Chapter 10

Ten

Hayden

Knocking, I wait for Olivia to open the door, and I look around.

I know this is where she lives, but I don’t have to like it.

There are some freaks who live here. The group of guys standing by the trailer a few trailers away from Olivia’s keep looking over at me.

They’re probably thinking the same things others are thinking, what the hell is a guy who’s driving a BMW doing in a place like this.

I’m not even sure my wheels will still be here when I leave.

“Hayden.” The look on her face is full of worry, before I can ask her what's wrong she walks away and I follow her inside. The trailer isn’t that big, so I stay by the door to give her some space, plus every time I’m here no one can really walk around me because I take up a lot of space.

“Mom, you’re scaring me.” Olivia shouts at the door, and I walk over to her.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” I ask her and stop her slamming her hand on the door. She starts biting her lower lip as she looks at the door.

“Mom went to have a shower, that was a while ago. Now she’s not answering me, she wasn’t feeling well this morning, and I’m a little worried.” She knocks on the door again. “Mom, just say something so I know you’re not dead.”

“I’m not dead,” her mom replies, but there's something in her tone which makes me worry about her, too. I’ve only met her a few times, but the tone in her voice is enough to know something is wrong.

“Then can you come out?” Olivia asks.

“I can’t, I fell.” Before her mom can finish what she was saying, Olivia starts running into the door trying to break it down, and I start laughing when she rubs her upper arm.

“Move out of the way, I don’t want my delicate flower to break.” I move her out the way, and with my back to the door, I kick it hard and it opens first time. Olivia runs in, and I keep my back to the bathroom, and wait for Olivia to help her mom.

“Hayden, can you help me please. I can’t pick her up. I’ve covered her.” I hear the choke in her voice. Turning around I go into the bathroom.

“Hey Mrs. B, you’ve got yourself in a pickle here.” She smiles at me, and tells me to shut up, I kneel and tell her to wrap her arm around my shoulder. “You know Mrs. B, if you wanted me to pick you up, all you had to do was ask.”

“Well, I had to make sure you’re as strong as you look.” I laugh picking her up from the shower and following Olivia out to the bedroom.

“I think I pass,” I joke, and Mrs. B starts laughing. “So, what happened? And you know me, I’m not going to stop asking until you tell me.” I lie her on the bed, and Olivia quickly puts the covers over her.

“I got lightheaded and fell.” Olivia gives her some water, and I watch her looking after her mom.

This girl goes to school, works some crazy hours, then comes home to look after her mom.

Her dad works mornings, comes home to look after Mrs. B, then works a night shift.

And there's me, who asks for anything from Dad and gets it.

I haven't seen a bad day in my life. It makes me respect this family a whole lot more.

“Right, you get your mom sorted, I’ll go grab us a pizza, popcorn, ice cream, and movie night.” I point to Olivia, but she shakes her head. “What?”

“We don’t have a TV, sorry.” Olivia doesn't even look at me.

“I have my laptop in the car, Netflix it is. What do you say Mrs. B, date night?” I ask her, and she looks at Olivia, then back to me.

“I would love a date with you.” I start laughing, as I walk to the door.

“Right, I’ll be back with treats, and pizza.” I wink at Mrs. B, then get to the car, and stop before I can get in when Olivia calls my name.

“You don’t have to do this—”

“I’m going to stop you right there. I want to do this, you’re my best friend, and I’m going to help you whenever I can.

Plus, your mom likes me, and because of me she’ll never like any of your future boyfriends.

I’m setting very high standards.” I stop when she starts laughing, pushing me a little.

“You deserve a break, you work hard, and I’m going to make sure I’m here to help you when I can.

So, get your mom ready for the best date of her life. ”

Olivia wraps her arms around my waist, and I hug her back. The crazy thing, this feels so natural with her. I could hold her every second of the day if I could, but I’m not fucking up this friendship, not when she needs me the most.

17 years old

“You think I’ll be single forever. I’m seventeen, and I haven’t had a boyfriend.” I turn to Olivia reading her book, as I finish off my school work. The corner of my lip curls, and l look back down at my work before Olivia sees the smile. “I mean there was this boy, but he stopped talking to me.”

“Because I told him to stay away, he was a creep. You can do so much better than him—”

“Hayden!” she snaps at me.

“Plus, your book boyfriends have made your standards very high. No guy is going to come close.” I lean forward and grab her book and start reading the page she’s on.

“Oh, it’s sex time.” Resting my back on the wall behind me, I start reading some of it out loud.

Olivia tries to get the book back. “I’m so wet for him, I want him, I need—”

“Hayden, stop reading it,” Olivia shouts, and throws her hand over my mouth as she climbs on top of me, trying to grab the book out of my hand.

Quickly placing my hand on her lower back, I turn her over, slamming her back on the tree house floor, and sitting on top of her. I trap her arms beneath my legs.

“By the looks of it, you like some fun things.” I turn the page, and fuck she likes to read some rough sex. I might need to start reading some of these to get an idea of what girls are liking.

“Hayden!” My mom yells up to the treehouse. “Olivia’s dad’s here.”

“Coming,” I shout back and look at Olivia with a smile. “If I don’t like the guys you're talking to, or don’t think they're good enough for you, I'll tell them to fuck off.” I get off her, because being in that position with her isn't helping me keep things in the friend zone.

“So, I’m going to be single forever,” Olivia snaps at me, putting things into her bag. “You know I have to listen to you tell me about how you’ve kissed this girl, or how this girl want—”

“Then I won’t say anything in front of you again.

