Chapter 28

VIOLET

I peek out of the window, paying attention to what direction Lincoln drives in, and as soon as he’s out of sight, I push my feet into my sandals and jump into my car with Pom-pom.

He’s lying. He’s not meeting Rio today because Rio is currently at the gym doing all the last-minute prep for tomorrow’s opening.

I know a quicker way to his hotel and when I pull out of my drive, I head in the opposite direction he went in.

What is he hiding?

He must take me for a fool.

What was I thinking, telling him I love him? I’ve never said those words to any other man before, and then he didn’t say them back, and then he left.

I let out a frustrated huff through clenched teeth.

I’m embarrassed that I told him.

But the way he looked at me as we made love—because that’s what we did—it was the most incredible thing I have experienced. I thought he was going to say it too.

And then boom… Titanic meets iceberg-style catastrophe .

I pull up in the hotel parking lot and find the farthest spot away so he won’t see my car. From where I parked, I have the perfect view of the entrance.

No sooner have I arrived than Lincoln pulls in.

He bounces out of his car, looking giddy. And runs straight into the arms of a tall, blonde gazelle, er, I mean, woman holding a beautiful baby.

My pulse beats faster than a two-step beat and my hand finds my chest.

I can’t breathe as I watch Lincoln scoop the baby out of her arms, spinning her around before he kisses her chubby cheeks.

Two little boys appear by their side, almost tackling him to the ground as they throw their tiny arms around his legs and waist.

My blood boils hotter than the sun in my veins as a realization dawns on me and it all makes perfect sense.

I grab Pom-pom and fly out of my car, slamming the door behind me, and stomp over to Lincoln.

Let the battle commence.
