CHAPTER TEN #3
He looked at the small crooked perfect thing in his palm like it might come apart if he breathed on it wrong, and then he closed his enormous scarred fist around it slow, the whole of it vanishing inside his hand, and he looked at her.
There were no words in him at all, none, the man was wrung dry of them, and that was all right, because she hadn't asked for words.
She'd asked for exactly what he was doing, which was sitting there in her grandmother's creek-light with his throat working and his eyes too bright, holding the first gentle thing his hands had ever made as if it were the only currency he had and he was trying to figure out how a person went about deserving to keep it.
She had never in her life loved him more than she did in that silent minute, and she'd loved him through a great deal by then.
The little coil she lifted out of his hand and set easy on the sill in the creek-light, and she took the awl and the grass off the bed and set them on the floor, and she came back to him and settled herself over his lap and cupped his face in both her hands, the two of them close and warm in the low gold morning, and this time she was the one who went slow.
It was nothing like the first hungry night, or the night she'd taken him apart in his own kitchen to prove a point, or the fierce alive scramble in the dark after the guns.
It wasn't even like the night they'd first spent in this same small room, when they'd both still been half afraid of the size of what they were starting, when the war and her father and the whole undecided future had still been in the bed with them.
That night had been a first confession, and confessions are always a little afraid.
This was after all of that. This was the morning after he'd stood up in front of the whole world and chosen her out loud with his home in his hands.
There was nothing left to be afraid of, and nothing left to prove, and nowhere on God's earth either of them had to be.
The war had crested. Her father hadn't blessed it yet but couldn't unmake it either.
There was only this borrowed morning in the house that had always let her be her whole size, and a man who'd handed his home back for her the day before, and all the time on earth.
So she loved him the slowest she ever had.
Unhurried. Certain. Taking her time like a woman who'd finally stopped believing the thing might be snatched away before she got to finish it.
Her mouth soft on his, then not soft at all, then soft again, drawing it out.
Her hands moving over the whole scarred landscape of him she knew by heart now — the old ropes of muscle, the newer bruises fading yellow-green from the fight, the fresh split on one knuckle, every mark a place the world had tried to take him and failed.
His breath went ragged under her patience and she gentled him back down and made him wait, and there was a playfulness in it now that had never once been possible before, a slow warm teasing joy, because joy was finally allowed in the room with them, and they were both learning what to do with it.
"Look at me," she said, when she rose over him and took him into her and started them moving, and he looked, those pale wolf eyes gone dark and open and undefended, and she held the look and didn't let it go.
She set the rhythm slow and deep and would not be hurried out of it no matter how his hands gripped her hips to speed her, and he learned, again, to give it over to her, to let her keep the pace, to trust that slow could be its own kind of undoing.
Their voices dropped low, the two of them saying small true things into each other's mouths, nothing clever, nothing performed, just the plain warm shorthand of two people who'd decided.
His hands came up her back and into her hair and held her like she was the thing keeping him on the earth.
She rested her brow against his and breathed him in and rolled her hips slow and felt the pleasure build in her not in a rush but in a long rising tide, patient, certain, the whole of it wound tight around the fact that this was permanent now, that there was no more after that they'd spend apart, that she got to have this in the low gold light of her grandmother's house for the rest of a life she'd chosen with her own two hands.
She felt it building the whole slow time, not the sharp fast climb of the hungry nights but a long deep swell that gathered in her by inches, rolling up out of the place where certainty lived, wound tight around the plain enormous fact that this was hers now and permanent and safe and chosen.
He watched her the whole way up, those pale eyes open and undefended on her face, letting her see him seeing her, and that was the thing that finally tipped her over.
When it took her it took her slow and enormous and complete, a long shuddering unspooling with not one thread of fear anywhere in it, only the deep sure joy of a woman come home.
She pressed the cry into the muscle of his shoulder and rode the whole of it out, and felt him break loose right up under her a breath later, holding nothing back, his arms locking her in against him, his face driven into her neck.
And the two of them stayed folded together in the creek-light long after, breathing, unhurried, home, the little crooked coil of sweetgrass sitting on the sill catching the shifting water-light — the first thing those terrible beautiful hands had ever made and kept.

Bishop was on Mae's porch when they drove back out that evening, sitting in the good rocker like he'd grown there, and Knox understood as the truck came up the dirt road that the answer he'd been waiting three days for was about to be given, and that it was going to be given out here, on the blue-painted porch, and not across a table in front of the club.
The old man had his own truck parked in the yard and a pot in the kitchen — Knox could smell it through the screen door as they came up the steps, tomato and pepper and bacon gone deep, the exact smell of the rice Zola made, except she was standing right beside him and hadn't made it.
Bishop had. Bishop had driven out to his estranged mother-in-law's house, let himself into the kitchen he must have known better than any on earth once, a lifetime ago, and made a pot of red rice with his own hard hands.
And the sight of Zola's face when she caught the smell of it — how it stopped her cold on the top step, how her hand went to her mouth — told Knox there was a whole story in that pot he didn't have and wasn't owed, and understood, all the same, to be the realest thing the old man had ever said out loud.
"He learned it from my mother," Zola said, very quiet, only for Knox, her eyes wet. "In that kitchen. Twenty-five years ago. He hasn't made it since she left. I didn't — I didn't even know he still knew how."
And it came down on her all at once, there on the top step with the smell of the rice in her throat: the message.
For three days she'd carried her mother's words like a stone she couldn't swallow — quit ya sulkin' — and had never once gotten to say them.
She didn't need to now. Her father had quit his sulking on his own, in the one kitchen on earth that could have moved him to it, and made his whole answer in a dish an absent woman had taught him a lifetime ago.
Some messages, it turned out, delivered themselves. Zola let the stone go.
Bishop didn't get up. He rocked once, and looked out at the creek going bronze in the low sun, and let them come to him.
"Sit down," he said. There were two more rockers, because Mae's porch had always had more chairs than a widow living alone could need, as if she'd spent thirty years keeping seats ready for the family that took its time coming home.
They sat. Mae herself was somewhere inside, a shadow moving behind the screen, humming her endless tune low over her baskets, close enough to be there and far enough to let a man say his piece.
Once, when the quiet on the porch ran too long and heavy, her voice came drifting out through the mesh, dry as a cornhusk and aimed at no one and everyone: "Leh de chile eat befo' you start in on ya speeches, Elijah.
Food get cold while a man hunt roun' fa his feelin's.
" And Bishop, the president of the Iron Saints, the hardest man Knox had ever stood in a room with, ducked his head at his mother-in-law's screen door like a scolded boy and almost, almost smiled.
