Wedding Blues #7
“You knew? You had me checked out.” The hurt was on her face probably because I didn’t come to her directly.
“I’ve had your whereabouts for weeks to ensure that you didn’t have entanglements that could complicate this situation. I never needed to look at it until recently.”
“To ensure you weren’t about to marry a killer.”
“You should know that wouldn’t have bothered me at all, Semira.”
She nodded but she still looked irritated.
“Even if you don’t have enough for an arrest warrant surely this is something that can give you more of a reason to look into him.
He has the type of pedigree that would fit someone thinking they were going to be in the Skull and Bones or Masons or whatever name slapped on this version of a billionaire death cult.
Alec maybe you should try to offer your dick as bait to see what you can find out. ”
“You’re serious?” Alec was looking at me like he couldn’t believe Asha was telling him to fuck for information.
She looked between the two of us clearly wondering what she’d said that was so wrong.
“Why wouldn’t I be? I wouldn’t have a problem doing it—“
“Please don’t finish that sentence. He is going to tear this room apart if you finish that sentence.” Vega was rubbing his head envisioning the damage I wanted to do at the mere thought of Asha using herself as bait.
“It’s not like I would ever go through with it.” She seemed offended at the thought but I didn’t give a damn.
“I can promise you that doesn’t make any difference to him.”
Neither of us spoke again because there was a knock on the door before Anderson strolled in. He made the wrong move and let his eyes linger on Asha too long like I hadn’t already tossed his ass around the fucking lobby for speaking to her.
“Can we help you?”
I had to ask what the fuck he wanted since he was standing there with his thumb up his ass like we were supposed to beg him for whatever information he brought his ass in here to deliver.
Remembering the last time we had issues Anderson averted his eyes from where they shouldn’t have been in the first place.
“DNA has come back.”
“DNA? From where?” Asha had that funny look on her face that was something between curiosity and dread.
He looked between me and Alec waiting for permission from us to speak.
My brows went up silently telling his ass to hurry with the information.
I knew she might be feeling some type of way when she heard where DNA was pulled from but she wouldn’t want to appear weak to anyone.
If she were going to have a negative reaction she’d do it once he was gone.
“Around the teeth marks and the skin near where her organ was removed.”
“And?” Him telling us they’d found DNA didn’t mean shit if there was no suspect to match it to. Would it come in handy later on? Potentially. But right now we couldn’t bring in the person who seemed good for the crime.
“And what? That was it.”
“So there’s no match in the system.” Alec was stating the obvious trying to spare Anderson’s feelings but it was futile.
“No.”
“Bet.” I sat forward with my back to him, getting ready to run a few ideas between my actual partners on the case. Apparently, Anderson didn’t take the hint to leave. I turned around slowly and saw him standing there expectantly. “What?”
“You aren’t going to say thank you? Offer to keep me in the loop—“
I snapped my head around ready to go off. “The fuck would we do that for?”
“There’s far too much we would have to catch you up on at this late date is what Agent Nakoa is saying.
I’m sure when the time is right you’ll be clued in.
” I knew she didn’t even like him but she had the type of manners that forced her to have decorum no matter who she was around.
Although I admired her for the skill I wanted her to quit that shit. Especially with this muthafucka.
Anderson was thinking too hard and I wanted to tell him to get the fuck out but he made the right decision and nodded before he left.
Vega’s held fell back and he exhaled with relief. “Swear I thought we would have to be mopping up blood if he didn’t carry his ass outta here.”
Asha didn’t bother to feign ignorance; she only shook her head and smiled happily that she’d kept me out of trouble.
“So now we know there’s DNA. I’m sure little can be done since we don’t have his DNA but isn’t there a way for you all to analyze it to get physical markers of the suspect?”
“How do you know about all that?”
“I’m a woman who studies the criminal mind for a living. You think I’m not cognizant of the latest developments in my field?” That regal brow rose indignantly at Vega for questioning her intelligence.
“That and like all women you watch a shit ton of crime shows.”
She smiled at me sweetly; I knew it wasn’t sincere. “If you messed up my algorithm I swear I will cut off your big toes.”
Vega burst out laughing, and Asha didn’t blink an eye after threatening me. My dick and I were just happy she was talking to us again so I wasn’t about to aggravate her.
“I didn’t, I promise.”
“I don’t know why but I believe you.” Asha seemed almost disappointed in herself for not still being irritated with me but she couldn’t lie that she was getting used to having me around.
“I’m not crazy enough to do anything to get on your bad side.” I was flirting. In the way only she and I seemed to respond well to. A common ground where we didn’t have to be vulnerable with one another.
“If you did you might as well kill me first.” Her comment carried an unspoken weight. A promise that she would do her worst if I let her down.
“So you’re saying that you want me to take you out of the land of the living before I could disappoint you?”
Vega was grinning like he was pleased I had my hands full.
She leaned forward and winked, making my heart race. “Absolutely. Because the way I would torture you once I found out that you’d let me down would be a fate worse than death when it was all said and done. So get to me before I get to you, Ori.”
“A promise?”
Asha’s face broke into that same brilliant smile. “Of course. And just like you, I don’t break mine.”
