SHORT STORIES 9 #3
"I came hard, Thomas. Harder than I expected. My whole body tightened around his fingers. I made a long sound into my wrist. My thighs shook. I got very wet, enough that I felt it on the paper under me. Afterward I was embarrassed and said I was sorry for making a mess. Dr.
Ward said there was nothing to apologize for. He removed his fingers slowly, checked me once more with his eyes, and said everything looked perfect."
I sat there throbbing under the table, half out of my mind. The men behind her were silent as stone.
"And the student?" I asked.
"He looked like he might pass out," she said.
"Dr. Ward asked him if he understood the response pattern. The student nodded but could barely speak. Then Dr. Ward said that if I was willing, the student could perform a brief supervised palpation of the outer tissue only, so he would know normal texture by touch. Outer tissue only.
No penetration from him. I thought about it and said yes, with gloves, and only for a short time."
"You let him touch you."
"Professionally," she said at once. "He put gloves on. His hands were shaking. Dr. Ward guided him. The student touched my outer lips very lightly at first, then with a little more confidence. He said I felt soft and warm. Dr. Ward corrected his hand position once.
The student apologized three times. I told him he was doing fine."
She smiled a little, the same smile she uses when she helps someone carry groceries.
"When he finished, he stepped back so fast he almost hit the counter. There was a dark spot on the front of his pants. I pretended not to see it. No one needs extra shame during training."
I rubbed a hand over my face. "Beatrice. You are going to kill me."
"Do not be dramatic," she said gently. "It was medicine."
"It was the hottest thing I have ever heard," I said. "But keep going. How did it end?"
"Dr. Ward cleaned the gel with warm cloths. He was careful and polite. He helped me sit up. My legs still felt weak. He told me to dress when I was ready and said he would step out with the student for a moment to give me privacy. Before they left,
he thanked me for being so cooperative and for allowing the teaching moment. The student thanked me too, voice cracking. I told them both they were welcome."
"Then I got dressed," she said. "The sundress felt different against my skin after that. More noticeable. I was still a little sensitive. In the hallway I paid the forty dollars for the mole check and signed something for the free full exam. The receptionist congratulated me on catching the special.
I felt proud of that part."
She picked up her fork again as if the story had reached a normal conclusion.
"So that is how I saved a hundred dollars," she said. "And my mole is fine, and my full skin check is done for the year. Efficient, right?"
I laughed under my breath, stunned. "Efficient is one word for it."
Beatrice tilted her head. "You are looking at me strangely. Are you upset?"
"No," I said. "I am not upset. I am very, very far from upset."
"Good." She relaxed. "Because I almost did not tell you all the details. I was afraid you might think I had done something improper. But nothing improper happened. I consented to every step. They were careful. I was never forced. I could have stopped at any time.
I simply chose to complete the exam and help a student learn."
"I believe you," I said. And I did. That was part of the electricity of it. Beatrice truly believed she had spent the morning being practical, healthy, and kind.
I leaned closer. "Did you enjoy any of it?"
She considered the question with real seriousness.
"I enjoyed knowing I was taking care of my health," she said. "I enjoyed saving the money. The orgasm was unexpected, but it felt good physically. I would not book an appointment just for that. Still, if a proper exam includes a response test, I understand why the body reacts."
"Of course you do," I said.
Our waiter came by and asked if we wanted dessert.
Beatrice ordered a small tiramisu to share.
The men behind her finally signaled for their check with quick, stiff movements.
When they stood up to leave, both of them glanced at Beatrice.
One looked almost grateful. The other looked wrecked.
Beatrice smiled politely at them the way she smiles at everyone.
She had no idea they had heard every word.
After they left, I reached under the table and took her hand.
"I need you to know something," I said. "Listening to you tell that story turned me on more than anything has in a long time."
Her cheeks pinked. "Really?"
"Really."
"Even the parts with the student watching?"
"Especially those parts," I said. "And the part where you came on the table. And the part where you thanked them."
Beatrice bit her lower lip, thoughtful rather than scandalized.
"I suppose some husbands would be jealous," she said.
"I am not jealous," I said. "I am proud of how calm you stayed. And I am going to think about this for weeks."
