Chapter Twenty #2
Elsie starts gushing about finally getting a date with Marcia, even if I am a bit suspicious that Marcia is up to something. She’s never shown any interest in Elsie before now. I don’t even think she’s shown any interest in girls before. I don’t say anything to Elsie though, since she’s so excited.
Jasper walks us to where Frost is waiting. He looks as excited as he would be if he were going for a prostate exam.
“Look after them tonight, Frost,” Jasper instructs.
“We have an order from Mr Branson…” I snort. Mr Branson? I highly doubt Baxter would want to be known as a mister!
“The order is for both of us to stay with the girls tonight.”
“What? Why?” Jasper looks pretty pissed to have his night off revoked.
“He is...cautious that Marcia would want to date Elsie.”
Damn him, Elsie’s face drops.
“Why wouldn’t she want to date me?” Elsie asks in a hurt voice.
“She would be stupid not to Els, you’re hot as fuck.” I jump to her defence, shooting daggers at Frost for being an insensitive wanker. “Baxter just wants an excuse to be an asshole, despite his absence.”
“You’re damn right I am.” Elsie smiles, lifting her chin.
“And you’re right. His assholeness hasn’t been around to hand out his comments for a while now.
” She giggles flipping her long blonde hair over her shoulder and linking arms with Jasper.
Frost gives him a stern look and Jasper just shrugs and leads the way with Elsie on his arm, suddenly looking less annoyed at the prospect of having to work on his night off.
That leaves me and Frost trailing behind.
He shoots me a glare as if to say ‘don’t even think about it’ and I snort.
I would never want to go there with him.
It’s one thing to use Jasper’s age, build, and hotness factor to make the guys jealous, another to try to do that with an old man like Frost.
The party is in full swing when we arrive, another Knox party for sure. I could tell by how busy it is, even if the location wasn’t a dead giveaway. I’m pissed none of them personally invited me.
What do you expect, Amelie, you don’t want them, remember? Yeah, I just need to keep that mantra on repeat for the next three years and we’ll be good. Maybe I should get it tattooed on my forehead as a deterrent for all the stupid decisions I want to make where they’re concerned.
Elsie spots Marcia from across the room and races off. Jasper says he’ll tail her tonight. He leaves Frost to me and winks as he goes. I know it’s his reminder that he wants me to get sloppy drunk, and I plan to do just that. I need to drink away my emotions so I can meet Slate later.
‘Too Good’ by Drake ft. Rhianna is blasting through the speakers when Kalen approaches.
“Drink, sis,” he says, handing me some blue concoction.
“Not your sister,” I snap, taking the drink from him.
“May as well be, you don’t want much else to do with me anymore.” He pouts. I can hear the slight slur in his words.
I swallow the blue drink down in one go, the cloying sweetness sliding down my throat tasting like pure sugar. I pull a face. I am not sweetness and light, but I think the foul cocktail will serve its purpose in getting me wasted.
“Keep these coming, and tonight we can forget I’m pissed at you.” His face lights up and he races away to fetch me another drink like an eager little puppy. My phone buzzes from my pocket and I pull it out to check.
Sawyer
I miss you so damn much
I type out a quick reply.
Amelie
I miss you too :( sucks not seeing you everyday
Sawyer
I will be thinking of you until I see you
Maybe I can sneak you out tomorrow?
Amelie
I have orders to get sloppy drunk, so a sneaky greasy breakfast could work. I have missed your English fry ups!
Sawyer
Done. Consider it a date. Have fun tonight but be safe x
I put my phone away. Frost eyes me cautiously as we start heading towards the DJ controlling the music. Though by DJ, I mean some kid that has been put in charge of keeping the music flowing throughout the night.
Frost stands to the side as I walk behind the makeshift DJ set up and the guy smiles at me.
“What can I help you with?” His tone is tight; he knows who I am, hates me for what I did, but knows that this is a Knox party and he isn’t about to risk their wrath.
“Can you play some more pop stuff? My friend really loves Justin Bieber.” I point my thumb at Frost. The guy raises a brow at me sceptically; Frost is dressed in a suit, with an earpiece and a gun strapped to his side.
“I don’t…” He is cut off by Kalen’s presence.
“Play whatever my sister wants, and remember who she is.” Kalen’s tone makes the guy jump into action and ‘What Do You Mean’ by Justin Bieber starts to play. Kalen smirks at me.
“I didn’t take you as a Biebs fan.”
I just shrug, taking the drink he holds out for me. I swallow it down and he wordlessly hands me another one.
“Frost, let’s dance,” I shout over the music.
“Unlikely, Miss,” he answers with a scowl.
“I don’t think that was a request, Frost. You’re paid to do whatever you’re told. I might loathe the ground Branson walks on, but we have one thing we always agree on, and that is her safety. So unless you want to experience the namesake he lives up to, I suggest you do what she asks.”
Frost looks about ready to murder Kalen so I drag him to the dance floor.
I’m not sure why Frost didn’t want to dance.
When the music switches to a Selena Gomez song I feel eyes on me and I look up to meet Onyx’s hate-filled glare, which penetrates my entire body.
Goosebumps spread across my skin, but nothing happens.
He simply glares at me for a moment before disappearing into the crowd.
The night continues on in the same manner: Kalen brings me drinks and I down them. We dance. He flirts. I’m yet to see Slate, but Onyx bores holes through me all night long. I feel his hate burning my hot skin even when I can’t actually see him.
I drag Frost to dance with me a few more times, just to piss them all off.
Frost might be in his thirties or more, but the guy knows how to seduce a woman with his moves.
Elsie has come to find me a few times and tell me how excited she is.
I don’t buy it. I watch her when she races off, and Marcia barely seems to acknowledge her presence most of the time.
If that bitch hurts my bestie, I’ll neck her without restraint or regret.
I need to rest for a minute. I head towards a table by the wall, stumbling over my own feet as I go. Frost catches me. “I think it might be time to go, Miss,” he suggests.
“I think you’re right, Frosty. Ha! Frosty the snowman.”
He scowls at my new nickname for him, but says nothing, choosing instead to try to stand me upright. I stumble over my own damn feet again. Kalen tries to offer to help, but I shoo him away.
“Piggyback me, Frosty, it’ll be fun!”
Kalen laughs as Frost huffs, yet as Kalen helps me on to Frost’s back, Frost slides an arm under my ass to keep me supported.
“Byeeee,” I slur to Kalen. He looks undecided if he’s going to let me leave with my bodyguard or if he’s going to follow me.
“It’s fine; I have to find Slate.”
Kalen nods and lets us leave. Frost heads outside and says something to Jasper through the ear thingy.
“To the old library! Quickly!” I shout. He doesn’t go faster, he takes us towards our destination pausing every few minutes when I start to fall down his back. “Giddy up, Frosty the horseman!”
