Prologue
My Dearest Eloise,
I write this with deepest regret, but I fear I am no longer the man you once knew.
War has broken me. Its physical scars challenge me daily, while its ghosts torment the very foundations of my sanity.
I cannot with good conscience condemn you to a marriage with a man doomed.
You deserve better. You are the light to my darkness, and I ask that you remain as such.
I pray in time, you will see fit to forgive me.
Eternally yours,
Lucian
