ANNA
Four Years Later, December
I rock back and forth, careful not to wake her as I lean over the railing of her crib to lay her down.
Jenny pokes her head in, mouthing, It’s ready.
Once she’s flat on her back and I’ve made sure the swaddle is securely wrapped around her, I quietly walk out of my room.
“Here.” Jenny sets my steaming breakfast plate along with a mug in front of me. “It’s hot, just like you like it.”
I force a smile, fighting against the desire to cry. I thought being pregnant was hard, but despite how much I heard about what comes after you give birth, I still wasn’t prepared.
Clearing my throat, I raise my lips higher. “Thanks. I know I’ve said this a lot but thank—”
“Shut up.” She harshly glares. “I’ve told you to stop thanking me. I’m here for you always. You’re my best friend and that’s my niece. I’ll do anything for you both. Don’t forget that.”
Grinding my teeth, I blow out a weary breath, dropping my teary gaze down as I nod.
She grabs my hand and squeezes it. “It’s okay. Let it all out. I’m here for you.”
And I do. I break down for the millionth time since everything ended between Sylas and me.