” She rolls her eyes and turns away from me.

“Hey, I’m sorry. I just don’t want you to get hurt.

” Not answering me, she goes down the ladder, and I quickly lower myself on the rope.

I grab her arm to stop her walking away from me.

“I’m sorry, I’m only looking out for you. ”

“Yeah, whatever.” She shakes her head and walks into the house.

I smile at her parents. “Hi, Mrs. B. Which doctor did you get today, the good looking one?” I joke with her, making her laugh.

“The moody one, with the moody nurse,” she replies, which makes me laugh in return.

“Fun day for you then, now you have a moody daughter.” Olivia pushes me, which makes me smile at Mrs. B, before turning to face her. “Come on, I won’t do it again if it makes you feel better.” It’s a lie, I'll one hundred percent do it again, but I hate when she's in a mood with me.

“You’ll just get your brothers to step in.” Olivia points to Mason and Miles, who both agree without even knowing what’s happening.

“Now, you know what my brothers are like, I can't stop them. Come on Olivia, are you really going to go home mad at me?” I wrap my arm over her shoulder, grab the bag from the floor, and sling it over my shoulder, as we exit the house to the car. “You and I both know neither one of us will go to sleep until you’re happy again. So, you might as well save us both the trouble.”

Before getting in the car, she turns to face me. “You know you’re so lucky that you’re my best friend, and no matter what I can never be angry at you. But you can’t stop every guy who wants to talk to me.” I’m not sure if she’s being serious because she doesn’t sound like it.

“Now we both know I’m going to say something if some asshole I think is not going to treat you right. And before you get all moody again, I got you this.” I put the bag between us, and I have to smile when she presses her lips together to stop the smile.

Olivia takes the bag from me and pulls out the Lego daisies I got her. She kept moaning the daisies I was giving her kept dying, so there's no reason this one should die.

“Hayden, this is amazing.” She puts it back into the bag and takes out the unicorn cupcake. “You know people will start thinking you love me, with the flower and cupcake I get every time I come over,” she jokes, but if only she knew I’d do anything to make her smile.

“Well, someone has to love you, no other guy will put up with your crap.” I open the car for her, and she gives me a kiss on the cheek. “You shouldn’t change your perfume, you always smell like flowers.”

“Well, my best friend has good taste and got me the best Christmas gift.” She leans in and gives me another kiss on the cheek and gets into the car.

Note to myself, Dior J’adore, is the gift I’m giving her every year for Christmas, because it reminds me of her.

Present Day

Why the fuck is she here? I’ve hated her for three years and told myself she was nothing. She never meant anything to me, and I sure as hell meant nothing to her.

Now she’s back, and the only fucking thing I can think about it how my best friend broke me, and if she still likes cupcakes and daises. Two fucking things I shouldn’t be thinking. I should be thinking about the different ways I can make her life hell, make sure she hates every second of school.

Walking into class I sit toward the back, joining Sam and Hudson.

“Didn’t think you would come in today,” Hudson looks at me, and I wonder why he thinks that.

I’ve not missed one class, and not planning on fucking up the last five months I have left here.

“The girl you seem to hate is in this class.” Hudson points and I look over to the four rows on the other side and there she is.

Olivia sits by herself, tapping her fingers on the laptop, which looks as if it’s about to break, then she looks down at her phone.

As more of the class come in, I hear Jen and her group of friends, but they walk past me and toward Olivia. Maybe I don’t have to make her life hell, and Jen and her friends will do it for me.

Jen stands in front of Olivia, who finally looks up at her, and she starts talking, I can’t hear from where I’m sitting. Jen smiles, and looks over at me, and Olivia turns to face me, and the color in her face drains but she keeps her eyes locked on mine.

I remember looking into those eyes, planning to have her in my life until she got fed up with me. Now I look into those eyes, and the only thing I want is to make her cry, make every day miserable for her.

Jen laughs as she pushes Olivia's laptop off the desk and walks over to me kissing my cheek.

“What did you say to her?” I ask, looking at Olivia picking her laptop up.

“Nothing, I told her because she’s Abigail's friend, she can hang out with us, but that doesn't mean all of us like her. I was nice about it,” Jen jokes, then leans back in her seat, and continues talking with her friend, she laughs facing me again.

“Also told everyone not to sit by her, and if they did I'd make sure they all regretted it.”

Olivia looks around picking up on the fact no one is anywhere close to her, and I have to smile. Grabbing my things, I get up and Jen grabs my arm.

“Just going to talk to her.” I give her a wink, making her laugh. Walking over to the empty chair next to her, I sit down.

“You know we would've been great together.” I turn to face her before finishing my sentence. “But you ruined everything, you made me into the man I am today. Now it’s my turn to have fun with you.” Her body tenses up, but she doesn’t look at me.

I move the hair away from her shoulder and she goes to move away from me, but I grab the back of her neck to keep her where she is.

“You loaded the gun and shot me with it, now I’m going to bring a lethal hit to you,” I whisper in her ear.

My finger moves to the necklace; the necklace I got for her. Olivia quickly grabs the necklace and moves away. Why is she still wearing it? She has no fucking right to wear it. I’m so angry and pissed off that she’s wearing it as if she didn’t break us.

“I’m sorry,” the two words whisper from her lips, and I have to laugh. She has no fucking idea how little those two words mean to me. What did she think, I would see her and be happy?

“You will be.”
