. Text me if you need an exit call.

Holly: Thank you. I will be fine.

She spent the afternoon pretending to be calm.

She cleaned her apartment twice. She changed outfits three times and settled on a soft black dress that fit her properly, bought months earlier from a shop that actually carried her size.

Heels would have been a lie. She wore low sandals and left her hair down.

Ethan messaged at six.

Ethan: Still good for seven? I can pick you up, or meet you there. Your choice.

Holly: Pick me up. I want to see if you fit in my building elevator.

Ethan: I usually take the stairs for that exact reason. Address?

She sent it. At six fifty-five the intercom buzzed. When she opened her apartment door, Ethan filled the frame in a dark button-down and black jeans, clean-shaven, looking somehow even larger indoors. He looked at her for a long second without speaking.

"Hi," Holly said.

"Hi." His voice was quiet. "You look like trouble I want to get into carefully."

"Good answer." She locked up and walked with him to the elevator.

He did fit, barely, and the mirrored walls made the size difference impossible to ignore.

Holly caught their reflection and felt heat climb her throat.

She looked tiny beside him. She also looked like a woman who had chosen to be exactly where she was.

Dinner was at a low-lit Italian place with booths deep enough for long legs.

Ethan ordered pasta. Holly ordered the same because deciding felt harder than usual.
