Chapter 14

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Shelby

Wincing, I walk to the front door. The incessant knocking is pissing me off more and more the closer I get.

“What?” I snap, ripping the door open.

A startled Dr. Moore stands on the other side.

“Good morning?” He raises a brow.

“Is it?”

Peering around me, he spies Sam still asleep on the living room sofa.

“Girls’ night was a success, I see.” He chuckles, and for the first time in four years, I want to slap his perfect face.

Breathing in deep, I tried to rein myself in and tamper down my mood. After all, it’s not Leonard’s fault.

It’s his fault. A man whose name I don’t even know.

For the third day in a row, I’ve woken up sore, sated, and wet. He hadn’t used a condom again.

I’d embarrassed myself by going into the local drug store for nothing. And, oh yeah, I could be pregnant with an unknown man’s baby.

If he visits tonight, I’m going to kill him.

But even as I think them, I know they’re empty words. Not just because my heart flutters every time I think of him or how my body heats at the thought of him taking me again but because of how I found the condoms.

Sliced clean through.

I may not remember what happened last night, but the message was clear.

No condoms.

The same answer as last time I tried to use protection. Only this time, I can’t get anything after either. Or maybe I can.

Forcing a smile on my lips, I try not to look psychotic.

“I’m sorry. Morning, Doc.”

Leonard’s smile falters. “Are you not feeling well this morning?”

“I’m fine. Just tired,” I lie.

“Shelby,” he warns in that tone of his. The one that says he knows that I’m lying.

I peek back at Sam, who is still fast asleep. Stepping forward, I force Leo to take a step back and join him outside.

“What’s up?”

Letting out a heavy sigh, Leo answers without any further questioning. “I need a favor.”

“Sure.” I shrug.

The smile he gives me cools my heated anger.

“I don’t want to leave Riley with Sarah again, but I don’t have a sitter. Are you able to pick her up from school and watch her until I get off work?”

“Yes,” I answer quickly. No way I’m letting Sarah watch her again. “I’m working the coffee shop ten until three.”

“Perfect. Her class lets out at two forty-five, but Miss Lucy usually has no issue keeping the kids longer if needed. Thank you. I’ll be home at seven.”

He starts to walk away, but I rush, “Wait!” and step toward him.

“If I do you a favor, will you do me one?”

Doc walks back over. “What do you need?”

“Another appointment? I need Plan B,” I practically plead.

Leonard’s face hardens. “No.”

Turning, he starts to walk away.

“Hey, hey.” I follow quickly. “Why not?”

He halts and straightens his back before he turns. “We discussed this at your last appointment.”

“I’m doing you a favor,” I remind him.

“This isn’t about favors, Shelby. This is a moral issue for me. The decision to have a baby is a two-person discussion. The fact that you’re even asking tells me condoms are still off the table. If he didn’t want to prevent it when you had sex, then I won’t prevent it now.”

“It’s my body!” I snap.

“And it would be his child. If he said no, it’s no.”

I blink back tears. I shouldn’t be frustrated since I knew what his answer would be.

At least he’s a man of his word. I’m not the only one he’s given this speech to. Everyone in town knows how he feels.

“I’ll find someone else to watch Riley.”

Reaching out, I grab his arm. “No. You don’t have to do that. I may think that you’re a dick right now, but I love her, and she’ll be safe with me.”

“A dick?” His words are low and growled.

The sound sends a shiver through me that starts at my head and ends in my crotch. My eyes widen when he steps closer.

“A dick,” he repeats, a disbelieving chuckle shakes his chest.

My eyes drop from his grin when he backs away. My eyes widen to the point of pain when I notice the bulge at the front of his pants.

Holy shit!

I did that!

Reaching out, Doc takes my chin between his thumb and forefinger. “I’ll be back at seven. Riley will have a spare key in her bag.”

At a loss for words, I just nod.

What the fuck just happened?
