27. Walker
Chapter twenty-seven
Walker
My phone buzzes in my pocket as Tara and Kelly present their most recent potential leads to our team. The task force has been investigating connections to our victims that have any significant criminal history, or suspected criminal activity. Subtly checking my text messages, I school my face to fight my smile once I see the text is from Vivian.
Vivian
Hey, sorry for the delay. Last night was alright, she only had one nightmare but it was a pretty big one.
Me
Well damn, I’m sorry to hear that. Y’all must be so exhausted dealing with that every night. Is there anything I can do?
Vivian
No, but I appreciate the offer. I think if there was anything to do, I would do it. Something has to eventually give.
Me
It will. What are you up to today?
Vivian
I just had some alone time at the coffee shop. Now off to get Eloise from my daddy’s, run a few errands, but nothing too exciting. How’s your day going?
Me
Good, just a bunch of meetings but should be done around 4. Can I call you when I get done at the office?
Vivian
I would like that—and I hope that’s okay to say.
Oh, there’s a lot I want to say right now that would not be okay at this point in time. I can just imagine the shy smirk on her face as she sent me that text.
Me:
That’s more than okay with me, Viv.
Vivian
:) Ok good. I hope you have a good rest of your day and I’ll talk to you later.
Me
Looking forward to it.
Vivian
Me too.
I bet she’s smiling right now and damn, she has the best smile. It’s only been a couple of weeks since I met them at the park, but I’m going to need to find a reason to go to Forrest Falls this week. I’ve thought about the white V-neck T-shirt and snug jeans she wore to the park almost every day. Who am I kidding, I’ve definitely thought about those—and what it would feel like to properly investigate them with my hands on her body, taking my time slowly and methodically undressing her so I can explore what’s underneath those clothes. She’s probably beautiful again today, I don’t think it’s possible for her to look anything but.
Shit. This is not the time to think about these things.
Dentures.
Cats vomiting hairballs.
Listening to people chew loudly.
Damn it.
