CHAPTER FIVE #3

The second had a half-second more. He felt the first one drop and started to turn, got a forearm up, a fist halfway raised, and none of it mattered because Knox was already inside the reach of it where the fist couldn't get the room to do anything.

Two short hits to the body, low, that he felt land on something soft that gave under them, and the man's guard dropped to cover it as a body always will, and the third hit went to the side of his head and put him into the van's door and slid him down it to the ground.

The one holding Zola felt the math change behind him — two men down in the time it takes to drop a glass — and he shoved her hard at Knox to buy himself room and went for his waistband.

That was the one. That was the one whose hand had closed on her arm, whose fingers had left the red marks Knox would see later and not be able to stop seeing.

Knox put Zola behind him with one arm and was on the man before the gun cleared the band, caught the wrist, and broke it across his own raised knee with a sound like green wood going.

The gun hit the concrete and spun under a car.

The man went down screaming around the ruin of his arm, and Knox put a knee in his back and pinned him to the oil-stained floor and held him there.

And here was the thing. Here was the thing he would not be able to scrub out of himself later.

It felt good.

Not the fear, not the love, not the need to get her clear — those were all there, roaring.

Underneath them was the other thing. The flat cold satisfaction of being exactly as good at a task as twenty years of training had made him, the clean economy of a wrist and a knee and a jaw, three problems solved in the time most men would still be deciding to be afraid.

It was the most familiar feeling he owned.

And it wore his father's face. He'd watched his old man get that same quiet out of the same kind of work, watched it from a corner of a kitchen when he was small enough to fit under the table, the awful peace that came over a violent man in the middle of being violent.

That's all those are good for, the old voice told him, gentle as a hand on the head.

That's the only thing in you worth a damn.

Look how good you are at it. Look whose hands you've got.

He had the man's broken wrist in one fist and his other hand was a fist too, drawn back, and the man was done, the man was no threat, and Knox held there for a half-second on the edge of a thing he didn't need to do — a thing that wasn't protecting anybody anymore, a thing that was just for him — and that half-second was the closest he ever came to being the thing he was most afraid of.

There was no reason left to hit him. The man was pinned and broken and no danger to anybody.

Hitting him again wouldn't make Zola one inch safer.

It would only feed the cold thing the meal it was asking for, and the cold thing was asking, patient and certain, as it had a hundred times on a hundred worse nights when there'd been no one to stop him giving in.

Then he heard her say his name.

Not screaming it. Not afraid of it. Just level, the same voice she'd use to tell a patient the needle was coming.

"Knox." Only his name, in her voice, from a few feet away, and it went down into the cold deep place where the other part of him lived and did the one thing nobody had ever been able to do down there.

It turned a light on. The cold thing blinked in it and lost its certainty.

For the first time in his life the place he went to do the bad work had a window in it, and her voice was coming through it, and the man came back up toward the sound of it like a diver toward the surface.

He let the fist down and let the wrist go.

He stood up off the man and stepped back, and he kept his face turned away from her while he did it, because the one line he would not cross — the only one left that mattered — was letting her see what had been in his face a second ago.

Letting her see the part that liked it. Letting her look at him and find his father looking back.

He got his breathing down. He made himself ordinary again. Three men on the ground, one crawling, two not moving much. No gun fired. The war not started, only fed. He turned around with his charm welded back into place and his eyes flat and safe.

She was standing there with her bag still on her shoulder and her chest heaving and a red mark coming up on her arm where they'd held her, and she was looking at him.

He waited for it. The recoil. The recalculation. The door her body would start to plan.

She crossed the three feet between them and took his hands.

Both of them. The right one split open again over the old gauze, the left already swelling, blood on his knuckles that wasn't all his, and she turned them over and held them in hers in the middle of that concrete garage with three groaning men around their feet, and she looked up at him, and her eyes were wet and clear and not one degree afraid.

"There you are," she said, like she'd been looking for him in there and found him.

His whole chest cracked down the middle. He'd braced for every version of this moment over seven years of imagining it and none of his versions had her stepping toward the violence instead of away from it. None of them had her reaching for the hands that had just done what these had done.

"You came," she said. "You always come. These hands came and got me.

" She lifted them, the ruined hands, and set her lips to his torn right knuckles, the same place she'd kissed two nights back, and Knox stood in the place he'd spent his whole life believing made him a monster and let the woman he loved kiss the proof of it like it was a thing worth saving.

"They're not what he told you they were.

You hear me? Whatever your daddy put in your head about what's in 'em.

I just watched what's in 'em. It came forty yards to get me and it stopped the second I was safe.

That's not him, Darius. That's the furthest thing from him there is. "

He couldn't speak. He'd put three men on the ground without his pulse going over a hundred and he could not get one single word up his throat.

Everything he'd ever been told about himself and everything she was telling him now were standing in the same small space refusing to fit, and the only thing his body knew to do about it was hold very still and let her keep being right.

So he did the only thing he had. He turned his hands in hers so he was holding her instead, mindful of his own raw knuckles against her skin, and he held on, in the wreckage, in the open, where anyone could see — and the part of him that liked the violence sat down, quiet, for once outvoted by the part of him that had just been called the furthest thing from his father there is, by the one person whose vote he'd ever counted.

Somewhere a level down a car alarm was going.

Up here it was just the three of them standing in a spreading quiet, and the three men on the ground, one curled around a wrist that would never set quite right, two who'd be a while waking up to how their day had gone.

None of them would talk to a cop. Men who walked women into vans for a living didn't file reports.

But concrete carried sound, and somebody in this structure had heard something, and the clock on standing here had already started.

"We gotta go," he said finally, wrecked. "Before somebody calls it in."

"I know."

"You're hurt."

"It's a bruise. I've had worse from a blood pressure cuff." She didn't let go of him. "Are you?"

And there it was again, the question that took him apart every time, the one nobody else in his life had ever thought to ask in that order. Not are they down. Not are we clear. Are you.

"No," he lied, and got her to the car.

He drove them out of the structure the long way and watched the mirror the whole time and didn't say much, because there wasn't much that would survive being said out loud yet.

She didn't fill the quiet. She sat in the passenger seat with her bruised arm cradled in her lap and her eyes on the side of his face, and every few blocks her hand would reach over and rest on his thigh, not asking for anything, just there, a weight that said still here, still not afraid, and each time she did it some piece of the cold thing in him loosened another notch and let a little more of the ordinary world back in.

By the time they reached the Forge he could feel his own hands hurting again, which was its own kind of mercy.

Hurting meant they were back to being just hands.

The footage reached Bishop by nightfall.

Zola was in the Forge's back office an hour later with the good light on and the kit open on the desk, doing the slow work on Knox's hands.

She flushed the splits again and taped the knuckle that had reopened in the garage and built a splint for the smallest finger on the left, the one he swore wasn't broken and that she was fairly sure was.

It gave her something to do that wasn't thinking about the red mark on her own arm or the sound that wrist had made or how close she'd come to the inside of a van.

Through the office's interior window she could see the bay, and in the bay she could see her father.

He was standing at the big monitor with Ez at his shoulder, watching something on a loop.

The Calhoun structure had cameras. There were cameras on everything the club touched now, the whole reason being to keep exactly this from happening, and the whole bitter joke of it was that the cameras had caught it instead of stopping it.

She knew what it was. There'd be a camera in that garage. There was a camera everywhere now.