She squeezed my fingers. "Then I am glad I told you. Communication is important."
The tiramisu arrived. She fed me the first bite without any sense of irony, as if we had been talking about insurance paperwork. Under the table my body was still wound tight.
"There is one more thing," she said after a minute.
"What?"
"Dr. Ward suggested a follow-up in six months for another full check, just to stay consistent. He said I could request the same teaching format if a student is available. I told him I would think about it and talk to you."
My pulse jumped again. "And what do you want to do?"
"I want to keep my skin healthy," she said simply. "If a student needs practice and you are comfortable with it, I do not mind helping again. As long as it remains professional and I am never pressured."
"You set the terms," I said. "Always. Consent every time. You can stop every time."
"I know." She smiled. "That is why I felt safe today."
We finished dessert slowly. Beatrice talked about vacation flights and a hotel with a balcony.
I nodded at the right moments while my mind replayed every image she had given me: the sundress on the hook, the heels on the exam step, Dr. Ward's gloved hands, the student's stunned face, my wife shaking through a climax she still called data.
When the bill came, she insisted on paying her half because of the money she had saved at the clinic. I let her. It made her happy.
Outside, the afternoon light was bright and ordinary. People walked past with shopping bags and phones. Beatrice slipped her arm through mine and rested her head against my shoulder for a second.
"Thank you for lunch," she said. "And for listening without making me feel dirty."
"You are not dirty," I said. "You are astonishing."
She laughed softly. "I am just me."
"That is what I mean."
We walked toward the car. Halfway there she stopped and looked up at me with a mischievous glint I rarely see.
"Thomas," she said. "When we get home, do you want me to put the blue dress back on with nothing underneath and tell you the whole story again, slower?"
I kissed her right there on the sidewalk, careful and deep.
"Yes," I said. "I want that. And this time I am going to touch you while you tell it."
Her eyes widened a little, then warmed.
"All right," she said. "But if you get too excited and interrupt, I will lose my place."
"I will risk it."
In the car she checked her phone, answered a message from a friend about dinner plans next week, and hummed along with the radio.
To anyone passing our windows she would have looked like the sweetest, most ordinary woman in the city.
Only I knew what she had done that morning.
Only I knew how freely she had offered her body to a clinical room under the banner of health and helpfulness.
Only I knew how wet she had gotten on that table, and how politely she had thanked the men who watched her come.
At a red light I put my hand on her bare knee where the sundress had ridden up.
"Beatrice," I said.
"Yes?"
"You really have no idea how sexy you are."
She glanced at me, puzzled and fond.
"I am just clean and prepared," she said. "That is different."
I smiled and left my hand where it was.
"If you say so."
She covered my hand with hers and laced our fingers together.
"I do say so," she answered. "And tomorrow I am going to look for another way to save money. Maybe not at the doctor. That might be hard to top."
"Please," I said, half laughing, half desperate, "do not top that too soon. I need time to recover."
Beatrice gave me a serene little shrug.
"No promises," she said. "If a good special appears, I would be silly not to take it."
The light turned green. I drove us home through ordinary traffic, already aching for the moment the front door closed behind us.
In my head the day kept replaying in bright, impossible detail: my innocent wife in a blue dress, saving a hundred dollars, and rewriting every private fantasy I thought I already knew by heart.
When we pulled into the driveway, she unbuckled her seatbelt, leaned over, and kissed the corner of my mouth.
"Chapter closed on the clinic," she whispered. "Now you get the private version."
I shut off the engine.
"Lead the way," I said.
She did, hips swaying under that soft blue fabric, completely unaware of the show she was giving me, and completely willing, when the time came, to give me every last detail again with my hands on her skin and my name on her breath.
That night, long after she fell asleep against my chest, I lay awake thinking about consent, trust, and the strange electric gift of a wife who can walk naked into a room full of professional eyes and still believe the purest story about why she is there.
I loved her for that. I desired her for that.
And I knew, with absolute certainty, that the next time Dr. Ward's office called about a six month follow up, Beatrice would answer the phone in that same sweet voice and ask, quite sincerely, whether students were still welcome to learn.
