Chapter 1
THE PACT OF ARGYLL
In the Year of Our Lord Sixteen Hundred and Eighty-Nine, let it be known throughout the Highlands and Isles that the undersigned clans do hereby enter into solemn concord, henceforth called The Pact of Argyll.
We, loyal subjects of King William and Queen Mary, unite our strength to uphold the Protestant Crown, preserve peace, and restore right governance in these unsettled times.
Under the guidance of Laird Angus Campbell of Argyll, this Pact is formed to quell Jacobite unrest, prevent rebellion, and secure firm royal authority where disorder threatens to rise.
The signatories—Campbells of Argyll, Grants of Strathspey, Rosses, Munros, and such other clans as shall hereafter join—pledge mutual aid in matters of defense, judgment, and the safeguarding of Highland lands.
Each clan shall offer men, counsel, and provision when called upon, and in return receive the protection and favor of the Crown through the influence and standing of the House of Argyll.
Let it be affirmed that any clan resisting lawful authority or cleaving to Jacobite allegiance shall be deemed a disturber of the realm.
Against such factions this alliance is empowered to act with unity and swiftness—curbing their influence, restoring obedience, and defending the stability of the Highlands.
Thus, bound by duty and necessity, we set our hands to this Pact, establishing a united front for the security of our people and the rightful governance of the realm.
